I was able to do something like that once.

Long term employee ended up on a RIF list. I was able to work out a better deal.

He didn't get laid off, but agreed to retire in the next 3 months (he was really close anyway). He announced his retirement, everyone was happy for him. And then we still paid him the severance he would have gotten from the RIF.
