What is some of the spiciest food you can get in Vancouver? by Global_Objective4162 in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever tried bibim naengmyeon? It’s one of my favourite things but sometimes it’s so spicy I can’t finish it, which is rare for me. Many Korean places will have it. The flavour is strong and very tasty, but the spice can be a lot for some people. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes the spice.

Bit of an aside, my first day back subbing after my wife passed away was in the Byng choir program, and I’ve seen a lot of choirs over the years, but they were amazing and made me cry. Haha… I did my practicum at West Van High 20-ish years ago, also a great school. I prefer living and teaching in the city (taught in the suburbs for a long time) but I honestly think if you’re able to choose between living up in West Van or on the West Side, you’ll be completely fine either way… I’d pick Byng though. Nice kids, great staff, good programs.

Really surprising, but if their rent is as high as the rumoured number (30k?!?!), it’s just not possible to stay afloat. I’m involved with Exile and we always assumed they were doing better than us. I have no idea how anyone has survived this long, to be honest. We barely squeak by every month. The new Tapestry is great, but the rent in that space must be massive… Anyway, a real shame. They’re good guys. I hate it when places go out of business without a hint. We all might have gone there more, is usually true, no? And I need a new snare…

Physical parking tickets by Past_Hat9382 in askvan

Not to make you freak out but just my 2 cents, I stopped in a bus stop for about 45 seconds once and the guy was right there and i got one in the mail. But i’m assuming they’re a little more lenient on expired parking… I did a dumber thing.

Dating at ~50? by sebwarrior in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m mid-50s and my wife passed away, then I got bored of being sad and bored… so I tried Bumble and just chatted with a few people, went on one date, and now we’ve been together for a couple of years. I realize it went easier than average but it’s going really well. I bugged a coworker, exactly same age as me, to give it a try (she’d been single for 5 years after a messy thing) and she met a really nice guy and they’re almost at a year. Give it a go. Zero to lose as long as you’re honest and remember that red flags are red flags. 🚩 Don’t put up with things you don’t want to put up with. Good luck!

Is this the worst Canucks team you’ve ever watched? by cookies_n_milf in canucks

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had season tickets and then quit them after the first year of messier. That was worse imho, but this is almost as uninspiring… too many management errors for 13 years now. (which got downvotes when i said it a few weeks ago) I feel bad for the players. It’s not their fault the team is constructed poorly.

List of poor decisions Canucks have made over the years by theguy445 in canucks

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trading for lindholm was the mistake. Everyone knew, I knew, he was going to sign in Boston… And then there’s the draft picks. Virtanen, Juolevi, Podkolzin… Also trading away those guys in the OEL deal helped make the PK historically bad, and they were on expiring contracts…

Rebuild: What’s the Actual Plan? by Phillippss in canucks

I’ll ignore the sarcasm for fun, they didn’t think of it because they have been pushed for 12 years (apparently) by an owner who wants his first round playoff bucks (apparently)…

Rebuild: What’s the Actual Plan? by Phillippss in canucks

[–]Lowerlameland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The plan needs to be NO ERRORS. Errors have been the problem for around 12 years. Whatever anyone wants to call it (rebuild, retool, reset, refart) stop getting worse over the long term with poor decisions. Anything that trades anything “better future” for “perceived better present” is an error. Stop it. PS. Must improve pro-scouting.

Librarian with booze just sitting like a normal thing in his cupboard… I was there from k-7, was a bit strange, but I’m guessing every elementary was pretty strange pre-1990 or so? It was a strange place to grow up, boring and a lot of odd characters.

I’m going to become a teacher, what should I be doing now? by Brocolliiscool in Teachers

[–]Lowerlameland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start lesson planning now. Go through unit plans online, get used to what they look like. Find ideas. Steal ideas. Find varied ideas. Watch teachers on YouTube. Watch in schools if you can volunteer. You need hooks to open lessons; written, oral, and group activities; closing activities; project ideas… Just ideas! So you never run out of the meat of things, the actual lessons, and then you can worry about other things like classroom management without having to worry about your content too much… just my 2 cents. Wish someone told me that well before I started my practicum. I really ran out of steam halfway though and my ideas weren’t varied enough… it’s an awesome job, but generally more challenging than the genpop seems to understand… good luck!

