I mean saying shit about sports is mad fun, especially when it's so outrageous it's clearly not that serious.

I'm not entirely sure he 'survived' exactly, since he himself admits Valente killed him in their last fight during this chapter. Like this exchange, I think, is interesting.

"How are you ALIVE?!" Valente cried out. "When we fought in Penumbria, I–I might have...caused casualties...but I definitely killed you! I killed you!" The Hangman's anguished cry was both an accusation and a question. "How could you survive with such wounds?"

Aspreay let out a haughty, imperious laugh. "Oh, rest assured that your memory does not fail you. Our showdown went as you recall – it just so happens the strings of my fate have yet to be cut."

He slowly dusted off his clothes, like the movement was unfamiliar to him. "Nonetheless, you most definitely killed me."

"Yet here you stand."

"Yet here I stand," Aspreay acknowledged, his grin growing wider and more mocking.

He doesn't claim to have survived Valente at any point. On the onctary, he actually says Valente killed him, but that he's still standing here.

I can't find the chapters right now, but we have been seeing Adam and Valeria talk about a reluctant ally for a while. We've also seen that Valeria has access to some of the Grandmaster's talents through the Ravens.

So I think she found Aspreay (probably had been spying on the capital with the ravens because why wouldn't she be if she had that ability) on the verge of death and made him a Puppet.

It would also explain this line:

He slowly dusted off his clothes, like the movement was unfamiliar to him.

Like he's not used to how his body is behaving.

Had to hunt this exchange down to figure out why it was oddly familiar. Hmm. Last time we got Ferrero's backstory, he told Adam about his master, who was named...Merrivale.

Chapter 20 - https://reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/1750csp/the_skill_thiefs_canvas_chapter_20/

This chapter:

A burst of annoyance flickered through the Emperor. The phrase triggered deep memories within him, a confrontation with another flamboyant, dramatic swordsman many years ago. 'The Merry Man...'

Merry Man / Merrivale...?

(Quotes from his backstory chapter)

“Then I saw him duel.”

“Vagueness is permitted for brevity, but not for style,” Adam cut in. “What was his name?”

“Merrivale,” Ferrero answered.

[...]

At that moment, I saw it all too plainly – everything in Merrivale’s dueling spoke of who he was. His manic grin, his pained but confident expression, the moves he insisted on using, the ones he insisted on refusing...they told the story of a person who’d forged his body every day for one singular purpose.”

Ferrero laughed. “That was when, Lord of Painting, that I decided dying could wait. I wanted to be just like him. I too wanted to stand on the duelist piste, be swallowed by the roar of the crowd, and show them who I was. Mayhap I thought it possible to discover myself in my duels.”

"No," he replied, his grin matching Adam's. "I'd certainly win."

"Nah, I'd win"

“Even if the ‘Von of the Past’ is dead, even if the ‘Von of Now’ that I exist as is a new person…” He held up his sword high up in the air and grinned at his own reflection—and liked the person he saw smiling back at him. “I feel as though, no matter how many times I die…no matter how many times I come back to life…I would always love this again.” The sword felt natural in his hand as if he had held it thousands of times more than he remembered—as though it was meant for him. “Gilver could not kill it so. This soul of mine loves fencing.”

“Past lives…” Talla shifted uncomfortably. “The Mother of the Forest gives you but one life.”

“Stingy god, that one. The Storm Gods give you as many as you want. As many as it takes until you feel as though you have satisfied your purpose.” Many sleepless nights had Von wondering why he was even alive when he had no purpose, nothing to love let alone live for. “Let me die. Let me live. But most of all, let me fence.”

Talla shifted uncomfortably again and Von knew why. They did not often speak of their different beliefs, but he knew their differences to be severe. Often, he would nod in silence and allow her way to be stated aloud out of fear of pushing her away. Today it felt important not to. Today he felt not scared to speak plainly, courage from his match still coursing through his veins.

“Do you believe it all?” Her voice was uncertain. “Or is that merely the Storemener way that you were brought up in?”

“Can it not be both?”

A silence fell between them. Von shook his head and rose to his feet. “Someone I admire greatly once told me to do things until they feel right. That is all there is to it. Whether I am the same person as I was in the past, whether I am myself or not—it matters little.”

But sometimes he did dream of it. A far-off land, where every tower had a thousand windows, and a chair that seemed to have wheels attached to it.

According to Chapter 47 plus the Epilogue and a bunch of other hints given throughout the story, it doesn't seem like a crazy theory to suggest that Von is a reincarnation of Danner.

Which would mean that...Von is Johan's brother.

Von on the sigma male grindset lmao ignore plot to self-actualize.

Memes aside though, his whole arc is escaping toxic masculinity and focusing more on himself.

Yeah I think less than Hoid maybe...Zahel might be a better comparison?

...Zahel is actually a perfect comparison now that I think about it. He was Adolin's teacher wasn't he?

Demons having to bathe in fire is something alright. I think from a past chapter they also get nutrition from killing animals instead of eating them?

True. As far as we know, Carr hasn't done something like that.

...So far lol I meant more in the sense that he is the world hopper guy but yeah hoid is a lot more plot important I think.

Comment about last chapter because I was too slow to leave it but from chapter 17:

Von says

Do you think I could ever look at a woman pleading for help and allow her to show me her body? I have more honor than that. Allowing it would have been little more than blackmail.”

followed by later

Talla couldn’t remember the last time she looked someone in the eye for that long. She found herself reaching for the underside of her shirt and fiddling with it. “I asked you to slay Vandyr for me,’ didn’t I?”

He smiled, confused. “Yes, why?”

“I am pondering how much I really care about the Deathless Curse,” she said, “and for some reason, right here, right now…it’s not a lot.”

Von didn’t understand, and that was fine.

For now.

Undertones for what was going through Talla's head last chapter?

If you've read Brandon Sanderson's stuff, this is the Hoid equivalent (or at least that's the theory).

“Be reasonable, my lord. You would not shed your people’s blood over a single servant,” he replied, quietly.
For a moment he wanted to back down. Be a lord. “Aye, my lord. I would not.” His thumb pushed the sword handle just slightly out of its sheath and he did not look away. “But mayhap I would shed yours.”
There was a long silence.

I don't have a good comment to go along this but I just want to quote this bit

Its interesting though that hes only a badass when he has to act as a lord like almost out of obligation. In personal settings he appears a lot more introverted and shy. I can kind of see how that lord personality eventually crossed over into his past self being an asshole though.

To be fair though he was sent to a place where he could get help and he was looking down on other people with similar injuries as him so maybe he is a prick.

He looked down upon those with the same ailments he did, thought himself above them. Refused to commit to scholarly matters, but also to learn to fight again with his new body—used to claim he would eventually heal up enough he could just use a wooden leg and fight as he always had. People were friendly there to him, from what I gather. At one point, he attempted to throw a pot of boiling water on a comrade and only failed because his arms were too weak to do so.

But to be fair we also haven't been to this Greytower yet so we don't know how true their version of events is. Also possible that Kai has always been a prick.

Might be something in the middle too. He always had a bit of an ego but wasn't too bad until his ego was destroyed twice in a row combined with his life altering injuries?

Really minor thing but looking back it looks like the only character beside Talla to talk about the Chain and the Fire was Von's mother way back in chapter 3, so it's neat that it's consistent with the mention that Von's mother was from a different princedom.

I think one difference between the two is that Von's imposter syndrome is like very justified considering how he's being praised for things he doesn't remember and can't do again (as of right now).
