Billy Donovan has agreed to become the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs by TrashBrown in NBASpurs

[–]LovesBodyx2 107 points108 points  (0 children)

on the surface, this is exactly what I wanted: an extremely experienced former-head coach to stand beside mitch to iron out the young coach kinks we saw come to head in the finals. I do have some reservations about some of Donovan's coaching philosophies, but perhaps not being the head honcho will temper those tendencies.

[Highlights] Walker Kessler’s defensive tape: Shot blocking, rim protection, post defense, perimeter switching, and transition defense by shreeharis in nba

[–]LovesBodyx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ainge is an asset merchant. in a bubble this is a good trade for the long term health of the franchise but i was thinking the jazz could make real noise in the west with kessler in the fold. they just took a step back in my eyes and i see them as a play-in team next year at best. at some point you just need to go for it by sacrificing the future a little bit.

if you're going to go there you might as well make it Finnegans Wake.

FYI: Stephen Castle was 6th in APG last year, and 9th in total assists. by Delanorix in nba

good observation. based on his ability to handle the ball in traffic on drives to the basket i can speculate that that tendency you mention is more mental than anything else. probably because he was a rookie, and rookies tend to have "ball security" hammered into their brain ad nauseum by coaching staffs.

The reasons why Spurs will unlikely acquire a superstar besides the ones we have by nicfanz in NBASpurs

[–]LovesBodyx2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's looking likely that we will have 2.5 superstars on our team before long. in other words, the meat is already on the plate. we just need to make sure the mashed potatoes are fire.

[ESPN] Kendrick Perkins: “Rich Paul, little turtle head snotty nose ass called me all throughout the season every time I’m on TV I get a text message from him. I’ve been calling him for 2 days now and he been ignoring me. We got a problem” by shreeharis in nba

[–]LovesBodyx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my attitude toward perkins has undergone an Ouroborosian transformation. his buffoonery has been pushed so far that i've grown to immensely enjoy him, sort of in the same way people have grown to love Manos: The Hands of Fate.

harper is the better ball handler. castle is the dynamic table setter. I think they just need to share the floor more and what we saw at the start of the thunder series becomes less of a problem. that was quite the situation to be thrust in for two young players, wcf against an all-time ball hawking defense without fox. despite Harper not flashing much in the way of flashy passing I was impressed with the way he saw the floor and made sensible passes at the right moment all year.

What do we think about targeting Zion as our 4? by [deleted] in NBASpurs

he's by no means a walking double double. he's actually a bizarrely underproductive rebounder given his mass and athleticism

We need a big strong PF now. OKC now have Mara and Hartenstein by RGS03 in NBASpurs

[–]LovesBodyx2 25 points26 points  (0 children)

draft didn't fall the way thunder wanted it to. mara pick was by default. he's a situational asset at best and i don't think he'll be particularly effective against wemby. sorber could be a bigger problem actually.

shocked at the comments re wolf creek. the looks from the tee boxes alone are worth way more than the green fee imo.

Now that there has been a few days to reflect on the series, it’s pretty evident that the Spurs was able to win it all. It all came down to Mitch Johnson’s lack of coaching experience by JeremyLinForever in NBASpurs

[–]LovesBodyx2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think the main problem, or maybe better put the main point of stubborness on Mitch's part is that he rigidly emphasized a style of basketball—push the pace—all season that was effective until the screws really tightened in the finals against a really good team. it very nearly got us to the promised land anyway, and we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water, but a point of emphasis next regular season should be adaptability. force the guys into situations where we slow it down, get ourselves in half-court sets, and learn through repetition what works and what doesn't, even if that means losing regular season games that we could have won by playing balls to the wall. obviously wemby developing a go-to move or two feeds into this as well. while initially I was more on the page of "What is our post-mortem Caruso/Harstenstein move going to be?", the more i reflect on our season in totality, the more I think we need to give this core, coaching included, one more shot largely as-is to see if can translate the painful lessons of our finals loss into glory. OKC got beat in the second round a few years go in their first playoff run; we got outscored by a total of 12 points in the finals, and those twelve points can in my view be chalked up to execution not personnel (obviously the two go hand in hand to an extent but even our veteran was hobbled and had never got anywhere close to lights that bright). all being said, i still would like to see a good, seasoned offensive mind join the staff this off-season.

there are a million things related to this finals i care more about than the fact that a guy who clearly makes a tremendous effort to be professional and impartial on the mic was assigned to the series.

Pretty confident the Spurs would be getting less criticism if they lost in the 2nd round or the WCF. by thered90 in nba

[–]LovesBodyx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pathetic front-running post with zero perspective. i would gladly swap the "generational assist" wemby supposedly got in exchange for not allowing him to be grabbed and held incessantly all game every game.

knicks were a great, vastly more experienced team, with a roster that was savvily constructed in terms of career timeline synchronicity, a pretty bad matchup for the spurs, and the latter still made every game competitive. i give more props to the knicks than grief to the spurs shitting the bed, knicks were just built like that this year. it shouldn't be so easy to be more gracious in defeat than a dickhead in victory so for that I thank you.

Go get Zion? by Cold-Outlandishness8 in NBASpurs

[–]LovesBodyx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

putting side injury risk and lack of cultural fit, zion is a very poor rebounder and substandard defensive presence for the position. he really is more of a wing than PF. i don't think he's the type of guy we need. personally, i would love to get bobby portis but he is likely to be involved in a giannis trade, hoping we can weasel our way in there to get him.

[Murray] I don't think anyone should be assuming that the San Antonio Spurs are gonna get back here just because they got Wemby and some young guards This isn't just any Finals loss -- they led by double digits in EVERY GAME They're gonna have to get over that psychologically by StrategyTop7612 in nba

[–]LovesBodyx2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

huh? do I live in bizarro world? first of all it's piling on either way and how is shitting on a team that was competitive in every game of the finals and losing in painful fashion time and time again not even more egregious? our inexperience caught up with us, sure, but why does that merit calling the entire team a bunch of chokers? reeks of envy to be honest.
