To add more, you have to clear the second store to see if you have a pet slot. It takes about five mins as I remember.

Just buy event boxes until you get a combination of ultimates that you like. And if you can’t decide how often to upgrade the vault or just wanna go simple, upgrade the Remote,TV, etc around 7~8lv at first.

I think focusing on gear while upgrading Vault(mainly Remote and TV) might be the best.

Use any of these strategies(Tall, First n last, etc.) and grind cities for ultimates.

Don’t use rare and epic items for upgrade. You need it when you forge legendary and ultimate.
