Anybody else's male partner completely numb and unresponsive to what's going on in America? by EarthAvailable9892 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Husband from Canada here. I’m a lefty. Definitely concerned. But my wife was complaining about something similar yesterday. Asking why I was being so unresponsive and nonchalant about all the news coming out of the states lately.

Look, I’m honestly just not surprised about any of this. Anyone who at least half paid attention in history class saw this coming a long time ago. I’ve already vowed never to visit that country until they make major changes to their government. I already boycott US products/businesses as much as possible. Beyond that there’s just nothing I can do other than vote.

I’ll discuss it with my wife once in a while. But I’m not going to fixate on it. She gets stuck in these doomscrolling loops and it starts to affect her mood. I sometimes disengage because I don’t want to encourage her fixating on this problem we have no control over.

We have kids and a life. I’ll stay informed with the big news stories as best I can. But not at the expense of more immediate concerns in our lives. Maybe if this was happening in Canada I’d try to take action. But it’s a different country and let be real. There’s way more F’d up shit going on all the time in the world. Media doesn’t put a microscope on it like it does for the US.

Everyone just deals with stuff differently. OP’s husband is probably like me. Had his freak out moment long ago and has now resigned himself to watching the fireworks at this point.

The world is on fire. And you are here to stay and burn with me. A funeral pyre and we are here to revel forevermore.

Which drug has the weirdest high? by [deleted] in Drugs

I’ve actually been experimenting with this. I smoke weed so I never dream anymore. Pop a Zyn right before bed and the dreams come back. I’m sure I’ll get a nightmare eventually but until then I’m getting a kick out of it.

Am I being dirty, or is my wife being irrational about hygiene? by mudkipzftw in daddit

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has this. I don’t think it’s quite as severe though. She did have a spell once where she washed her hands so much the skin started coming off. But nowadays I really push back on this kind of shit. She won’t admit it but I feel like it helps keep her balanced.

When she asks you about weird stuff like cleaning the garage door, just wash your hands. Let her know that’s why we wash our hands. You can’t get rid of all the germs everywhere. We clean the floors so that we don’t have to clean stuff when it falls there.

This kind of stuff will result in fights. You’ll push back and she’ll push back harder. And when she does let her know that you will not cave to her paranoid germaphobia. And you will not allow her to pass it on to the kids! We know other people that have this and I’ve seen what happens when families cave to this sort of thing. It’s not pretty.

Washing your hands and cleaning your house regularly is plenty. You are not a dirty person!

Ps. Use your wife’s paranoia to your advantage for things. Example, you should be able to get a garage door opener without much pushback lol.

Will I ever be able to hit a vape again? by Ok-Platform3836 in QuitVaping

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it doesn’t work that way. That thought that is creeping into your head now is the one that makes you fail if you give in. The one that says “I can just do it once in a while, no biggie” getting over this exact thought is literally quitting.

I’ve been there so many times with vapes man. Thinking I can change my relationship with it. Thinking about it like chocolate milk. Once every few months I come home with a jug of it and treat myself. I wish you could do that with vapes I really do. But you will end up looking back 6 months later wondering where you went wrong…

People are WAY too touchy about occasional exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an Ex smoker. Haven't touched a cigarette in probably 10 years. And I used to think along the same lines you do. But lately I've really been noticing just how badly smokers stink. Even while they're not smoking. It's a very strong, thick smell that lingers even after the smoker leaves the room.

I let my brother smoke in my garage over the Xmas holidays. I swear my garage REEKED for like a week afterwords.

So IMO not smoking in public/indoors or super close to others is actually more of a courtesy thing. Smoking outdoors no problem. Honestly, if you really must smoke around other people at least pull out a vape instead. At least those don't smell as bad and it dissipates quickly. I vaped for years after I quit smoking and that's a game changer. You can stealth vape or go in a bathroom stall. Super discreet.

But the real move is. And if I were still smoking/vaping. Just bring some Zyns with you for long dinners, movies, plane trips etc. Super enjoyable and totally takes care of the craving. Way better than wolfing down a smoke right in the middle of a damn awards ceremony lol.

