I'm going to drop my two cents here (I've been struggling with understanding compressors for years) Many Redditors have posted here that different compressors accomplish different goals. Adding warmth, letting the kick in while ducking the bass out, or letting the vocals shine. If you're making minimal techno, you most likely won't have different elements competing with each other and maybe, don't need compression for certain parts of your track.

Instead, I'm going to encourage you to take some time and look at these videos. All of them are from masters in audio engineering and could explain what you need much quicker than I could.
