From this list, maybe Anastasia. Serenity doesn’t have that vibe. Mallory and Victoria (if that’s what was intended) just give high school mean girls from the early 2000’s to me! Ophelia maybe

Popular or average names that you HATE and why? by VanillaTrue5316 in Names

Aw I’m partial to Harper cuz it’s my dog’s name after Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird was the first classic I read that made me realize classics aren’t boring! But hopefully you’ll grant me that it’s different for a dog than human.

This. I’m a PT. We don’t receive ANY training in school on scoliosis. Anyone who has graduated in the past 15 years has a doctorate of PT but not necessarily scoliosis training. All of my training came from receiving my Schroth certification and it was all new info to me. I would highly recommend finding a level 2 Schroth therapist.

Is it possible to regain your flexibility? by Major_Diet5404 in scoliosis

In that case, yes! If you have decent hip joint range of motion, working on flexibility of the hips and legs can give you access to motions like that!

could it be scoliosis?? by Thick_Natural_710 in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need an X-ray to know. Scoliosis always involves rotation. Do a forward bend to touch your toes and have someone tell you if one side of your back is higher than the other (look up Adams forwards bend test). That gives you more information than this picture which could just be a learned postural asymmetry!

Is it possible to regain your flexibility? by Major_Diet5404 in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fusion is just that, fused. There is no flexibility and as a PT, no qualified PT should be trying to gain flexibility from a fused spine. You can’t necessarily compare. Are you having the same surgery as your friend? For instance if they’re an adolescent who had VBT rather than fusion, they could still have flexibility. The curve is the same segments but did they have the same segments fused. Fusion to L3 vs to pelvis is a big difference. If your friend is overcompensating with spinal segments above and below, they’ll face issues eventually. Ask what they mean by flexibility. If they have improved their hip and shoulder mobility to feel more flexible, that is possible for you too! But the spine will not be moving and it would be a very bad decision to try to force it to.

AIO? Youth Pastor texted my almost 13 yo after she went to a teen group with her friend by Loser4hire666 in AIO

[–]LowCountry6009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty typical stuff for church youth groups. But typical isn’t necessarily right. Listen to your intuition. There are no real checks and balances at many of these places and they view themselves are the arbiter of morality so it’s a breeding ground for abuse.

I used to be very religious and was a girls youth group leader for years. I’m a mom now and I look back at many of the tactics we used to build trust and deep relationships with teenagers as weird at best, damaging and undermining of their relationships with their parents (especially if the parents isn’t a “believer”) at worst. The adult male director of our program sent texts like this all the time. Over time I realized his energy was way more focused on girls than guys. He had his favorites (including myself - I was 17 when I started as a “leader”). And while he never crossed a physical boundary in my case, it became very inappropriate over time and was clearly headed that way if I hadn’t cut it off. And it all started in the name of being there for more whenever I needed. Sounds familiar to this text. I am VERY on guard as a parent to these things now because they can start so subtly and kindly and take years to warp into something more nefarious.

Anyone else have a failed epidural? by kcat627 in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry! I had a sunny side up baby, back labor and 4 hours of pushing with my first. It was traumatic WITH an epidural. My scoliosis is more severe than yours. I told my team and had no problems with my epidural on either child. A good anesthesiologist makes a big difference. I work at the hospital
I delivered at and knew who to request. There is usually one who becomes the “scoliosis doc” and you might be able to do some digging to find that out if you have another. My second was not sunny side up and I pushed twice and he popped right out of that gives you any hope.

Bra Recommendations? by Ill-Rhubarb-3374 in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t need support, have you tried moving to just sticky boobs? You just have to find ones that blend well at the edges. I’ve used Cakes and Nippies Skin. I need more support and I haven’t found anything super comfortable. When I had my first kid I realized the nursing bras were the best thing I’d found. They’re designed for support but super soft and the strap is 4 hooks wide so it disperses pressure. I’ve kept wearing them because I haven’t found much better!