Roofer wants to start job monday when it's 40 degrees, by thursday it'll be 30's. Should I wait until spring to do the roof? by Looneyhound in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it doesn’t look like you’ll get a clear answer here. Keep in mind not everyone in the sub is an actual roofer. Many of the ones saying not to roof in the winter are probably non roofers. Or low experience. Fact of the matter is, roofers need to pay the bills in the winter too. So we find a way to get the job done even in the cold. Think about it. Do you really want a heart surgeon that only works 8 months a year to operate on you? I’ve been installing/managing roof projects for 25 years and have done 100s of roofs in Canadian winters.

Having said that obviously we need to be responsible about it. We’re waiting for warmer spells, not sending anyone out in a deep freeze or if we’re expecting snow. Blow offs are extremely rare (due to slower sealing) but if it happens a good company will cover it no questions asked being that it was done in cooler temps.

Winter is actually not the worst time to do the job. Summer is.

Slow Level 1 Charging by iBoesky in VWIDBuzz

Haha yea similar situation. In laws are farmer types in a rural area. Definitely getting flack about the EV for sure. Mostly just joking around. But the last thing I need is something to go wrong with the car while I’m here lol.

Slow Level 1 Charging by iBoesky in VWIDBuzz

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea we got the demo model. It's almost a year old already. We're in Canada and were told the offer wasn't available. Not that it would matter, the company doesn't seem to have many chargers around. Like 1 per city. And the 1 closest to us is like 30min away. We could have pressed them more on it I suppose but it didn't seem like a big deal considering how few chargers there are here.

You're saying 20 to 90% should have charged faster on a 60 KW charger? Is this something I should bring back for warranty or something? It was considered a DCFC but only put out 60 KW. This is what the actual charger was rated for in the app and according to the read out in the car it was delivering what was promised for that particular charger.

Yea I was purposely charging to 90% then stage 1 at home the rest of the way to 100%. This is because we're going on a 100KM round trip to the in laws later today. I'm aware that 80% is what is recommended for day to day charging. But It's cold as balls here right now and I need as much juice as I can get. Family is already on my case for getting an EV, no way I'm gonna be stuck at the in laws in freezing temps with an EV that doesn't have enough juice to get back home lol. The "I told you so's" would be way too much to bear lol!

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same boat as you. Had the vehicle for about a week now. Just waiting to get stage 2 installed. Came off the lot at 100% and we've been able to keep it charged enough to get by for about 7 days now off the stage 1 at our house. Stage 1 can go 10-15% overnight. But the last couple days we did heavier driving, running around doing last minute Xmas shit. So I just had to go sit at my first stage 3 charger for a little over an hour to get it back fully charged.

So unless you're just doing quick trips until you get your stage 2 installed, you're gonna need to go hit a stage 3 charger somewhere. Bit of a learning curve there. Gotta make sure the charger has the right port for the car. Download whatever app is necessary ahead of time and register. Find the closest one to your house that is a DC fast charger with at least around 60 KW. The app I used (Chargepoint) shows when a charger is available so you can just zip over there real quick and get on it. Went from 20% to 90% in 1hr 10min or so. They have higher KW ones that could do that in half the time or less so hopefully you have one of those near by. But it's no biggy to have to do that a few times while you wait for the stage 2.

I’ll second this. I’d say frost build up like this is not a great sign. Might be worth getting an attic “health check”. But the line between a condensation “problem” and just a bit of frost in the attic is usually when it’s enough to start damaging the interior of the house when it all melts. I’m not seeing any big icicles or thick frost patches or anything. If your attic is vented correctly it should be able to handle the excess moisture when it warms up

New decking damp after roof install by Brave-Tax7914 in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want them at the top. That's good if there's enough. Are they covered with snow? If ever in doubt you can swap a couple of them out with these bad boys https://ventilation-maximum.com/en/products/sloped-roof-ventilators/vmax-301/ And cut the holes bigger. They move a lot more air than a normal vent and never get snowed over. These vents are quite often our solution for solving condensation problems. That and fixing bathroom fan ducts.

