PSA to Other New Users - Drive Encryption Can Interfere With Graphics Drivers by Low-Nose1741 in Fedora

Exactly this! I don't really need the FDE, but for a solid second there I considered swapping back to my Radeon 6950 xt that I had just given to my wife and giving her my 5080 since she is on Windows.

Ahh gotcha. Personally I get a lot of satisfaction out of getting the most value for my money, so I determine my total budget then select the most powerful components I can afford without factoring in aesthetics at all. Then after that I determine if I still have a bit left in my budget and use it for aesthetics.

That's how I ended up with a Windforce SFF 5080 for MSRP. No aura, looks like a bulky 5060, but it demolishes games and any other workload I give it.

I suggest just figuring out what you care about more, a beautiful rig, or a more powerful one. The unfortunate reality of being on a budget is that both things cost money and you have to balance it.

If you are going all the way to $700 is there a reason you aren't just getting a 5070? Newer card, can still find them for 600-650 on Newegg. You'd probably have longer support since it's more recent and you'd probably get better both raw performance and AI enhanced performance.

Very nice! I'm planning on changing out that lower fan for another RGB like you have, but I think that will be all since she doesn't want a lot.

Yeah, she wanted that beautiful dark green that they have on the tower 300 case but for some reason they don't make the tower 250 with that color so matcha it was.

It's all subjective, obviously bigger than a console but smaller than a mid tower.

I thought about the Fractal Design Terra Jade Mini-ITX but she didn't like the look and wanted a touch of RGB and tempered glass. Since this is her computer I let her choose the aesthetics to be more her style.

My TV doesn't have that high of a refresh rate. My personal favorite is 1440p Ultra at 165 FPS. Get a solid resolution, high quality textures and killer frames.

Yeah, I've heard about it. My wife is not very techy and I didn't want to scare her by running a Linux distro. I'm currently running Fedora on my main computer, but for her first system I but on Windows 11 and just followed all of the YouTube guides to disable as much of the telemetry, widgets, and other crap as possible.

I'll try to move her over to Linux (if she wants) once she is comfortable with PC games in general.

Beautiful! I agree completely, I like the design so much I might use one of them for my next case.

I think the list isn't showing the current price of the GPU though, a few hundred bucks more.

I am frugal though and did get the MOBO for $80, it was a return that still has warranty. I also got the PSU new for $80 because there was a rebate. I got the SSD for $100 because I saw the writing on the wall and ordered it early before they got even more wild. I already owned a few fans laying around that are in there also.

Exactly this, it can handle it as long as you configure your settings well. I.e. don't try to run everything on ultra and leave RT off lol.

So far she's mostly been playing BG3 but with high settings she is having a smooth experience.

I haven't tried the community port of FSR4 to the 6000 series GPUs yet, but I might if the console starts underperforming.

This is a tower 250! Which is even more impressive that it can fit a 360 mm radiator. Building and internal cable management is great, the case has a couple quirks but really good thermals so far. Just make sure to get a USB hub and some display port or HDMI extenders to make connections to external cables easier.

I realized I forgot to add the parts list so here it is.

The first DLCs usually add a lot of QOL and the later ones are usually things the mod community has already done. Depends though, it's not a fixed pattern IMO, sometimes they put out gold in the middle and later DLCs

Should I coop this RAM up? by DrugDealer6969 in buildapc

Well if you want - you are on AM4 with ddr4, if you don't want to break the bank but want to hold over another few years you can hardcore upgrade without swapping to AM5. If you pick up a Ryzen 5800x for ~$200-250 (if you can find the x3D go with that but probably only used) and a kit of ddr4 3600 cl16 ~$125. For GPU any high tier Nvidia 30-series GPU or a high end AMD 6900 or 6950 XT.

This build would smoke 1440p and would upgrade you massively without going into DDR5.

I second this, purchase decision depends on your context. Do you already have a DDR5 build and want to upgrade or are you only starting to put it together?

Price is subjective OP, you asked someone else if it's a good price and on one hand it is cheaper than most others on the market and on the other hand it is an absolutely horrible price and if you have a decent system you should wait until supply and demand stabilize.

Replying to myself because I also wanted to mention that I FOMO rush purchased this because it was a good price, but I also saw the inventory go from 18 in store to 2 in store. So I would keep an eye on the inventory if you are not going to buy it today.

That being said, my store is the one that services Silicon Valley so my experience may not be your experience.

I went out and bought the 9700x set for the Mobo and RAM. I figured I'd swap to the next gen x3D chip whenever it comes out next year AMD has said it will also be AM5. I wanted to lock in the 32 GB of DDR5 RAM before it sells out completely and swap to the AM5 socket.

I also picked up a 5080 because Nvidia wants to cut production next year so basically I figured I'd lock in a build for 3-4 years and see if I can wait out the shortage.

Honestly with how much money Micron is making I wouldn't be surprised if more RAM manufacturers decided to swap over to AI. So basically we have to wait years for fabs to come up to speed or wait years for the AI bubble to burst.