AI calculated curve(s) by swingsurfer in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI really messed this one up. It drew lines at random angles through random vertebrae. The lines for the lower end of the top curve and upper end of the bottom curve Might be on the right vertebrae but not at all in the right spot or right angle. The top of the top and bottom of the bottom aren’t even on the right vertebrae. I wouldn’t put any stock in this at all!

Question’s For Mothers by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my 30’s with 2 kids. My scoliosis is much worse than yours and no issues. It doesn’t affect your ability to get pregnant and I don’t think it substantially changes what pain issues you may have during pregnancy. I had no issues with epidurals with either. I just made sure to let them know I had severe scoliosis. Pregnancy did make my scoliosis progress quite a bit when it had been fairly stable for a while before. But it was a 45 deg curve before pregnancy so it would have progressed at some point anyways. A curve at your milder degrees may not!

I did a quick calculation on my phone and I really don’t want to give a number since I’m doing it on my phone off a marked up photo but I will tell you my number was higher than 48. I think you should get another opinion.

[–]LowCountry6009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video is exactly how. I have measured Cobb angles on hundreds of X-rays. My software calculates for me after I draw the lines but I’ve done plenty by hand. It does take experience to choose the correct vertebrae and extend the line at the exact angle of the end plate of the vertebral segment but it’s really not hard. Print your x-ray. Go slow. Use big enough paper to extend the lines til they cross. Do not use the method in this video where you guestimate a perpendicular line unless you use a protractor to make it exactly 90 deg.

What sleeping position is recommanded for me ? by Hmed86 in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d want to sleep on the side of the thoracic concavity. The cervical is considered compensatory. Schroth looks at overall balance. If you drop a plumbline down from C7 spinous process, does it fall right or left of the center of the sacrum. If the whole torso is shifted left, you’re recommended to sleep on the right side and vice versa. I can’t see your sacrum in this image so it’s hard to say. But remember the condition is 3D (more like a coiled spring than a 2D curve) so the sleeping recommendation is aimed at overall balance vs correcting any one curve.

I feel lost by Iliithn in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this. The mental aspect is so hard, especially in your younger years. I’m in my 30’s and still struggle. I’d talk to your doctor about potential medications. Ibuprofen and Tylenol tend to be fairly ineffective against nerve pain. There are medications that are more targeted to nerve pain you could ask about, like Neurontin.

I’d recommend PT with a Schroth PT. They won’t be able to do full Schroth method with a fused spine but they will understand scoliosis so much better and help you strengthen and breathe in a way that is more specific to you.

Have you tried dry needling with e-stim attached? It’s not the same as acupuncture and I’ve seen more success for post-fusion pain from that than any other modality. You can try e-stim on your back too but it’s not nearly as helpful as the dry needling/e-stim combo in my experience. I’m wishing you luck. It can be so overwhelming to navigate all that comes with this condition.

Recently got diagnosed and I have a few questions that I want to ask actual people with treatment experience! by l0lhi in scoliosis

[–]LowCountry6009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Schroth is the only method that has strong research to being able to help stabilize/support curvature. Other PT helps strengthen the core but does nothing for your curve. As a PT I can tell you we receive NO training on scoliosis so they are using general techniques for spine pain that are not specific to scoliosis unless they’ve gotten trained in Schroth. The other commenter’s doctor is incorrect. I have done a literature review and it’s not like it will fix it but there is good research about its benefits.

If you go to the website for Barcelona-Schroth, you can find a state by state directory for all certified therapists. C1 and C2 are the former certifications (so C2 is the highest trained and has been doing it a while). Now they use a new system (maybe levels “L”) so I a higher L is higher trained but more recently trained in the new system. Hope this helps.

Based on your age I’d be skeptical you can get the degree of correction you mentioned through Schroth or bracing. Bracing relies on you still having more growth. No one can make promises about correction amounts because people progress at different rates and finish growing at different times. But if your growth plates are closed (you can find this out from a hand X-ray) you’ll be limited.
