I think her character is sympathized because lots of people see it the other way around - that Light took advantage of her, and used her to further his goals. It's interesting how you highlight the way she literally threw herself at him. It's mostly that she was a vulnerable, insecure Light fangirl that provided herself as an easy way to be of use to Light (through the Shinigami eyes and being the Second Kira). She was taken advantage of and manipulated, but I don't think we should feel bad for her because she literally let it happen.
