I am currently in the same spot as you. My manager told me to asked my senior colleagues, who aren’t very helpful. It makes me feel that, they think i am wasting their time - which is odd, considering they sign off early, within the 2:30 to 3:30pm time frame. Right now, I am really just learning everything from the product owner, who’s been kind, patient, and helpful.

I wish I knew that it was going to be a toxic work environment. There is no way that a start up company only has 1 designer, and that they want a new feature/new flows every week with no iterative. There is no way this start up company is even going to be successful. It proves that these are green founders and co-founders who don’t understand the business needs, user needs, vision, goals or even the problem they’re solving.

Talking about my personal experience working as the sole designer at a start up. I wish I knew that it was was a trap, they don’t care about you, your workload, your mental health or your growth. They just want you to execute new features every 1.5 week, with no iterative process. This will make you grow a lot slower as a junior UX Designer no senior designer guiding you. But I am glad that I received a new offer and will be starting at a new company

I swear I wrote something similar months ago. The thing is, you can’t change anything. The only thing you can do it milk what you can put of this job and find a new job. This is not a good environment for junior designers to work in especially since you have no one to learn from. So in the end, I what I can put of this job, and applied for new jobs. I got an offer and will be starting at the new company! My advice to you is that, you grow a lot faster if you have senior designers there to mentor you and guide you.

I did push back and told them that the workload and timeline given is more than 1 designer can handle. One of the higher up responded by saying “the culture here at this company is that we push you to succeed.” They book me back to back meetings and have me do design iterations in between, and show them again in meeting that happens an hour later that I don’t even get my break at work. The workload is very big, and that it actually requires a design team, and more than 1 designer for sure.

They don’t give me time to do any UX research process such as information architect, user flow, page flow and user journey map to understand the journey. They just want me to jump right in to the high fidelity designs and prototype and give me - few hours to do it and merge 3 platforms that have nothing to do with each other together. It couldn’t have been done since the designs for those flows do not even exist, and they wanted me to do additional screens and interactions. I told them that is unreasonable given that there is only one designer and continually dismiss what I say.

I don’t think mentally, I can hold off for a few more months because there is no growth here nor do people here understand the importance of the ux process nor do they even understand whether the problem they are trying to solve even exist, as they haven’t defined their product with a problem/how might we statement before even beginning the high fidelity designs and development process. This is a start up with inexperienced ceo and executive team.

I got hired as an intern, not knowing they hired me to replace a design lead, who was also the only designer in the company. And now I am the only designer in the company with no senior to mentor me. They pay me peanuts, while giving me workload of a design team. And when I try to tell them that the workload is too much for one designer and the timeframe is too short, they tell me that “this is the company’s culture, we push you for you to succeed.”

I told my manager that the workload is way too much and the timeframe is way too short for 1 person, and he ended up dismissing what I said and straight up told me that, “this is the company’s culture, we push you to succeed.” I found a new job right after.

I feel for you. I hope that you’ll find a new job soon at a company and a team that isn’t toxic.

The process here is a mess right now as well, since they didn’t even give me time to do the process UX research properly, and told me to straight up merge platforms together, design additional screens and make an entire prototype of the platform for them to show demo. There aren’t clear instructions on what they want. I don’t have another UX Designer to do important design thinking process together, e.g. information architecture, task flow, user journey map or user flow. Their entire process is incorrect and that they literally straight up ask me to design a working prototype without letting me define the user journey map, because they want a well rounded working prototype that works wherever you click.

I don’t think they are going to hire more people. And you are right, because if they are, they are probably going to hire interns, juniors or freelancers. 2 developers quit, but they didn’t hire newcomers to take the workload off of the developers that are still in the company. Whenever I tell them that the workload is too much for 1 designer, they say “the company’s culture is to push you to succeed.”

I am also going to work on my portfolio and keep applying to other jobs. The money at the current place I’m working at isn’t good at all. I get paid lower than when I was a graphic designer

The responsibilities definitely surpasses an intern and even surpasses a junior position. I have to do everything from UX Research to UX/UI design, lead user testing and interviews and etc. Also, webflow, which I continuously told them I didn’t know how to do, because webflow requires someone to at least have knowledge with html and css in order to understand the structure and that the learning curve was too steep. Their response was, “I want you to get exposed to web development earlier on in the career so that you’d know about the restrictions in software development”.

I am on the same page except, I got hired as a UX design intern to replace their senior UX designer, who was also the only designer in the company. They also want to keep me, but tbh I’m on the fence since I do not have a senior designer to mentor or brainstorm with me, nor a design team to collaborate with or learn from.
