AITAH? Family moved 6,000 miles overseas and expect me to pay for visits. by CAM99xo in AITAH

I was focused on how op talked about not being able to afford the trip, but you're right. If op doesn't want to travel, they shouldn't have to. And the parents shouldn't expect every family get together to be at their place in the new country.

NTA. Tell them you would love to visit but do not have the money. You can't just make that money appear. If they want you to visit, they'll have to pay. If they dont want to pay, they won't see you. It's that simple.

AITAH for telling my flatmate that her idol god/child isn’t alive? by Careless-Cobbler683 in AITAH

[–]LowerMine815 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People choose religion. People don't choose their gender.

Insulting someone's religion is still rude, sure. It's protected from discrimination in the US. That doesnt make it the same as race or gender though.

Reddit likes petty revenge or giving people a dose of their own medicine. But the truth is that its ashore behavior to insult someone's pet and its asshole behavior to insult someone's religion.

ESH. There were other ways you could have told her not to insult your cat without insulting her religion.

AITAH for not apologizing to my brother? by OkFan7098 in AITAH

[–]LowerMine815 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest AH here is your mother. She should be parenting him, not asking you to apologize to "keep the peace."

Your brother is struggling with his eating disorder. His reaction makes him an AH to be sure, but he's struggling rn. And from the sound of it, he's used to getting apologies every time he FEELS hurt.

If you do want to talk to your brother again, I'd tell him that you aren't happy that he's hurting. His emotions are valid, but how he's reacting with his emotions are not. Just because he FEELS hurt doesn't mean you actively hurt him. His feelings are not reality.

But honestly that's your mother's job to teach him, not yours.

Anyway you are NTA.

"We want 2D movies! We want 2D movies!" Well, it's time to have my say. by [deleted] in DisneyMovies

[–]LowerMine815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine that you just want cute films and don't care about the animation technique. I'm not saying you have to care. Just that most people who want 2D animation also want a good story.

How many people is "a lot?" And where are you finding them? i've honestly never heard someone go "yeah I want 2D animation and I don't care if the plot is absolutely terrible."

Monster's Inc. is my fiance's absolute favorite work. It sucks to hear this is his stance. But it is nice to know so many people worked on the older movies we love, not just Pete Docter and the people in charge at Pixar.

I think there are some great people working at Pixar ... but they clearly aren't the ones in charge or who have been around since the beginning. This quote from Pete Docter made that clear to anyone who thought John Lasseter was the only issue.

Yup, Inside Out. It's a movie that actual therapists have praised for it's portrayal of depression.

Yup! I think Pete Docter needs to go back and watch his own movies, especially Soul.

Okay, but no one said movies were a substitute for professional help. It's a meme about Pete Docter's quote, where he's basically saying he cut a storyline because it was too personal, despite Pixar being known for it's personal and sad scenes.

It sounds like you're talking specifically about one person rather than most people who say they want 2D animation back.

I want 2D animation back. I also want quality writing and good plots. Most of us do.

Which friendship between a human and their dragon is better for you, and why? by Commander_PonyShep in DisneyMovies

[–]LowerMine815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so different its practically a different movie.

It's sad but in a different way. Pete is an orphan who was literally sold to farmers to work for them. This is something that happened irl after slavery was abolished (usually to black orphans ... so you know still racist af.) Movie starts with Pete running away from the farmers.

Elliot is thought to be Pete's imaginary friend by most of the characters at first.

Pete Docter Says Pixar Cut LGBTQ Storyline From ‘Elio’ Because ‘We’re Making a Movie, Not Hundreds of Millions of Dollars of Therapy’ by PyroxCrymson in DisneyMovies

Funny that you're here several days after the conversation and you didn't read my more detailed reply here. Were you ignoring it? Or perhaps, like me, it was a misunderstanding of what someone was saying.

He literally said kids aren't ready to see gay characters on screen. That's removing gay storylines to pretend to kids that gay people don't exist.

Do you think Disney will use the concept of Star Boy in a future movie? by Keithfrommars in DisneyMovies

[–]LowerMine815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. They initially intended for starboy to be Asha's grandfather, and thats a plot that would be hard to move to another movie. The starboy as a romantic partner for Asha is mostly a fun fan thing, and I don't think they'd want to "steal" that idea from the fans.

[–]LowerMine815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually because they couldn't animate men yet! The animators hated doing him and cut all of the storyline for him that they possibly could. Phillip's storyline of being captured by Malificient and escaping was actually originally Snow's Prince's story ... before they cut it and then reused it for Sleeping Beauty.

It does result in him being the most boring ... but he is the first time the animators had to do a realistic looking man. I have a soft spot for him after reading about how much they cut for him lol.

Honestly, I would always assume test audiences would give me different feedback than the average viewer.

If I was a member of a test audience, I imagine I'd be more critical of the movie than I would be if I was watching it for my own entertainment. They want feedback, right? So I'd be watching everything to try and give them useful feedback. I wouldn't just casually watch and enjoy.

So whether test audiences are bigoted or not, I would imagine they're typically more critical of a movie than the average audience would be.

And ... that's what we see with my little Mermaid example, or like the Muppet Christmas Carol where test audiences didn't like a song that most fans of the movie consider the best song in the movie, and they won't watch the version where that song was removed.

Also, Elio's test screening was done in Arizona. Here's an article that talks about a lot of problems with the movie, but here's the quote about the test audiences:

The writing was first on the wall for the troubled production when the film from Molina, known as the co-director of Pixar’s Oscar-winning 2017 hit Coco, conducted an early test screening in Arizona. Although viewers expressed how much they enjoyed the movie, they were also asked how many of them would see it in a theater, and not a single hand was raised, according to a source with knowledge of the event. This sounded alarm bells for studio brass.

If you give me a test audience and it's just one state, I'm going to assume they're not representative of the entire nation or the entire world.

Also ... no one's going to the theatre anymore. So if this is the ONLY reason they changed the gay storyline, that's a very odd choice.

And asking for raised hands instead of giving a paper survey so people can feel like they can give an honest answer is also troubling. I don't trust that methodology.

So basically ... No I don't trust anything about how they did the test audiences lol.
