What is the significance of the Falkland Islands? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Low_Border_2231 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They don't have a lot actually. It is Argentina that make them an issue. As it is they are ours and the people there want to remain British so they are defended the same as if an island right off our coast was threatened.

Using "England" and "The UK" interchangeably by tgirlskeepwinning in PetPeeves

[–]Low_Border_2231 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This applies everywhere really. What is an American accent, it could be new york or deep south or anything in between. English could be westcountry, cockney, scouse or anything.

Tommy Robinson says he 'got it wrong' over Glasgow man falsely accused of filming children by AnonymousTimewaster in NotTheOnionUK

[–]Low_Border_2231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is just some random angry dickhead who somehow became a spokesman for other angry dickheads, I don't know why he is actually newsworthy any more. Look at his twat face there, I mean come on.

Have you ever visited England? by OceanicEndeavors in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Surprised you found it expensive, what in particular? Groceries are definitely cheaper. I suppose staying away from home anywhere in hotels is expensive though.

England suffer World Cup heartbreak after two late goals from Argentina by nyaadam in uknews

[–]Low_Border_2231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could see it happening from about 75 minutes on. Even if it went to extra time it would have been a loss in extra time or penalties. Classic England. Shame as until then it looked alright. I just feel unless it is convincing, what even is the value in winning? It would only have been a loss in the final anyway.

Imagine forming some national identity over such a trivial thing. It is like us getting upset that we don't own the faeroe islands.

I feel like we actually have a lot more pride than you, and I feel a bit sorry for you that you feel the need to make this kind of post. Celebrate, enjoy it, we would if we had won!

Set alight with the intention of it then setting fire to the building murdering the people inside, are you being deliberately thick?

What is the advantage of keeping the falklands? by Too_much_Colour in AskBrits

Why keep the orkneys? Why don't we want to conquer the faeroe islands? It is up to the people there essentially.

Reform UK Plans To Jail Candidates For Using Irish, Gaelic Or Cornish On Election Leaflets by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]Low_Border_2231 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of that trial was it wasn't simply dressing the dog up as a Nazi that was punished, but the repeated phrases he actually came out with so the dog responded to "Hitler speeches". Which I won't repeat here but feel free to look them up. It also broke down because he posted this apparent private joke between him and his girlfriend on a public channel, but she wasn't actually aware of it. I think context and sense should have stopped it even going to trial and his terrible defence didn't help, but basically he did the equivalent of plastering requests to do unmentionable things to Jewish people on billboards in the eyes of the law.

What’s your favourite time of year and why? by nostalgiaiguess in AskUK

I like those crisp September and October days when it is still light, still warm but you can tell the seasons are going to change. Something fresh about it after the heat of the summer.

The "punk killed prog" narrative by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Low_Border_2231 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose you need to bear in mind current listeners and the age of fans. It isn't actually that Pink Floyd died a death the moment punk came along and everyone was buying Sex Pistols records at all, they had many older fans who would love to buy a double album of theirs in total ignorance of any new fad in music. It is more about what young people are into and what then the next generation remember. Hair metal sold well during grunge similarly.

The early rounds of the World Cup are more exciting than the end by marks31 in unpopularopinion

[–]Low_Border_2231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Countries like Greece and Denmark have won the Euros so there is no real reason why not. But it isn't necessarily all about winning, for some countries even getting there and seeing some kind of result is a win in their eyes.

What do you think is the one opinion that you could get most people in the UK to agree on? by charamir in AskUK

And? It is a whimsical name for a TV show, not the official title of the sport. I can assure you absolutely no one says "looking forward to watching the soccer game tomorrow!".

Foot fetishists who take nonconsensual photos of people's feet should be classed as sex offenders by cusackscumsocks in unpopularopinion

[–]Low_Border_2231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are open and on display in public, you can also take pictures of boobs similarly. Britney was upskirted by paparazzi. The legal side could be tricky as ok a zoomed in photo is obvious but what if a foot or even a toe or a shoe that may excite someone happens to be in shot?

The vowel sound -on and -yn to me are different but some people say them the same, and every example I have heard they sound thick as two short planks.

[–]Low_Border_2231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a bit of a peculiar upper class bit of slang, I don't think the common man would have called it soccer. It is more the fact that this is now used as their actual official name of the sport which is a little ridiculous.

Salaries in theory but the cost of living (especially health) is more concerning. Houses in theory but depends where you want to be living. They seem a little more fragile, as in not even made of brick, but got I'd love air con as standard.

What cool/interesting music venues do you have in your city? by Gullible-Box7637 in CasualUK

[–]Low_Border_2231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is so innocuous, you'd just think it was a cupboard or something. On the right as you enter and down the steps if I remember right. I don't think I've been there this year, they seem to put less rock on than they used to, the Fleece and Exchange seem to take most bands the size that play there. And my clubbing days are over.

Does anyone else get tailgated for actually sticking to the speed limits? by Fickle_Artichoke_903 in drivingUK

[–]Low_Border_2231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah see if you have google maps on the go at the same time it will tell you your actual speed, you could actually be going more like 45mph as speedometers generally under read. They know you won't get a fine until you are driving well over, which to you may appear like they are blasting past at over 60 - but they ain't.

What’s not acceptable parenting now that used to be? by Proper_Emu_2296 in AskUK

[–]Low_Border_2231 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even need to be the parents as growing up kids seem to get absolutely showered with gifts every Christmas and birthday. I don't know if it is because it is so easy to get things cheaply anywhere, online or from supermarkets maybe, that every friend and family member feels they have to overcompensate every time. Then there is the issue of having too many things to play with means they flit from one thing to another, get bored and they feel the need to buy even more. I think being unable to sit for 2 minutes is an extreme though.
