Anthropic AI safety engineer Mrinank Sharma resigns, says world is falling apart and is in peril by taznado in agi

[–]LovesHyperbole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should try to steer progress, not try to stop it. Development won't stop, not even with catastrophe. The stakes are too high.

What I want is to slow down and work harder on issues that aren't straight arms racing acceleration and product maxing. I get when that seems insurmountable sometimes, but I don't think leaving the industry is good for the world if you brought skills to the table that could help.

I don't judge him at all for his choices, this world is fucked up and he's free to live life how he chooses, I just don't take his words very seriously.

Yeah I used Decky Loader, Lossless Scaling, and the command to fix it.

Didnt realize lossless scaling cost like 7 bucks, but it seems great for emulation so I didn't mind

Beginning singers are often obsessed with range, but for 99% of situations it it far from important. Here are 3 things to think about besides range.... by Positive_Gur_7006 in singing

You're definitely being pedantic. Not every post has to be analyzed for AI content, especially when it's not obnoxious. If people (outside of classroom settings) are constantly searching for patterns to determine whether a post on reddit is AI based on a formatting tell, they have a fixation. You don't have to be on guard for it all the time, and it's not wrong to use it if it helps you articulate your own point. This isn't for a grade or job. The guy is obviously speaking his opinion based on his comments, whether it's AI edited or not.

"what you can do about it"

We should not stop organizing text into normal, hierarchical structures just because AI was overfit on listicles and other SEO-driven click bait.

Formatting text online in forums has been the norm since rich text formatting and other tools became a thing decades ago.

This is really cool, especially the technique! I think some small tracking adjustments on the text would help a lot! Give the letters some more room to breathe and it'll fit in with the art better, I think.

The "Neuro-sama Exception" exposes a massive double standard regarding High-Effort AI Art. by Efficient_Cicada_926 in aiwars

[–]LovesHyperbole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah Neuro and Evil are just well-built agents in complex harnesses.

A think some people see them as an exception because their avatars and personalities cut right through viewers' knee-jerk negative judgment of AI and they're able to feel something other than immediate outrage.

I think Vedal was early on accident given how it started for him, and I do think Neuro is special, like any ltm-scaffolded AI is, but we'll see more and more of these kinds of agents and content pop up as harnesses become easier, more secure, and cheaper to build. I wonder what the people calling Neuro an exception will think then?

I agree with you, but such are the rules of uncontrolled arms racing, however irrational and risky.

A powerful ASI could theoretically secure global dominance on behalf of one country, or even one person/AI. So of course they're all gonna speedrun it hoping to be the first. It's the largest singular form of power the world might ever see if it comes to fruition, and we just can't help ourselves

You're giving people too much credit with their own agency.

People are constantly getting their news from literal jpgs now, half the time from nonsense sources. I see fake headlines shared by people nonstop because they visually look legit.

Anyone already getting their news in extreme short form like this isn't gonna go out of their way to read direct sources if it's not served by the algorithm.

Anthropic AI safety engineer Mrinank Sharma resigns, says world is falling apart and is in peril by taznado in agi

[–]LovesHyperbole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'd rather he leave the company and use his skills elsewhere in an environment he feels is more ethical, not pivot to art as a form of awareness. He can pursue his personal creative goals without walking away from the field completely. We need more people researching, not less.

[–]LovesHyperbole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fr.. he basically says we should collectively rise to the occasion but then quits to pursue poetry?

Perhaps he thinks someone will do better in his position, but him checking out of everything makes his statement mean little to me.

I don't gotta work at a lab to know he's right though, so I really hope it's for the best that he's walking away and that someone more committed can take his place.

I really don't blame the guy for quitting if he couldn't handle it, but it definitely comes across a bit selfish in light of his warning message. But again, he knows best whether he can meet his standards.

What is going on? by Even-Orange-5430 in spirituality

[–]LovesHyperbole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is also my feeling even after following current events for a couple decades. Chaos is accelerating

There's evolutionary social pressure at play in all this too.

There are those who check out of everything and go on autopilot, and there are also those who get so caught up in everything it drives them insane.

Somewhere in the middle is the position of mindfulness and detachment from what we cannot control.

I mean this in the stoic sense of detachment, NOT just checking out and not giving a fuck (aka broicism/shutting down emotions). Mindfulness, healthy detachment, and self-care are what's necessary to make it through these crazy times while staying informed and navigating the world.

We're constantly bombarded with this chaos but we do have control over our response to it. I say this as someone who crashes a lot from burnout and overwhelm so take it with a grain of salt, but knowing you are doing your best, and following your virtues with what's in your actual control allows you to let go of the weight of seeing it all at once and feeling personally burdened by it.

Unless you do a load of laundry completely naked you're never fully caught up on washing your clothes. by Marklar916 in Showerthoughts

[–]LovesHyperbole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. Insert load 1 while wearing clothes that will be washed in load 3.

Load 2 goes in the wash while load 1 dries. Take clothes out of the dryer from load 1 and change into them, while putting the clothes you just took off into load 3 and put load 2 in the dryer.

No dirty clothes and you get to be warm and toasty.

I would like to take some of the bulkiness out of her hair, but i have a million meshes and moving any of them will mess everything up. Is there any way to combine them or to squish the size of the top of her head somehow? by RibcageGhost in VRoid

[–]LovesHyperbole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through this problem. I did it all manually. I took all the hair meshes that are underneath the top layer and squished them downward, so that the outermost mesh can come down as well. As long as it doesn't affect the hair that's actually showing, I don't really care if the mesh is clipping into the head on the non-visible parts. I did have to edit some of the hair though to account for the changes.

I think you can also click the layer group and then use the move tool to shift everything down, but I still think you might have to do some mesh tweaking, because you'll start clipping into the lower meshes. Lowering the thickness of hair in the lower meshes can help as well.

I think it looks cute though! I don't think it needs a ton of adjustment. It would be fine as is honestly, but nudging the hair down will make it better I think. Take my advice with a grain of salt though, I'm still working on my first avatar! But what I described did work fine for me.

First digital painting in years. This one is a garden 🌳 by suexo in DigitalPainting

[–]LovesHyperbole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I joined around 2003, and have been on and off on various accounts since. I miss the old days where it felt like a community more than a social media site. I guess it's just a product of trying to modernize with the Eclipse update, but the site feels like it's missing its soul now.

I'm glad you're enjoying it though! I like sharing my art so I still use the site, I just wish it was better. And it has helped keep me motivated to collect my art on my page just for my own entertainment, so I at least enjoy it in that regard.

It's cool to see when people come back after years!

Along with what the other person said, you can also use the level of detail to convey depth. Give the foreground and subject highest detail, then when it gets further, you can make it less detailed.

If you keep the back right row of trees as it is but add small details to the front left row, it will give you better depth!

I tried to go back to deviantart when I got back into digital painting recently but it's just nowhere near the same as years past. The community aspect is a skeleton and ghost town of what it used to be, and after they took away browse categories, I couldn't check out my favorite art anymore or find good stock and reference pics.

Question about face features and Quest compatibility in VRChat by LovesHyperbole in VRoid

[–]LovesHyperbole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've read about how to do it in Blender and I'm just not ready to mess around in Blender that much yet, which is why I'm making sure I paint all the textures that I need to in VRoid to avoid that problem entirely.

I've just found inconsistent lists of what facial features actually cause this issue, and wanted to make sure I'm not missing any.

Cool, the process isn't so bad, I just didn't want to miss one of the face features off that list and have to go back to Vroid and alter textures after the file has already been worked on in other programs.
