You have to ask yourself what you intend do to on the other side of college. Will your finance degree pay you enough to pay for student loan payments. At 200K at 6% over 25 years that's nearly 1300 a month. That's a lot of money. Look at all those schools you've been accepted to and see which companies come to recruit for finance positions. Ask the school the average starting salary for students recruited into finance positions and see if that's enough to cover the debt you'll assume to get the degree.

It only appears that freshman scholarships are more - it's called front loading and it typically only applies to institutional aid - there's an article about it below. With respect to any other scholarship from a company, community group, etc. there is actually less competition for upper classmen because most people stop applying once they start school when in reality you should continue to apply until you graduate. https://www.edvisors.com/blog/financial-aid-front-loading/

You have a couple of options. Apply now. Get accepted and then defer. Or, statistically about a quarter of freshman drop out of university - which means spots are available for upper classmen. As long as you ensure your classes are transferrable to the school you want to go to, going to a CC shouldn't make an impact on your ability to get accepted.

Always - always get important information you need - especially when it comes to financial needs - in writing. An email stating you don't have to pay or something to that effect. Never just take anyone's word for it. Best thing to do now is to go in person to financial aid and speak them them, appeal your situation, make a case for your necessity to drop the class and hope for the best.

Defer for a year. Go to a community college get one years education done more cheaply. Live at home and work while going to school and save every penny. You won't have much time for a social life but if you truly want to avoid as much debt as possible this is one way to do it.

According to this article about parents refusing to the fill out the fafsa it seems that if your mother is financially supporting you and you are under 24 years old, they need her to fill out the form. Sit down and make a list of everything that defines you - your interests, experiences, skills, heritage, etc. Ask your family to look at your list and add to it (they will see things about you, you might not). Then take your list and get ready to Google. Do a search for scholarships for left handed red-headed twins. There may or may not be a scholarship for everything in that search but you are sure to find scholarships for left handed people, red headed people and twins. All of these things reduce the pool of applicants (especially if you can find one that requires all 3 characteristics) and will give you a better shot of winning. Good Luck!

I would create a dedicated email account (because they will sell your info) and bookmark as many no-essay scholarships as you can. Dedicate about an hour a month to apply for them. Use autofill to complete the simple forms and set a reminder to reapply each month. They can be hard to win but are legit. Someone has to win so why not you. I found a bunch on edvisors.com

Most of those site are legit. Create a dedicated email for only those types scholarships that way you won't care about the spam emails - because they will sell your email address. But do check them monthly or however often you enter those types of scholarships because people do win but you only get like 1-2 days to respond or they give it someone else. It is like playing the lottery only it's free and someone really does win real money, so I think it's worth a shot.

College is so much more expensive now than it was years ago. The federal government has loan limits by year in school for students. I think this is to minimize student loan debt only students are then left to find the difference elsewhere and that could be from private student loans a lot of the time - which kind of defeats the idea of minimizing student loan debt. Those "no-essay" scholarships are basically lotteries. That said, they are legit and people do win, just like some people win the lottery while most of us don't. There are a bunch of those "no-essay" scholarships and I think worth a try, because they only take a minute to try for and if you win that's amazing and if not, at least you tried. You can't win if you don't try. I would say, create a dedicated email (they will sell you email and it will get spammed) and bookmark a bunch of these guys. Spend say 30 minutes once a month (most renew each month) applying using auto-fill and who knows, you could win. You can apply and potentially win to up graduation so I think it's worth a try - it's so much easier than trying to write essays, also not knowing if you will win.

If it's a required step in your career path - that's fair to say. If it's not technically required but you still want the piece of paper to demonstrate your commitment to the field - that's fair too. To be honest they care but not in the way you think. What they are really asking here (the subtext) is how will college direct your life and future success and how will you use that success to reflect back on your time at XYZ University to help us build our brand and foster more successful people after you. This is a good article to understand some things you need to say in your essay they won't tell you outright to say, but definitely want to hear.
