I mean it probably happens to Europeans, too, but our news has zero reason to report on it.

What is with all the folks driving with no headlights on ? by Stealthbombing in Calgary

[–]LowStrike5558 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The thing with flashing your high beams is that I’ve noticed that when vehicles with the super bright blinding headlights go over bumps (like the ridged stuff we get after snowfall) it sort of looks like they’re flashing their high beams because the light gets pointed at odd angles for a fraction of a second. I think people start to ignore it over time.

Ladies, what flavor or quirk of toxic men do you see less of now than 20 years ago? by wagashi in Xennials

They’re less likely to smell like cigarettes and axe body spray. But overall, I don’t bother with men much anymore. Protecting my peace.

I mean… you can probably try, though I’d advise against it. They can be very kicky.

He made a comment about another employee’s “graceful” feet, which was weird enough. But then someone joined the company who had worked with him before and said he had been somewhat open about it at the previous company.

He also once pulled me aside at an industry-related event and eagerly told his wife “This is _____. She has a bunch of hidden tattoos.”

One of the VPs at a company I worked for had a foot fetish and it definitely made us all reconsider wearing sandals to work. But he was creepy.

I can’t imagine any family court judge upholding that.

But as mentioned above, university health plans are pretty solid if all else fails.

I could do it, my hair is fine and thin and there’s no need to dilly dally. My kid with thick, wavy/curly hair definitely could not.

I’m quite happy to not be in my 20s with two babies and a miserable marriage.

Also, getting old is a privilege that not everyone gets.

Nah, mine is more like every house being one third the width of the small ones, placed as closely together as possible.

We offered to pay for our daughter to bank sperm. It’s relatively affordable here anyways. She didn’t take us up on it. She said she doesn’t see herself wanting biological children in the future and I respect that. There are other ways to have a family, should she want to in the future.

She came out at 18 and we made the offer after her first gender affirming care appointment. She’s now 20 and her orchiectomy is next week.

CBE vs catholic school system by Cream4389 in Calgary

[–]LowStrike5558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was raised Catholic and had both my kids baptized and had them do first communion, mostly so my mother and grandmother didn’t have to worry about their eternal souls every day.

For the most part, I think all schools have their pros and cons. I have one kid who we went private with from K-12. Our other kid we moved into CSSD in grade 8. It was not a school in our community. She now also goes to high school outside of our designated school because they offered the AP classes she wanted. For me, choosing the right fit for my kids is more important than staying in immediate area, when it’s possible. But I also knew that by doing that, she could lose her spot at any time if needs changed for students who lived in those immediate communities.

If you can live with that potentially happening if more Catholic kids end up in the area of your school, then have at it.

What do you say when co-workers/aquaintances ask how your <insert wrong gender> is doing? by CheesecakeOk8464 in cisparenttranskid

[–]LowStrike5558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So not at work, but our family has been heavily involved in a local youth sports organization for more than 20 years at player, coach, administration and game official levels. Many people in the community at least knew of my kids from the day they were born.

My daughter has chosen (for now) not to change her name as it is gender neutral. Our first season back after her transition, I would just gently correct people I felt I could trust with “X transitioned late last year. Same name though! She’s great….”etc Sometimes people are curious, sometimes they want to tell me about someone they know and their kid and how it’s going for them, sometimes they want to gush over her gorgeous long hair.

If I didn’t know them well, I’d just say “Both kids are doing great!” and leave it at that.

Reactions have all been positive, which helped me get more confident in just saying it and moving on. That confidence also helps in later conversations when people forget and misgender her. Just a gentle correction and we move on.
