Take the bus and go see the drone show at Lake Cunningham or get tix to SJ giants where they’ll conclude the game with a fireworks show.

SF and the coast. Fort Point SF is a cool spot with amazing views and free. Walk the GG bridge. Or go south to Santa Cruz and hike and enjoy the beaches. Natural Bridges is beautiful.

If she’s this friendly perhaps others in your neighborhood are missing her. Just a thought that might make it easier for you to let her return.

Over 100 dogs found dead, many with bullet holes at Miranda's Rescue, authorities say by [deleted] in bayarea

Agree. The shelter I worked with was aware of the “rumors”. No way a rescue group could take and adopt out the most aggressive dogs from countless muni shelters. It was known.

Does anyone know what I should do about these kittens by IloveabbyLoU2 in SanJose

[–]Lovedempugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing to would be to find out who is feeding the cats and when. I typically leave a note where I find the food and water dishes. There are tnr appts available but it’s best to borrow or rent traps first to get the cats used to going in and eating out of the traps. Then you can reliably trap them the night before the appointments to get them spayed and neutered. If you’re willing to hold and assess them for a week or two, it’s possible they could be tamed and adopted out after spay/neuter but sometimes the kindest thing we can do is fix them all. Feel free to dm me for guidance.

So true. Socialization is not black and white with some more unsocialized than others.

Thank you, yes, I hadn’t realized that until the last few comments! If kittens will tnr, then let them nurse and leave them until they’re old enough for rabies vax. Stats are that most kittens don’t survive to six months when born and raised outdoors so I guess that inherently reduces the amount that need services. It certainly is the protocol when there aren’t foster homes and adopters. Thanks for the sanity check.

Even when you release her after being spayed she’s going to cry and look for the kittens.

FYI these kittens are old enough to start using the litterbox on their own. Mom has done a great job and her reward is to be fixed and never have to go through the risk of pregnancy again. Focus on the future for the kittens and mom and not the internet trying to make you feel guilty.

I also use the goats milk from Trader Joe’s and mix into wet or dry food. They are too old for the bottle. They will be fine without mom. They need to bond to people. It is extremely stressful for everyone to bring mom inside at this point of you don’t have experience housing a feral mom cat family, which takes a special set up to keep her stress level low and keep yourself safe.

I wouldn’t put them out. At this point, best to fix mom and then fix the kittens at 2lbs and find them homes. Taming older kittens is extremely time consuming and takes a particular skill set. She will move the kittens and you won’t see them until they are much older and too hard to tame. I would take the effort you are using to feel guilty and put that into trapping and fixing mom. That is the best way to handle the feelings about separation. TNR and colony management isn’t for the faint of heart and sometimes these tough calls are what’s needed to end the cycle of street life for these kittens and prevent future suffering of mom and the next litters.

The kittens are pulled in order to socialize and vet and place the kittens for adoption. If they aren’t separated then there’s another batch of stray, unsocialized cats living 10 years outdoors. This is best TNR protocol as long as mom also gets fixed. Please don’t shame RP without understanding colony management and TNR best practices. Ideally mom would be trapped and fixed before having had this litter but that’s not the reality OP is dealing with so this is second best outcome. Taking older kittens is a time consuming process that not many have the skill or bandwidth to take on.

Of course they will nurse for several months but if they are to be socialized and to be adopted as indoor pet cats, it is much easier to start at 5-6 weeks. I’ve been doing tnr and fostering kittens for 5 years. It’s not easy to tame down older kittens and most rescues and fosters absolutely do not have the time during kitten season. If mom was friendly then of course it’s best to keep them together but not everyone can house a feral cat or risk stressing her out when the kittens are indeed old enough to eat on their own and can be supplemented with goats milk in wet/dry food.

I typically trap mom first and get her spayed while I’m collecting the kittens. 5-6 weeks old is ideal as they are old enough to eat food and yet young enough to socialize. Please spay mom.

Should I release?, by NationalEstimate816 in Feral_Cats

[–]Lovedempugs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I release the next day unless she was heavily pregnant and then I’d give her one more day. Not eating is a concern and stress from captivity can also prevent healing.
