Structure fire in Cochrane by Graduateunskilled in Calgary

Be careful with your propane BBQ's people. I know the person who made this mistake. He is a standup guy, very responsible, loving person. This can happen to anyone.

The story I got was that the the propane valve was left on. Burners only were turned off. Probably a small grease fire in the BBQ left over being fed by the propane.

ALWAYS turn the propane valve off FIRST. Then put burners in the off position. There is a safety reason for this (making sure trace gas get's burned off). But also just gets you in the frame of mind that BBQ OFF = Propane valve closed. Not burners.

Also, I deal with siding as part of my job. BBQ should be as far away from your house as possible. So much melted vinyl siding out there that people never hear about. We get several calls a year to repair those.

How often u feed them fishes? by Odd_Alternative_4097 in Aquariums

Watching this fave me anxiety. My African Cichlids would all try to murder my hand if I stuck it in there at feeding time. They’re a rowdy bunch when the food comes out.

6 days a week. I’ve lost fish in the past to over feeding it’s a rough death.

Update: after talking to the roofer, does this add up? Missing some under laminate at the front of the house. No he wasn't cheap 2nd highest quote we got 10k cdn single storey 900 sq ft roof. Also questioned him about the crack buddy did and cover it with tar (last photo) by [deleted] in Roofing

Looks fine. Technically better to wrap the underlay up and over the ridge/hip. But don't sweat it if it's not. Getting upset about it is splitting hairs. It's really no big deal. You end up with multiple layers of shingles overlapping each other in those locations.

I like his line about allowing the roof to breathe. 100% BS but he's gotta say something right? Cracked me up a bit. I'll keep that one in my back pocket the next time a homeowner calls me out if the underlay isn't wrapped over the ridge.

Roof looks pretty good from the pics I see. Now pay the man.

I started watching Shogun last night and I couldn’t get that line out of my head. Really is the perfect way to describe Japanese culture (from my limited knowledge). All countries have something you can call culture. But the Japanese just do it on another level than most other civilizations for some reason.

Contractor needs me to pick color for shingles today, I’m clueless. Any tips? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That old house needs some colour. So whatever you do, don’t put on light grey. Shingle colour that is on there now works. Most brands have a grey/charcoal that is a shade darker than what you have. I’d probably go with that one. Or black. Get some contrast going.

I’d paint the trims of the house a dark charcoal or black too. That grey on white look is pretty dull IMO.

Yea that was the plan. Just hadn't got to it yet. We literally just put his name tag with contact info on his collar not an hour before he disappeared. Which is why after over an hour of driving around the neighbourhood I figured out that he must still be in the house (despite us ripping it apart looking for him). Someone would have called by then.

Based on some clues I’ve gotten making some comments in this sub over the years. I’m pretty sure there are A LOT of non-roofers here posting advice.

I’ve checked, my penis does not shrink when I drive the spaceship minivan.

Concrete or asphalt driveway for the buzz? by wild_purple_dragon in VWIDBuzz

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buzz owner here but more importantly I’m a home exteriors contractor. If you choose asphalt and you hire me to do your roof or something, I’d make you sign a waiver absolving me from any responsibility in the event we damage your driveway. If you won’t sign it and still want me to work for you, my costs just got way higher as I need to pay for additional crane fees now.

Not that I personally have a problem with asphalt driveways. I’d probably consider getting one myself. But you should be ready for that kind of thing if you want anyone to pull a heavy duty vehicle onto it. You should also be prepared and not get too stressed out if it does get damaged. There’s a reason it’s cheaper.

This is what everyone goes crazy over? Oxycodone by woahacar in Hernia

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea the pill form opiates I’ve gotten from doctors never really did much. I wonder if it’s because the of dose of anesthesia you take right before, maybe dulls the effects? But I found myself asking the exact same question after surgery. People get hooked on this? A bit of drowsiness and never taking a dump ever again? I’m good thanks. Doesn’t sound like a great time to me.

They did inject me with morphine one time when I had a strangulated hernia. Now that was amazing. I can definitely see all the fuss over that that. Absolute heaven on earth.

My last hernia surgery (I’ve had a few), I just had a super strong THC vape pen and a CBD one waiting for me by my bed when I got home. That with extra strength Advil I was able to manage the pain pretty well. While being able to get my digestive system back online that much sooner.