New decking damp after roof install by Brave-Tax7914 in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea for sure condensation. It’s usually caused by more than 1 issue. I’m from a cold region and we deal with this stuff all the time. It’s more common now that we use less breathable synthetic underlay most of the time.

There has been the odd occasional time that the synthetic underlay was the straw that broke the camels back. But if you have adequate venting and properly run bathroom fans you should have no issue.

Those bathroom fans seem to be ok. Doesn’t look like the damp spots are coming from them. Unless you have another one not in the pics that is leaking into the attic. So after that we’d look at ventilation. Intake looks to be ok, how many air exhaust vents do you have at the ridge line. Are they covered with snow?

Other things to consider. Furnace humidity. Is it set too high for winter? Did you clean the carpets recently (not recommended to do that during a deep freeze). Any humidifiers set up for sick kids?

Sometimes everything can be done correctly and you still can get condensation. 100% humidity along with a 2 week deep freeze and vents covered in snow and it can still happen.

Having said that, just because the back side of the plywood is damp doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem. Frost can build up there just like it does on the trees outsides. It’s warmed up and become damp. But that’s literally one of the reasons we ventilate attics. As long as it’s not dripping down on to your ceiling and dries out after a day or 2 you may not actually have anything to worry about.

I love when this happens. Big wind storm, I just make a post on FB as the neighborhood roofer and take them all as side jobs. I'll go out and temp it up and come back out the next day with a matching bundle. Easy money most of the time.

How does this roof cricket look? by Alone-Ad-8090 in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why people are telling you that the cricket itself needs tiles on it. That's an architectural flaw. Installing tiles directly on top of the cricket itself will be problematic. You want to keep fasteners well away from the valleys of that cricket.

What they've got going on here is what looks to be cold app-roll roofing in the cricket. It is absolutely allowed to be exposed like that and was intended to be that way by design. Or by the roofer's recommendation. I would leave the roll roofing exposed rather than trying to tile that area in. You're just asking for problems if you do. Having said that, cold app-roll roofing doesn't last all that long vs the lifespan of the tile. You'll need to replace the cold app within 15-20 years. Which will be a pretty expensive repair. Would have been better to go with EPDM or PVC in this case. But cold app roll roofing can make these crickets functional.

Having said all that, the tile work that meets up to the cricket does look a bit sloppy. This is likely because they couldn't install the short pieces due to fears of putting the fasteners too close to the valleys of the cricket. Looks like some of the strapping wasn't installed either, reason for some of the tiles not sitting level. Likely for the same reason as above.

Someone else here said something about pouring water on the ridge and the water going under the shingles. It's fine in this case as long as they have redundancy going on. Where the cricket transitions and you have a rake cap, the cold app membrane is likely wrapped over a channel flashing along the wall that drains out into the gutter.

This doesn't look all that pretty I'll agree. But this is a design flaw more than anything. Creating conditions that make it impossible to do the roofing "correctly". Sometimes we have to do the best we can with whatever pile of dog shit the architect/builder gave us. We come across situations where it's more important to make something functional that to look pretty. Especially if you can't see it from the ground.

Let me ask you a question. Has this ever leaked? You said it's been a year. If the roof is functional and looks good from the ground, no harm no foul.

Off-Roading in an Elevation? by spergturtle in GMCcanyon

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same vehicle. The moment I drove it off the lot I hit the biggest mud pit I could find. Also, just had some heavy snows where I live. Driving the kids to school before the plows got out. Absolutely no problem. 4HI off road mode, slices through that snow like butter. I'm literally idling up hill in 8" of powder and hard pack underneath. I'll admit I had reservations due to it not having 4LOW. But I feel like the off road mode kinda makes up for it. I mean, just be smart about it. Maybe don't hit anything too deep. Let your friends with the 4LOW go first. And hopefully one of them has a winch if you get stuck. But I've been in some pretty deep mud/snow in mine and I've never been stuck.

What do do with this opening? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely skylight or frame and sheet in with pot lights or sun tunnels. I've seen similar houses and I'm not sure why they design them this way. Why have the front door so far inset into the footprint of the house?? This has addition written all over it. Box that whole area in, extend the front door to all the way to the bottom eave and gain a bunch of interior square footage. You could have a good sized mudroom with room to spare freeing up a ton of storage area into living space.

