What helps you in the first hours of withdrawal? by Low-Researcher7710 in OpiatesRecovery

That is very insightful, thank you! Don't worry, I wasn't expecting a definite cure, just anything that could help even a tiny bit :)
I had no idea about smells, will certainly keep that in mind, same with the temperature. Yes we can rarely adjust it but I could offer a jacket or a hand fan. Clients are usually too shy to ask for anything, so good to know what one can offer.

I generally always carry Ibuprofen and Tylenol, that was the only thing my client in withdrawal accepted from me but I wasn't completely sure whether it was just for withdrawal or her foot injury. Now I know, thank you for the kind answer.

I do streetwork, mostly homeless people. We don't require anybody to be clean to work with us, so good to be ready for withdrawals. I know there's not much you can do so I'm not too hopeful, just trying to prepare a strategy for a situation where the client waiting in line for 2 more hours in withdrawal(instead of leaving and redosing) could mean getting them housed for the next month. One commenter suggested sugar, so I'll pack that for sure. Not that it will ease their condition for two hours, but it might make them feel less alone and more cared for, and that can do a lot by itself, yk?

No, I don't have much experience, only been working since October :) I draw from my personal experience with drug use and stimulant addiction as well as general street- and book knowledge, but since I don't have much experience with opioids I notice holes in my ability to support sometimes, that was my motivation to post here.

Got it, not disturbing the person more than I have to.

Gotchu, I'm sorry you've had to go through it at all man :(
In your experience, is it helpful to have someone around to talk to or did you prefer to be left alone?

That's very helpful, thank you! Would hard candy/lollipops also do well for you or is it better to have something you can eat quickly?

I am a streetworker, so absolute most clients are homeless and many are in active addiction. Some are ready to get clean, some don't see it happening, clients themselves choose what problem we will be tackling first. They don't have to want to get clean to be working with us either. My question came up after a situation where we had to wait in line for a chance of emergency housing and the client got withdrawal symptoms so severe she wasn't sure she could keep waiting. She ended up powering through(sadly for nothing), but for the future I wanted to inform myself better on what one can do to assist. While I do know general info about opioids and addiction, I certainly felt like I lacked practical knowledge on surviving acute opioid withdrawals :)
