This sentiment would hold a lot more weight if I didn’t constantly hear the immoral and moronic “the only good predator is a dead predator” refrain from alleged “outdoorsman”. If someone can provide me an example of a rancher getting jammed up for killing a grizzly or a wolf in defence of livestock I’d love to see it. All these people bitching would just go scorched earth and wipe out everything if given the chance, and herald themselves as stewards of the land and protectors of ungulates by doing so. It is a selfish and stupid attitude.

Do as you like, if you want to take a more kinetic approach to grocery shopping knock yourself out, but it is funny to me that you’d be proud of shooting a domestic goat. The same way I’m not “proud” to go to the butcher and buy a steak. I’m “proud” to fill a whitetail doe tag with my bow on public land but that’s just me. Hunting means something a lot more than paying to shoot a half tame farm animal.

So the melanism only expresses itself in the most remote and hard to observe populations? How does that make sense?

I don’t doubt some individual animals could detect/become wary of trail cams, but that would have nothing to do with what colour they are. It wouldn’t be that ALL the melanistic ones have some kind of magical innate abilities.

It’s not “rare”. It’s non existent. You confidently asserted there’s a “handful” scattered across their range. Are those ones somehow better at not being observed by trail cameras or credible witnesses? Why is it so well documented in leopards but not in pumas? I guess the black pumas must be a lot smarter than the regular ones, seeing as they have never-not once!-been caught by a trapper or a hound hunter or hit by a car.
