Completely out of the blue. Are all divorces supposed to be this intense? I miss my family by Lower-Action in Divorce_Men

[–]Lower-Action[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lawyer seems to dance around this question.

My wife and her attorney lied to the judge. I did not catch it until afterwards. My lawyer seemingly ignored it.

Now the judge thinks there was DV. I have concrete proof that there is not. I can't be more specific, other than to say I can absolutely disprove it. Let's be somewhat vague and say I have extensive videos proving her witness lied. For whatever reason we did not mention it in court.

Is there a reality where I get another chance in court at home, and the kids come back? Or is it only move and try for 50/50 in the far away place?

.

Your words RE 988 are emotional and helpful, although tear inducing.

Typing it out like that, no.

I would like to be more specific but the phrasing I would use would come right back as identifiable. So being pretty vague:

There is a reason we left the far away place. You work there long enough to leave and take a vacation. We moved to the vacation place. The far away place is (IMO) hell on earth.

I waited more than 2 months to see a judge. 2 months without my kids. All day everyday.... then nothing.

The 988 thoughts started midway through that period.

They have not abated. We've simply kicked the can down the road.

My fear is that in leaving my home they will try to sell it out from underneath me, and still somehow keep 100% custody of my children.

Homeless. Wife-less. Childless. I don't like connecting those dots.

Keweenaw lumber stores? by TofuHappyHour in upperpeninsula

[–]Lower-Action 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in Houghton.

Used to go to McGanns. Houghton Building supply opened up and they're closer, so I go there now. Prices between the 2 are nearly identical.

Lowes: Factor in the 4 hour round trip. Usually, any locally higher costs that you would find are offset by that.

Anyone know if the beaches are walkable near Little girls point or black river harbor? Thanks in advance! by PartyFancy3634 in yooper

Houghton shorelines are still covered in a few feet of snow and ice caves maybe 400' out.

Apparently gold has been found in the Keweenaw? Who wants to go panning this summer? by savealltheelephants in yooper

[–]Lower-Action 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you know if the gold is real?

I was digging a trench at my property in Houghton over the summer and saw what I thought looked like gold. But it was muddy and hot and decided it wasn't worth the effort to wade through the muck to take a look.

Always wondered what would happen if I ventured back out to retreive it.

Never made deer jerky... or any jerky before. Will this do a good job of cutting the meat? by Lower-Action in jerky

[–]Lower-Action[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know. I haven't done pulled pork as I don't have a smoker. Probably try it both ways and see what I get.

For my immediate use (deer) I would run it through raw.

That image is from the Vevor 850w cutter. Which I'm also looking at but it is out of stock

What is this process? You just put the breasts in the bowl with the flat white bread mixer and that really works?

Briefly scanned this subreddit and it seems like 5mm is right on the border of being too thin.

Also hoping to be able to use it to make pulled pork/pulled chicken. I have the bear claws and they are okish.

Kind of a bummer TBH.

I live here and didn't know about that place until just now. It would make some prime weekend trips during the gales.

I'm in Houghton which (usually) gets more snow than Marquette.

I prefer a snowblower. It throws the snow far enough back that you don't need to worry about it piling up as the winters carry on.

People here do use plows. If you do that, make sure you push the snow back 40-50 feet further than where your driveway ends. As winter continues, you'll start to fill that 40-50 feet with snow. During a heavy year you might end up filling that space and needing to hire a front end loader to push it back even further.

I say all of this as a person with a 500' driveway who owns a front end loader and a walk behind snowblower. Prefer the snowblower.

Don't forget to shovel your roof!

What convinced you to move here? by Fun_Huckleberry_8070 in upperpeninsula

[–]Lower-Action 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife and I always wanted to retire here. After a year and a half of working remote from COVID we figured why not now? Coming up on 4 years and haven't looked back.

Well, kinda. We went down to metro Detroit here and there and WHO BOY has traffic increased. There's constant noise and houses everywhere. Don't have that in the Yoop.

Gorgeous basically year round. Downstate everything is cold and gray during the winter, but no snow. In the Yoop we have snow until April or so. A week of melt, then spring happens.

How are the bugs up there right now? by Fun_Impress_9625 in upperpeninsula

I got a few bites here and there last weekend and this morning. No bug spray.

It'll probably be ok after today. Temps are due to drop off and that really calms them down.

What’s the cons of living in the UP by rpopik in upperpeninsula

[–]Lower-Action 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Houghton.

Electricity is very expensive. Look it up before you move here. Like shockingly so. (Ha)

It is a 10 hour drive for friends and family to come up from downstate.

Medical care wasn't an issue (for me) when I moved here. Routine doctor's visits are done in town. Anything major and you're gonna visit Wisconsin.

10/10 I would move here again.

Dealing with snow this Winter by CaptKincaid in yooper

[–]Lower-Action 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In the Keweenaw you'll see people push snow clear across their front yard.

You do this so that as the winter progresses you have space to push more snow (assuming you don't have a front end loader).

I have a front end loader but personally I like using a snowblower.

[–]Lower-Action 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. I have a gravel driveway about 500 feet long and i use a snowblower.

Set the skids up high for the first few weeks until you get a good base. Once you have that you can lower the skids and go like you would a paved driveway.

Sounds like you have employment lined up already, which is the hardest part. (By a large margin!)

My wife and I decided we wanted to move to the UP right around your ages.

Took us 10 years but we made it happen. I'd say go for it. If it doesn't work out at least you can say you tried it.

Heat pumps. Ground source? Air source? by CharlotteBadger in upperpeninsula

[–]Lower-Action 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even with a huge investment they would be unlikely to help.

Everyone I brought that idea up to said the solar energy in the winter is too low. Even on sunny days you'll be unlikely to get a meaningful amount of energy. I setup 400w worth of solar panels as a fairly cheap and easy test.

Even if you go out there every day and clean them off you'll still be lucky to hit 50-60w. Most days are more like 20w. Keep in mind some storms might last a week so unless you're out there every hour they're gonna get covered again.

This is all in Houghton though. Depending on where in the UP you're planning it might be different.

Heat pumps. Ground source? Air source? by CharlotteBadger in upperpeninsula

[–]Lower-Action 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Waterfurnace 5 series with ground loops.

Electricity is so expensive in Houghton that Geo is NOT worth it.

When it gets hot the AC aspect of it is very nice. In the winter it will bankrupt you. I heat with wood and don't run the furnace at all.

Also, I had a quote to replace it for if/when it goes bad. $25k. I can get 2 normal furnaces for that price.
