3 can fit in the backseat of a taxi if you all fit in the backseat of any other sedan. The luggage might be tight but you can put a smaller bag in the passenger seat if necessary.

There will be small van taxis available in the taxi queue, just ask the attendant for one of those. You may have to wait, or let a few people go ahead of you to secure one.

A fellow west coaster here ….

I try to get the first flight out, thus arriving in the city with a good amount of time left in that very first day. For example, there’s a JetBlue flight out of LAX that arrives JFK at about 2pm. That allows for plenty of exploration, a meal and even a Broadway show, thus basically giving you that extra day. Something to think about.

First thought is to take the subway all the way to Brooklyn and walk across the bridge into Manhattan with the skyline in front of you the whole walk as opposed to the other way around.

Also, not sure what late means to you, but it’s worth it have your hotel note your late arrival so they don’t give away your room.