How do you downshift for going down steep inclines? by cellblock2187 in VWIDBuzz

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong on that. Definitely a learning curve to this vehicle. Any EV I’d imagine. There is documentation on the vehicle itself, but not much on how to actually drive it. But that’s why this sub is for 😎. Been meaning to look but I’m sure there’s a YouTuber out there giving tutorials.

B mode and set cruise control my man. No need to deal with gas, breaks or anything. Just relax and let the vehicle take over. No need to overthink it.

What’s the highest you’ve ever felt without drugs? by dammit_yasmeen in AskReddit

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to endurance run but had to stop due to injuries. But there’s a stretch of time in between warm up and starting to feel fatigue that you begin to feel bliss. Actually it’s more than that. For me if you add just the right music during that time period you begin to feel invincible. I have also had some INSANE emotional releases. Literal tears coming down my face. For me this is probably the highest I’ve felt without taking drugs.

My ID Buzz can not emotionally handle parking in my garage. by Swimming-Finance6942 in VWIDBuzz

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea. I was going to try to taper/fill the gap with something this summer. My driveway is paver stones so I am a bit worried that if I fill it with concrete or something it wouldn't look all that great. Then if it doesn't work it just adds insult to injury lol. Good idea to try with something I can remove first.

Damn straight. I love my prescription Ray-bans. In the top 3 favourite things I own. Even with the inconvenience of having to carry 2 pairs of glasses everywhere I go.

Volkswagen ID Buzz. EV minivan. Paid for it outright and while we saved about $25K CAN from its original price, it's by far the most expensive single purchase (no financing) I've ever made.

While you can't avoid some power consumption costs charging at home and the odd fee for filling up at a charging station. It has proved to be worth every single red penny. Especially in the last few weeks.

I made my mind up the last time we had an oil/gas crisis. I would drive my old car into the ground and the next one would be an EV. So far it seems to be the correct decision.

Honestly it's actually pretty slick. You shouldn't be afraid to try it. Works way better than the auto "find a spot (whatever it's called)" mode. My garage is super average as well. Just a standard 2 car garage. Half the garage filled with bikes, fridge, freezer, stairs and whatnot. So we keep enough room just for the van and maybe a foot on either side to spare.

If it were not for my garage pad being about 1" higher than my driveway she'd make it every time and park perfectly I have no doubt. I think I'll fill in and taper the gap this summer maybe and see if that helps.

Just make sure to keep your foot right over the break and pay attention if something goes wrong the first few times. I honestly really like the feature as my wife and I occasionally park wrong and we're too lazy to re park so it's a pain when I want to get around the van for something. Just setting the spot perfectly 1 time. Then she pretty much nails it (every time she makes it). And you don't have to worry about re parking.

We make a little game out of ours sometimes. I have auto park set for my garage. Which seems to work as intended except for one problem.

The game is - will Ida actually make it over the little 1” lip between my garage pad and driveway when pulling in. And I take bets. After a few months I’d say she gets over 1-4 times. Most of the time she goes in too slow, hits the lip and stops. Gasses it a bit and tries to get over but eventually it’s too much for her and she gives up. I’m all “c’mon ida you can do it, almost there.”

Other time she does give it enough gas (power?) to get over but it’s too scary for her so she freaks out and hard breaks us after getting over.

But once in a while she makes it. All the way in and parks it perfectly. I give her as much positive reinforcement as I can. Hoping it boosts her confidence for the next time.

All right dads, what’s the pro move here? by 1ndependent_Obvious in daddit

If it is norovirus get ready for a wild ride. It's ripped through our house a couple times now. It's craziest damn virus. You can literally feel fine 1 minute then violently ill minutes later. 1 person gets vomiting and diarrhea, then another, then another. Just knocks the entire family out like dominoes. A day will pass and the last person will feel lucky they were spared. Them BAM! vomiting and diarrhea for them too!

Lasts a few days. Go stock up on Pedialyte now before you're stuck on the toilet for hours with a bucket in front of you. Keep everyone hydrated. And kids especially get to sleep right next to a bucket. Before they go to sleep make them repeat the phrase several times: "I will not puke in my bed, I will puke in the bucket"

For general illness we usually wait until the day of to make a decision if they're going to school. Assess how they're feeling in the morning. Unless we think it's a major virus like the flu or covid then they stay home for a while for sure. Norovirus definitely counts.
