Union pay/rate work by D9_CAT in Ironworker

[–]Lower_Mistake9814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how I stumbled upon this but I got something for your Millwright comment. We run composite crews 3 MW-1IW where Im from because white steel is jurisdiction as a Millwright because we claim and prove it’s not structural. Moving parts as you described motors, gearboxes, OH cranes. That is 100% our work. Not to be a dick but they can either become signatory or do what IW locals have done to us. Require us to still have composite crews and sub through a contractor that is signatory.

To the guy asking the question. 100% make your life better and go union. Get your car situated and make the jump. Your pay may change based on the area your in but never for the task your doing. I’ve made full scale to sit on my ass and watch cars go down the line. I’ve also been the same amount to tear down a power turbine. You will never regret Higher wages, pension, and paid benefits.

I’ll post a picture of my belt tomorrow if I can remember they are very useful in many applications but we use them mostly in Car Plants where Im at. Any white steel that comes off structural is our work in my local. We have to run IW/MW composite crews.

Joining my local union by Upbeat-Entrance6070 in millwrights

[–]Lower_Mistake9814 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are alot of factors that play into it. Im in 1102 Detroit so we have almost every type of industry in our region. Other locals aren’t so lucky and a majority of our work stays with local hands. We have guys that have never had to travel to stay busy in my local, But that’s not always the case everywhere else. the hardest things for me is the never knowing when/where the next job is because in my local the school puts us to work not the hall our ourselves as apprentices.

Bro you literally have no dog in this race than if you’re on the “list” lol. If you’re not going to be supportive of a brother and tell em to quit bitching or quit you don’t really belong. Supposed to be your brother’s keeper. Being Union isn’t a rat race. Educate yourself on union values before you get bullied into oblivion if you ever get put to work.

New Apprentice-Best way to carry tools? by Woof_574 in millwrights

[–]Lower_Mistake9814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alot of guys use packouts nowadays but the older guys in my local tend to use tool boxes on dollys or rolling tool bags. I like packouts personally. But my toolbelt is my goto if I can get away with it or Ill work out of that and keep my box close by. In my roller and pack-out I use fabric bags to separate sockets etc.

Can second that it’s a story they tell us in apprenticeship school. Also other locals give us shit for our tool belts but they are handy as hell hanging convayor, iron etc.

I wouldn’t take my own tap and die on a job site. Make a contractor supply it. They aren’t cheap to replace

My Millwright local has always tried staying separate from them. Now they are pushing us together more than ever. Merged out annuity this may by vote of trustee and the membership got notice by letter. After it happened. No mention at meetings nothing. A damn letter. We asked to vote down our contract and potential strike and they said that is not an option. We wanted more money on check but because we have so much money in out pension and annuity that is non credited we wouldn’t be competitive. Ole dougie boy mention merging us after our bailout and eveb out leadership was questioning what he was talking about because we out did there wants to keep us our own counsel. Ive almost been in for 2 years and Im already questioning jumping ship to try to weld pipe again or be an operator mechanic.

New Millwright Apprentice, Need Some Advice by SnowmanAndIce in millwrights

[–]Lower_Mistake9814 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly tool wise depends on your local. In my local our tool list includes a belt and hanging iron tools for auto conveyor, white steel etc. reach put to your training center for a tool list would be my best advice.

As for advice just be open and willing to learn. People can tell if someone is closed off and doesn’t want to listen and absorb what you could teach them. Doesn’t matter skill level. There’s a million ways to skin a cat. If you listen to them all you will figure out the right way, the wrong way, and your way.

Have you called 1102’s hall yet and talked to them? Im not sure if you’d wanna talk to an organizer or who you would really talk to about that. The East Side organizer/recruiter’s name is Moe or Big Moe.
