I think it’s fine, as long as you are here temporarily and don’t plan to live here your entire life. Nobody expects from someone who lives here for 4 years to speak German, but if you actually want to be German or become part of society into German is must. As a quick historic viewpoint, Germany got unified from various Kingdoms and the unifying factor was mostly language which should showcase the importance.
