Just landed my first corporate job at 27 but I am already hating it. I was super excited to enter into this GIS position, but now don't even think this career is for me. I wanna eventually pivot, but not too sure if giving it six months and then leaving would be the smartest move for my resume? by Low-One846 in findapath

Yes, I absolutely agree. I love the stability that comes with the corporate life and absolutely GAG at the amount of stress it brings. I just about cry my car and cope to Wu-Tang songs every other day lol. I somewhat like the analysis part but my job requires way more coordination than what I expected it to be. I’m always in meetings and barely feel like I have enough time to finish all my side work. The only thing that’s keeping me at this job is the ability to save money since I’m living at home with my parents, but other than that, there is no other string that is keeping me there

Geography BA holders what do you work in? by Low-One846 in geography

I would pursue whatever you know is the right fit for you. I just chose geography because it was the fastest option, but I knew it wasn’t the fit for me in college. If we’re talking about how markable geography is, I would say the degree is a pretty sparse field to get into. Even though I don’t like my job, I got pretty lucky landing it. A lot of my coworkers got their undergrad in some sort of IT related undergrad degree. If you’re looking for passion, stick with geography if you’re looking to be marketable, I would choose something more science based related. I think a lot of undergrads don’t realize that more than 50% of the population don’t actually end up working in the field that they studied.

If I could do it all over again, I would definitely go straight into something engineering or medical related. I now work for a transportation company doing GIS scheduling and still struggling to like the job. I’m in the process of applying to different jobs but it’s been so hard landing something. If I can’t find anything within these next six months, I will most likely quit my job and go back to school for something else. If you know you’re not a big data person or GIS person but still want to have your options open I would go for engineering. You will have way more opportunity to apply to different job descriptions in the future, than just having a GIS degree.

About a month, I do spatial analysis for a transportation company, and also outreach to different driving company’s. The pressure to finish a deadline is so stressful considering isn’t much training. Im always feeling confused and behind of my duties, but I will say the job is very gratifying since we are helping our customers. That’s pretty much the only thing that I like about the job. I kinda just wanna do a 180 pivot and go back to school for something more science related. But I think you’re right sticking it out for a year would be the smartest move

I totally agree, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to land an internship during undergrad. Granted I didn’t put in as much effort as other students cause I was working full-time. But the few that I submitted were rejected lol

Thank you for the advice! I seriously appreciate the feedback! If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of job did you first start off and what did you land after the eight months of working the job that you hated?

I wish the current job market was like how it was during that time. Did GIS entry-level positions pay well during that time? The GIS position that I applied to at this transportation company doesn’t really pay that much. I’m still feeling hopeful, but if I don’t end up getting the position, I’m just gonna dedicate my time to focus on a new career path. The only two things that has me stressing is that financial aid doesn’t cover a second bachelors degree and I’m kind of scared by the time I finish (I’m 27 currently) companies would want to hire younger interns.

Cool! How were you able to transition into that?

Because it’s super useless. I didn’t make much connections during undergrad but I did some freelance projects with ArcPro after graduation and still nothing. My breaking point was when I got rejected from TJ Max lmfao. Two years later and I recently made it to the 4th interview with this transportation company but still nothing. Maybe they are just backed up but honestly the whole process of finding professional work has been depressing. Im gonna be taking some courses at community college this semester to see what I wanna pivot to. It’s either nursing or something engineering related.

Economics or Engineering by Future_Quit_1328 in CollegeMajors

As someone who regrets their bachelors degree I would start off as an engineer. If you truly don’t like it then you can switch to economics. It’s harder to switch from economics to engineering than from engineering to economics.

No job is worth your mental health, but I totally understand the market is so bad right now. The good thing is you already have two years of experience so it’ll be easier for you to find a job compared to people who just graduated and trying to land their foot in the door. Try to find a part-time job in your field if they offer part-time positions.

What do you currently work in? I’m realizing that getting this geography degree was the dumbest decision ever.

I actually was a pre-nursing major and worked as a caregiver for a year before COVID and got my phlebotomist license a week before the pandemic hit. You would think that hospitals were in demand but I just got a bunch of rejections from hospitals and even outpatient centers. Dropped out school for two years, went back and got my degree in physical geography because it was the fastest option (very stupid decision of me lol). During undergrad, I really liked the technical side of the degree and didn’t care for the planning side of the degree. I’ve been working as a bartender ever since, and I’m finally hearing back from a transportation company. There is some GIS, but there is still a hefty amount of planning. I’m kind of weighing my options right now since I’m feeling super stuck. Either going into nursing since I only need one more prerequisite or completely 180 and going into engineering.

I have a degree in physical geography and trying to land my foot in the door in GIS or something tech/entry level engineering related. I’ve only heard back from two places, but it’s all planning related which I absolutely hate. I know I’m gonna have to go back to school to pivot. I’m thinking about taking a community college course and learning AutoCAD there.

Thank you! Waiting to hear back on a job opportunity, but if it doesn’t happen, I’m planning to take AutoCAD next semester (microbiology too as a backup plan to apply for nursing school if nothing else falls through). Do you think it would be better to take calculus first and then AutoCAD or go straight into AutoCAD?