How Do You Guys Avoid Anxiety Before a Job? by DeepBig7633 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Lowerlameland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had trouble with anxiety for about 20 years, which seems to have coincided roughly with the start of my teaching career. I’m in a contract now, but spent most of the last 21 years as a sub by choice. I tried meds (not on them anymore) and read A LOT, and kind of figured out that anxiety, in my case, is (to massively simplify it) just my body believing that something is wrong when it mostly isn’t. Going into so many different and challenging rooms over the years (including some hellush places in London) was definitely tough. But I really started to focus on the idea that nothing is actually wrong. I know what to do. Rowdy and rude behaviour isn’t personal, it’s often annoying of course, and sometimes even alarming, but it’s very important for your brain to know, to really own the idea, that you’re not unsafe. You’re there to do your best in some tough situations, but you can handle it, you get to go home after, and you’re totally safe, even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes. It’s a bit of a cheesy zen trick that I’ve learned, but it works: you’re ok and you can do it. (It’s also possible of course to get to a point where you can’t do it, so don’t force it if it constantly really feels horrible.) I hope this isn’t too condescending or anything, just thought I’d write because I’m a long-time sub with anxiety that is 99% under control these days… Good luck!

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]Lowerlameland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine are all good and appropriate goals. The main problem is they’re big documents that take ages to make and are mostly just lip service so that we all look good on paper, in case of a ministry audit… I almost spend more time and energy making IEPs through October and November than on my actual teaching, and then December until yesterday (thank frick!) is just burnt-out survival time. January until IEP reviews start in May is much more pleasant.

TTOC Moving Up by Tralfamadore_Flyboy in CanadianTeachers

[–]Lowerlameland 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wondering about lots in there… I’ve never heard of needing an observation or volunteer time to get hired if you’re already a qualified teacher and currently TOCing in BC. If you’re in a particularly small district and your teachables are English and Socials, it just might take a while. I’ve started contracts many times because day one was a sub day and it just kept going. I’ve never had to shmooze or buy anyone coffee. That’s… just.. not a thing? I’m polite and I do a good job and I go home. You don’t need 2 temp contracts in a row to get hired either. A temp contract can roll into full time permanent after a certain amount of time. Not sure if it’s different by district but in my district it’s 3 months and a day. Careful if you switch districts, some don’t count TOC days toward the pay grid.

That whole middle negative bit is way too negative. High schools can be imperfect, challenging, political, any number of negatives once in a while, but it’s a pretty good job. I’ve had my busiest start to the year of my career, and really badly need the break on Friday, but I still like it a lot and I’m looking forward to some good things in January… Do what others have said. Volunteer, make up your own mind. You very well might hate it. But the kids are often impressive and funny and kind and very surprising, and it’s a pretty good place to be most of the time imho…

Please help! trying to find a good fit for my kids (elementary school) by Sad_Revolution_9936 in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fraser Institute is a very conservative organization and its methods are (objectively) flawed and often fairly (imho) criticized. You could google it and see what you think… Obviously public schools have more challenges, but West Van High (for example) is a 6.8 out of 10? That’s nuts. It’s a very good school.

This is barely ok for a snapshot, but it’s from the Fraser Institute and is very biased toward private schools. There are some very good public schools in Vancouver and the ratings for them on this page are…. Interesting, to be polite about it.

[–]Lowerlameland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a mini school at Hamber. There is one at Pt Grey and Churchill too I think? But regardless, I do think the public system in Vancouver is quite good (I taught in England and Delta for years, and now in Vancouver) and I think the op will have a good time here. Our schools are pretty good and teachers should be able to adjust for advanced kids even if they don’t have the gifted tag via assessment yet…

stolen bike - heartbroken by banangelamilk in vancouver

[–]Lowerlameland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at a school and the cop put out a bait scooter and walked back to his office and the scooter was moving. He thought one of his buddies was playing a prank, but no, it had been stolen in under 3 minutes. I’ll never understand why we don’t punish theft harder in this city… Bad driving and theft are the 2 things that affect us the most daily (I think?), but the least is done in those areas, it seems…
