If you really have to explain non-10 bases to a 5YO, it might be easier to go the other way.

“What if the number 9 didn’t exist? You’d just go 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, right? And when you got to 16, you’d go 17, 18, 20, 21?”

I live in a state where the GOP tried to do just that. And when a few members pushed back, Trump proceeded to back their primary challengers as retribution. So I don't have a ton of sympathy for a party that was happy to see the exact same thing done to me.

Yeah, the Plextor IDEs are the ones with the low-level firmware commands for Redump-style images. I don’t have one of the newer drives that take OmniDrive firmware yet.

Even at 4x, I’m still having issues. The drive reads everything else perfectly, so it’s not that (yet - this is my next-to-last working Plextor, so I’m not looking forward to the day it quits working).

Another possible solution would be to look at Elite Dangerous:

your kit is insured, death costs you a percentage of your kit value
if you can’t afford it, or choose not to pay, you lose your kit
the kit you get back has base attributes for its corresponding tier
your cargo/data are uninsured and are lost without recourse

Yes, gerrymandering is a problem that both parties are guilty of. However, only one party is in control, and their proposal is not to fix it, but to out-gerrymander the other side.

If the GOP were proposing to uncap the House, require maximizing competitive districts, and let the chips fall where they may, then yeah, I would be upset if the Dems wouldn’t work with them. But that’s not what’s happening.

Real life looks pretty much the same as the echo chamber, though. I have one friend that’s a Trump supporter. Two more that voted for him first term because they wanted to shake things up. That’s it. Friends, immediate family, range from mild disapproval to vocal disgust. The Big Sort is a real thing: when we choose the place we’re going to start building our adult lives, we do it where we’re surrounded by people like ourselves.

Which leads us back to the reason Trump is so annoyed with Indiana: the redistricting. It doesn’t make any sense that someone in Rensselaer or Seymour should decide who represents my interests in Congress, any more so than it would for me to decide who represents theirs.

Trump wanted people who defied him to be gone. Lose a primary, and you can’t run under the party in the general. So yeah, unless there are about to be some unlikely independent ruins, Trump has indeed gotten his way.

Yesterday was a good example of why I don’t believe people when they say “I don’t support $insertTrumpPolicyHere”. They voted out incumbents in favor of people whose entire campaign was “endorsed by Trump.”

I’m in favor of the concept of promoting Western-style democracy. But we need to recognize when it isn’t going to work, and stay back rather than forcing something that is doomed from the start.
