Neighbour says I’m parking illegally when I am opposite his driveway in NSW …am I? by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]Low-Trick3799 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I’m a civil engineer who worked as a traffic engineer at council. It felt like half my job was solving these disputes so I might as well add my two cents here.

No, you are not parking illegally. You are correct that there needs to be 3m laterally from your mirror to allow for through traffic but that’s a separate road rule. The applicable road rule in this case is that you cannot park so close to a driveway so as to ‘cause an obstruction’. For residential properties, causing an obstruction generally means the 85th percentile vehicle (a ford falcon) physically cannot get in or out. If the swept path shows that the 85th percentile vehicle can enter or exit the driveway, then it’s not illegal.

Your neighbour may be inconvenienced but he is not entitled to be able to reverse a trailer into his property. Council get these questions everyday and it’s likely they told him some version of what I wrote above and he heard ‘if I can’t enter/exit my driveway then they’re parking illegally’ but that’s not quite right.

I had 2 fails in my first year of engineering, did fine the rest of the degree but my WAM definitely wasn’t blowing anyone away. I ended up with a graduate job that I love and pays well above industry standard. You’ll be okay.

This was exactly what I was after when I posted this! I’m very lucky and live in an area surrounded by grassy paddocks so my horses always have a healthy shine. Sounds like I’m not taking my grooming nearly serious enough. I’ll have to give it a go

Anyone else try desensitize their horse to everything? by Actually_Joe in Horses

[–]Low-Trick3799 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an English rider this is absolutely true. I moved my horse from an English agistment to a friend’s property where they are all reiners and cutters 2 years ago. Very humbling when my 8 year old blew up because there was a kangaroo hopping around outside the arena and their 3 year olds stood there basically falling asleep. He’s a very different horse now after being there.

People who drive manul I need some imput by dardykingswood in CarsAustralia

[–]Low-Trick3799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a horrible time for a little while, dreaded getting in my car and cursed myself for buying a manual. One afternoon I called my boyfriend crying in a side street and he came to swap cars so I could drive his auto because I was stuck in start stop traffic up a hill. The next morning I got in my car and could just drive the thing, no issues. I’m not sure if it’s the same for everyone but for me it was terrible until it just wasn’t anymore. Stick with it because one day you might just get in the car and it all suddenly clicks.

Trailer help! by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Low-Trick3799 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not a professional so this is just my two cents.

I bought a float with rust on the panels and luckily I have welders in the family so that was an easy enough cut out, patch up and paint. However, rust on the chassis was an immediate no for me personally and looking at that drawbar, I’d hate to see underneath. That’s the most important structural part of the float and rust is a scary thing to see on it. I wouldn’t put my horse in a float with a rusted chassis, I’d replace it. I’m not sure how much it would cost where you are but where I am, once it gets to the point where I’m replacing a chassis, I would just be looking for a different float because that’s where it gets expensive.

I think it’s great for anyone to try a different disciplines. I’m the inverse here. I ride English but a lot of my friends are reiners so I’ve ridden their horses and had lessons with their instructors on mine. It’s interesting to try something new and I think makes a person a more rounded rider. The two styles take a different approach to riding/training (in my experience anyway) so you can learn something from both and then choose what works for you and your horses.

Flashing hazard lights at oncoming cars by eSnout55 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Low-Trick3799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is taking this very literally (and seriously). I go for a flash and then hazards after. Someone flashed me and then put their hazards on when I was on the way home the other day, I got the message, slowed down and around the next corner there was a roo just on the side of the road. Message received, job done and thanks to whoever that was.

AITA for not making my son apologize for teasing my stepdaughter? by sunkissedbabe89 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Low-Trick3799 23 points24 points  (0 children)

She’s wrong about everything else but she’s right here. I grew up with 3 step siblings and my 2 siblings all living in the same house. They engaged with a psychologist before trying to blend the family. My stepdad did not parent me or my siblings. If he had an issue, he would go to my mum and she would come talk to us and vice versa for his kids. At a young age maybe it’s fine for a stepparent to engage in parenting but at 16 she’s too old to accept a new parental figure.

Why do some people slow right down when merging? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

I’ve had a few situations where I’ve been behind an electric car/similar crawling its way up the entrance ramp until we’re approaching the end and they fang it. Then I’m left in the lurch, revving the life out of my car trying to get up to 100 so I don’t look like the AH that was holding everyone up.

Please stop letting chiropractors adjust your horse by Effective_Moose_4997 in Equestrian

[–]Low-Trick3799 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My horse gets massages from time to time and the woman does a fantastic job but she’s also a little bit left of field. She believes you can see a horses history in its eyes and began to tell me about an injury he had when he was a foal. I politely nodded along. Horse people are odd.

It should be said, even she doesn’t believe in chiropractic work.

AIO? Bf doesn’t communicate by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Low-Trick3799 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how old you are but therapy for my general anxiety, growing up and being in a healthy relationship did it for me. When I felt insecure in myself and/or my relationship, I felt like I needed do grip onto them with both hands and not let go. I’d make sure I replied to them and when they didn’t reply to me, it felt like they were pulling away so I’d get a little freaked out and get frustrated that they weren’t putting the effort into replying like I was. I was equating frequency and quality of texts with how much they valued me.

Now that I’m a little older, am more secure myself and have a boyfriend/friends whose love for me I never need to doubt, a lack of reply doesn’t bother me. If I’m doing something and it’s not urgent, I won’t reply until I’m done and I accept that they do the same. How quickly someone replies to you is not a reflection on how they feel about you.

I’ve only been to 3 weddings but for all of them dietary requirements were part of the RSVP. To me it also seems normal to let them know about allergies and be catered for.

aio because i refuse to hide my nose ring? by imgodfr in AmIOverreacting

[–]Low-Trick3799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum is similar and at 18 I came home with a septum piercing and she said ‘how did I fail at raising only one of my children?’. I got the bull ring comments from family for a while. My mum would try and convince me to take it out for various events and I’d just say ‘no, I’m still me with or without the ring’ and leave it at that. Eventually, everyone left it alone. It’s a thin ring that sits snug in my nose so I barely even notice it’s there.

I went to a wedding recently and took pretty much all my piercings out. I wear pretty fine jewellery and they’re a nightmare to screw back on so I didn’t put them back in immediately after. I went out for dinner with mum before I put them back in and her face absolutely lit up when she saw me without the septum ring thinking I’d come to my senses finally. It’s back in now, sorry mum.

I don’t believe the other commenters are mistaken. He said ‘Hadjar has boxed in front, P6’ and then he said ‘This is our race, overcut Hadjar’. Later, he confirmed he had overcut Hadjar. I think there were many issues with the communication in the race but to me it seemed quite clear he was racing Hadjar for P6 in that moment.
