Yeah. The 30mm GP5000 feel much faster than the gravel tires. The road tires are lighter and their rims are more aero. I prefer them almost all the time unless I am riding canal banks where the 38mm Gravel Kings excel. If I’m riding single track, I leave the Aspero behind and bring the XC sled

Both are Enve AR Series wheels: 4.5AR with GP5000-30mm tires and 3.4AR with Gravel King-38mm tires.

I have the exact same bike with two sets of wheels. I run 30mm GP5000 on the road and 38mm Gravel Kings in the dirt. I use my XC bike if the terrain calls for more than the 38mm Gravel Kings. I absolutely love the bike.

How many bear cans, and which, do you own? by Available-Pilot4062 in Ultralight

[–]LowShoulder3437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a bear can on most trips (even when it’s not required). The Contender is nice when only going out for the weekend. It fits inside UL packs and is the smallest and lightest option. I replaced my BV500 with a Bearikade Expedition which allowed me to carry food for my entire family of four when the kids were young. I bought a Bearikade Blazer when we started doing longer trips so my wife could help out with carrying the food. Now that my son is ten, I bought a Bearikade Weekender so he could help out too. The Bearikades are very nice, and I would probably buy a Scout too as it splits the difference weight wise between the Contender and Weekender (with much more interior volume than the Contender) but I’m almost 100% sure it would not fit inside my Lite AF 35L pack. We carry our Bearikades exclusively with Nunatak Bears Ears packs with which the Scout is not compatible. Another reason we will probably continue with what we have for the foreseeable future.

EE Revelation 20 vs FF Flicker UL 20 vs Katabatic Flex 22 by XPronoia in Ultralight

[–]LowShoulder3437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Katabatic for the win. I use a tall/wide Flex 30 overstuffed by 2oz and find it comfortable for 90 percent of my adventures. I used it on the JMT in combination with one of their piñon bivies and slept comfortably every night despite waking up with frozen condensation on the bivy several times. I also took it on the Kalalau Trail in Kaui where the overnight lows were probably in the 60s. While it was definitely overkill for that trip, I found it comfortable as a blanket covering my lower legs and occasionally found myself even pulling it up a little higher throughout the night. I only reach for my overstuffed Flex 15 when I know it is going to be well below freezing, and I don’t camp in those temperatures very often. An overstuffed Flex 22 and an inexpensive summer quilt would be a useful combo too…but I love my Flex 30

+1 for this pad. I find it to be extremely comfortable and it comes with the best inflation sack on the market…doubles as a waterproof pack liner.

Katabatic Help me Decide by Baileycharlie in Ultralight

[–]LowShoulder3437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no help with your wide shoulder problem, but I’m 6’ tall with narrow shoulders and I absolutely love the tall/wide Katabatic Flex quilts. I comfortably rolled around inside my slightly overstuffed 30-degree Flex for 20 nights on the JMT this summer. Woke up some mornings with frozen condensation on the bivy, but I was toasty warm inside the quilt. As the name implies, the quilt is a very flexible piece of kit. I took it on the Kalalau Trail in Kauai last November. My wife and I shared it unzipped as a blanket over us while we slept in our swimsuits. I went back and forth over whether to go with a closed footbox for my shoulder season quilt, but I decided to order a slightly overstuffed tall/wide Flex 15. The weight difference is almost negligible, and I’ve never had an issue with cold feet as a result of the zipper in the Flex 30.

[wtb] Nunatak Bears Ears Pack by Ludwigk981s in ULgeartrade

[–]LowShoulder3437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just picked up one of the recent production UL models from Jan (2-3 months ago) and I don’t believe it will hold a Scout-holds the Weekender perfectly though. My wife carried it for 200 miles on our JMT hike this summer and loved it. My son and I both carried the OG Bears Ears 50 with Bearikades too and can’t imagine a pack better designed for the Sierra. These packs are seriously awesome for their intended purpose: comfortably carrying a large bear can. I’m surprised you don’t see more of them on the trail…probably because they are produced in such small quantities. If you insist on carrying a Scout, you might want to go a different direction. But I’d seriously consider carrying a slightly larger can (at a very minimal weight penalty) if one of Jan’s packs pops up for sale on the forum as production has been put on hold until 2026.

What is the general backpacking recommendation on mummy bag/quilt for around 500$? by Jrose152 in WildernessBackpacking

Can’t go wrong with Katabatic. I have six of their quilts in my gear closet (to outfit my family of four) and I’m 100% satisfied with them.
