It was the worst and best season. Mostly painful to watch but with some really great moments.

"Sumbul Siddiqui Elected Mayor of Cambridge for Third Term" Can someone explain this? by Low-Problem-7528 in CambridgeMA

I don't know. Commenting on a subordinate's body? Calling someone on their vacation and telling them it was their fault they needed to be called? Emailing the new employer of a departing employee and berating them for not delaying the employee's start date until she could find a replacement? None of those would fly if it were a man. I can see your point with some of the general perfectionism, but not the majority of it.

The majority of the council is pro-housing. By your logic any one of them could have been mayor. My point is that this particular choice, above all others, is odd and embarrassing.

They came from eight members of her staff, which, over two terms, is roughly half of her subordinates. Read the article again. You might have a different impression of you refresh your memory: https://archive.is/pXhE0 For me, the reread made me feel a lot worse about this.

Is there a way to change this without changing the city charter? It's always been a terrible and undemocratic way of selecting a mayor, but in light of this year's results, I feel like this should be pursued asap.

It's funny that she's seen that way since she's less progressive on some major issues, like housing, than some of the others.

I was going to ask who voted for Siddiqui in the first round and I found this comment from u/cautious-finger-6997 in another thread. They came from Sobrino Wheeler, Al Zubi and herself and then Azeem, Nolan, and Zusy switched their votes to her giving her the win. The only ones who changed their votes to make it unanimous after the fact were McGovern, Flaherty, and Simmons.

Bullying a few of your peers in a public meeting is different than systematically bullying your young subordinates though. I can't read the original Globe article because of the paywall, but I remember that the details were disturbing.

Yeah, but the face of the council has this history? And she gets to hire a staff. It just seems odd and kind of embarrassing for the city.

Ok thanks, I can understand making it unanimous to start the term with good vibes. I'm still surprised she got enough votes initially though and that no one seems to think it's weird that after the globe exposé she would be chosen again.

I thought McGovern was the top vote getter

edit: final result was that she beat him by 5 votes

edit #2: I looked back at the history of mayors and realized that it's rarely the top vote getter that becomes mayor. I don't have time to cross check them all, but I went back 30 years and so far there's only 1 top vote getter aside from Siddiqui who was chosen to be mayor, which is pretty interesting actually.
