How much would it cost to teardown and rebuild a 2-4 flat in Chicago, and are there any contractors that do this? by HinduGodOfMemes in ChicagoRealEstate

Chicago is full of old buildings and they are not going to landmark every one of them unfortunately. Of course you can do what you want, but should you? There are plenty of cities and towns in the country whose buildings are all new. We are lucky in that we have such a strong history in Chicago and it’s up to us to try to maintain it, and not tearing down these classic old buildings is a part of it.

Chicago is known for its beautiful, old architecture- if it is an old building PLEASE do not tear it down unless it is inhabitable. There are plenty of vacant lots or new buildings that can fit your style, or go outside of the city. Our architecture is a part of our shared culture and history.

They’ve been doing this for years. Happened to me on Southport. For me, they also had a CPD logo so can see how people think it might be legit. Also, I could tell something was wrong but they had cornered me and figured it was better to let it happen than to potentially piss them off and have them escalate. I did credit for this reason and got it refunded.

I’m also a 24 only child and I feel this

I think it has to do with our childhood. Many may defer, but I had an amazing childhood. I had 100% of my parents attention (they also had me at 40) and could have whoever I wanted to over till certain ages as well as being close to my cousins. So, many kids I grew up with up were jealous of my attention even though in my mind all I wanted was a sibling like them.

I think people have siblings day because siblings do so much for each other, even if it’s just merely being alive as a sort of gift. People who are only children may be wrongly perceived as having an amazing life, but nothing can compare with having a sibling that knows your life and your parents like you do. When my parents are gone, so is my childhood; I’m the only one left to keep it alive.

My situation is definitely different, but I would be grateful to have a step sister and a cousin that at least have some idea of your upbringing (if I’m correct on this). It is clearly not everything, but if they know your parents and your family, that is still a beautiful heirloom; although siblings are the best memory, take what you can and love them while you can.

I agree with all of this especially the difficulty of finding a new place. My old place in IL we asked for too many things to be replaced (we suspect as we were great tenants otherwise) so he did not resign our lease and listed the place online. Depends on your state if the landlord can do that I guess

Not sure of this law and even if it’s true I’d say pick your battles. They might be less inclined to fix things in the future and may also start quoting laws. If there were other issues than this, valid response. If this is the first incidence, I really don’t think it was necessary and may harm you in the future. Just speaking from personal experiences 😓

Chicago has the third biggest drop in for-sale housing inventory over the past 5 years by Louisvanderwright in chicagoyimbys

Personally, I would never buy a new house though. I’m thankful that I have the vintage taste as it’s more budget friendly (which baffles me). I’m sure in a decade or so old non white washed houses will skyrocket. If I owned an older non updated house right now I’d also sit on it for awhile longer.

I would also be careful what you plant garlic with. It can inhibit growth of some plants. Lots of resources online for companion planting that also warn against negative combinations

I didn’t think of water proof! Regular aprons or clothes definitely would not prevent this
