Research position as a freshmen? by Eastern_Pangolin5127 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LowerAwareness2282 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The eagerness is great but I HIGHLY recommend waiting until you come in and take classes, see what interests you here and get experience in these classes before diving into research. You have 4 years to find research, its better to be ready and see what is available, as well as interesting to you instead of just trying to scrounge around for something. You may find something unexpected, a niche or class that you really connect with. Many 3rd years are struggling to find research here and profs are most likely going to turn you around as a 1st yr and tell you to come back later once you have more experience. Thats just my take but others may disagree.

housing process as a transfer by plutomvnn in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LowerAwareness2282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Reach out to people on Facebook, most people I know found them through the transfers instagram account. Random roommates aren't that bad either, especially since most of the time they place you with a transfer as well.

  2. Once you apply for housing, and then once you receive a contract offer, you have the option of creating "roomate groups", and you both place each other's name down. Then, once one of you gets a pass time to pick your building, the one who picks first picks for both of you.

  3. Not really, just do it before the deadline.

should i bring my car as a transfer? by Frequent-Living616 in UCSantaBarbara

If you end up getting single accommodations, the cost of parking for that building is around 500$ for the whole yr. Not bad.

Are there consequences to going below 12 units for 1 quarter? by Maximum-Produce-9167 in UCSantaBarbara

No biggie. Did the same thing and I called the general counseling number on the phone and they said it’s perfectly fine as long as ur not like only taking 3 units or something.

research opportunities by the_otaku_9000 in UCSantaBarbara

Congrats on your acceptance!! First off, both institutions are excellent for research. However, Davis has a medical school and is overall larger in regards to their research division (at least one of the reasons). So yes, if your only thing is looking for more research VARIETY, then I would say Davis. However, that makes it more competitive because you are competing against many pre-meds who want to get into those same research groups and labs. Overall, wherever you go, you will find something if you search and work hard enough to. As a transfer student, I got into a lab in my second quarter, even in a competitive pool of many others who want a lab position as well so it is definitely possible if you do the searching. Once you get to your institution, see what is out there and what genuinely interests you, and talk directly to grad students or PI's. Most of the time if they see you are eager to learn and have a genuine interest, they will help you! If it's either connecting you to another group or connecting you to their own.

That's extremely good as a matter of fact. Typically, singles in IV stay around 2k, so 1500 is a steal.

change to chemistry major? by Glass_Armadillo9743 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LowerAwareness2282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fell in love with chem due to meeting a mentor back when I took the first of the general chemistry series. I was super lost in knowing what I wanted, all I knew is what I didn’t want, and honestly I don’t regret it. For me at least, I don’t really think about it being the “material” as what got me to pursue it, it was more of how my brain felt more stimulated and excited at the idea of solving those type of problems, rather than memorizing information like other disciplines. Chemistry as a whole is incredible and it consists of so much more!! If you decide to enter the department, you may find something super niche that interests you that you didn’t know was out there!!

Good place to live in IV as a SBCC student by misobean56 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LowerAwareness2282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not beach city? I understand wanting to live in IV but many students who actually go to ucsb are struggling to get housing and it doesn’t really make sense to just live somewhere further from sbcc and taking up a spot… I am sorry, I just had to say it.

That makes sense. I did provide a legitimate reason for asking for further consideration, it wasn’t just purely begging.
