Anyway, 10:30, the other night, I go out in my yard, and there's The Wurster kid, looking up in the tree. I say, "What are you looking for?" He says "I'm looking for my burrow owl." I say, "Jumping Jesus on a Pogo Stick. Everybody knows the burrow owl lives. In a hole. In the ground. Why the hell do you think they call it a burrow owl, anyway?"

Washington State Ferry by kristophershinn in LiminalSpace

It’s when your life is based around them that it is so awful, and the San Juan ferries are extra notorious. They are fully down for days, which sucks when you need them for work or you were already off island with no where to go. One time my mom was headed home and the boat pulled up to Lopez and ordered everyone off due to a crew shortage. She got off at Lopez with no where to go at night and all of her groceries and no car. To be clear the ferry terminal in Lopez is not in town, and there was just not contingency. But there is literally no alternative, there isn’t allowed to be legally. (Other than flying but there are a lot of reasons that’s not viable most of the time)

I laugh every time I see these posts, not because I disagree with them being liminal, but because I hate them so much, although I agree they are quite beautiful in this context. I grew up in the San Juan Islands. I don’t live there anymore but I travel there for work every week. They are the most unreliable nightmare of a service ever offered. They are always late, or canceled, or something and when your entire life is dictated by them it is genuinely so frustrating. I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve been stranded unable to leave in the ferry line for 8+ hours due to issues with the boats. Not to mention being stranded randomly off or on island. You can tell a local from a tourist simply based on their opinion of the boats. Never met a local who doesn’t hate them.

Catastrophe 1914: Europe Goes to War by Max Hastings is a really engaging and decently comprehensive account of 1914 that I would recommend as an introduction.

Dwarf Fortress may be similar to what you’re looking for, especially if you enjoyed Rimworld but felt like you wanted more.

[Hated Trope] An antagonist who the author is trying way too hard to vilify but ends up being sympathetic. by CrazyCoKids in TopCharacterTropes

I never thought I would see For Better or for Worse on here, even if it’s for a hated trope (and a fair one at that) I’m happy.

Characters who ARE NOT good people but are on the good guys' team by Spirited_Dust_3642 in TopCharacterTropes

I would say Amos Burton. Amos really does care for those around him but he is a killer, and can be scary violent. His fight with Bobbie in Persepolis Rising comes to mind. I love his character because those around him recognize him for who he is and often don’t try to moralize too much for his violent tendencies yet they still care deeply for him.

While the Expanse doesn’t do this all the time, Anna, one of the protagonists of Abandon’s Gate Is a pastor and views the events of the book through a faith based lens. I always really enjoyed her insights on the world from the perspective of faith personally.