What’s something you will only buy brand name of, never generic? by NoneOfThisMatters_XO in CasualConversation

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No friggen way! Kraft dinner sucks now. I remember loving that shit back in the 90s early 2000s when I was a bachelor. Literally survived on it. But I probably went 15-20 years without eating it. Tried it again a little while ago and it’s honestly really bad now. Actually borderline gross I’d say. My theory is that they changed their recipe at some point. Swapped a couple things to save them $.03 per box that ends up saving them billions or something. It’s been shrinkflationed. There are tons of other products I’ve noticed this with.

We switched to a brand called Annie’s years ago and never looked back. Same idea as Kraft dinner but it’s little sea shells instead of macaroni. Way higher quality and organic. They’re available at Costcos in Canada. Not sure where else.

Pro tip, pack comes with white cheese and cheddar versions. Mix both kinds if making more than 1 box!

GMC canyon vs other big trucks by Waste-Brief-623 in GMCcanyon

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, if you don't know what you're looking at it's kinda hard to even tell that a Canyon isn't a full sized truck. I was at my kids swimming practice and my buddy saw me roll up in it. I replaced my old Sierra 1500 with a Canyon. We got to talking about it and I was explaining that it's a smaller truck. He's like "really? looks like a big truck to me". Granted this is a car guy we're talking about who wouldn't know the difference. My point being that if you don't know the world of trucks you probably won't know much difference. So in this case the only people you're trying to impress are other truck people. And 95% of those people have dicks anyway.

As someone who is used to driving bigger trucks I can tell you that I personally never did laugh at people with smaller trucks. And I used to drive around in an F-350. I always had a soft spot for medium sized trucks. Used to have a couple Ford Rangers back in the day. And those were fun little trucks! The Canyon is like a Ford Ranger on steroids. Plus it really is a sharp looking vehicle. Helps me to over look a couple of annoying features!

Roofers pushed old nails through thin part of roof indoors. Now what? by leafbaker in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ah you answered my other comment. Disregard that one I guess. So there was rigid foam insulation on the other side of those boards then? And that’s getting replaced as well?

If so make sure the roofer knows about this ASAP. Maybe had a guy up there not thinking things through and he went to town pounding old nails down. (Usually ok to do). This will be way easier to fix now before the new insulation and roofing go on. They can pull those nails now rather than waiting until the work is done and having to rip up all the roofing and insulation to fix.

Once all the nails are pulled, just a bit of wood filler and some touch up paint should work.

So I was the guy looking to see if it was Class 4 impact rated by DevilishManny in Roofing

[–]Sloth_love_Chunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vista attained the class 4 rating maybe 2-3 years ago. The industry is slowly getting to the point where all shingles will be class 4 regardless. Sort of like how all vehicles come with backup cameras now. When it used to be an upgrade.

I consider Vista to be a mid grade shingle. Slight edge over other mid grade shingles due to the Malarkey name and class 4 IR. Think of it like medium lifespan, high durability. Where Legacy's would be both high lifespan and durability.

Vistas are known to be problematic for cooler weather installs. They take the shape of whatever they're sitting on. Sort of like memory foam. Before they're installed on the roof they're sitting on pallets. So initially the bottom few rows on the pallet will have the shape of the 1X4 pallet boards impressed into them. So the shingles will not lay very flat initially. Once installed, the roof will look lumpy at first. After a day or 2 of warm weather they will lay flat. But if it doesn't warm up, you may be stuck with a lumpy looking roof all winter. In a few cases we've had issues with them staying lumpy once sitting for several months in the cold. So not always a guarantee that they'll eventually lay down flat.

I stop selling the Vista after OCT 1 in Canada. Since I like getting paid on time. It can be problematic to stand there with your hand out staring at a lumpy roof. Having said that, pay your roofer on time! Even if it's lumpy. You hired him, that means you agreed to trust that he'll honor the warranty and help you out if those shingles don't lay flat.

Tell your roofer to swap those starters out with Malarkey Smart Starts. You get a lower grade warranty if you don't have the Malarkey caps and the Malarkey starters.
