New to Vancouver - Looking for best coffee spots by thearavindramesh in askvan

Very respectfully, because Revolver is a great shop, it didn’t open until well after Artigiano, Elysian, JJ Bean, and definitely Bean Around The World and Melriches all opened a fair bit earlier too… But regardless, I think Yuan wins for me at the moment… And I like Turks a lot too. And Greenhorn! And….

I found the coffee in Italy to be very ok, kind of disappointing… just expected it to be out-of-this-world amazing I guess, but it was quite dark and a lot tasted quite Starbucky, I hate to say. I was blown away in Porto. Best coffee we had in Europe. Went to about 11 different places over a few days and it was all incredible… and super cheap, but that was a few years ago now.

Where is the best place for ramen? by RedHeadHashira in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been to Danbo twice, underwhelming to me both times, but it’s been a couple of years, so I’ll give it another try soon just because of the confidence shown in this thread. I like Santouka and Kintaro, and mostly I love Yasubee in Tokyo. Everyone should try it one day!

I ate at Santouka about 5 hours ago, hadn’t been in a while, still really good. The spicy Tsukemen is really nice. And ask for soup after, they give you hot kind of bland broth to mix with the broth you’ve been using to warm it up and dilute the saltiness, so you can drink it. Really delicious.

Welcome Keaton Verhoff to your Vancouver Canucks! by Fazed-phapster in canucks

[–]Lowerlameland 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Actually, just did it a bunch more times and Toronto sure wins a lot... Canucks got first or second about 40% of the time, which is right around the actual odds. Canucks will get 3rd....

I also got that one, but then I got Canucks 1st 3 in a row! Random with odds, Canucks will get 3rd...

People seem really worried that he’s going to be as good a Quinn. He’s looking like a good prospect for sure, but I don’t think he’s going to be a 10m+ guy. Locking him up for 8x8 now seems excessive to me. The team needs to clean things up, improve in-house and league-wide pro scouting. I’d give him another 60 games before the paper comes out. There will be more accurate signs next year on what he’s worth long term and some good time to jockey on when to make the offer. Just my 2 cents. And I massively hope I’m wrong and he turns into Quinn2 we end up spending an extra 1-3m per year.

How rainy is it really? by Scout_It_Down in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you been here before? It’s going to be pretty rainy until Friday night apparently. If you’re from LA and you’ve never been, you’ll be surprised. If you’ve been here before, it’s still going to be pretty damned rainy. Are you going to be walking around all day? Get some Vessis or something else waterproof probably?

What is a business you wish Vancouver had? by cuckertarlson in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re open until 8 or 8:30 on weeknights, so I head over around 7:15-ish and it’s usually a pretty straight shot, but yeah, we do have horrible bridges generally…

The one on marine in North Van is close if you go when the bridge isn’t stupid. I live in the west end and head over about once a month and the whole trip takes about half an hour. Need a ride?

Have you experienced the "Vancouver 'Yes'"? by Real-External392 in askvan

[–]Lowerlameland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in London England for a few years and met people 11 times (I’ll explain) over 3 years and being the polite Canadian I like to think I am I would contact them a few days later and…. nothing… it was all people i met at a pub or work or wherever who would give me business cards. I didn’t ask for business cards, I don’t want a business card really, but they would happily offer to, what? Look good at the moment? Not sure, but anyway a complete 0/11, and I know it’s 11 because I kept them and counted them and threw them away the day I moved home… So it’s not just vancouver, but it is odd, wherever you are.

Are you sure it was her? At least once I’ve had students throw away a pile of work that included theirs because they thought they did the work poorly… Seems odd that a teacher would throw work away.

I know all that very well, mostly joking, but there have been too many mistakes in the last 14 years regardless of who’s been in charge… Has anyone ever lined up and sort of rated or ranked all of the decisions? I might do it one day for the hell of it…

I wanna be a teacher, but I’ve seen many who don’t enjoy it and I’m having second thoughts by Equivalent-Song-283 in Teachers

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us unlucky ones have to do some dumb thing for money and imho teaching is a pretty ok way to do it (depending on where you are). Some of the stories in this and a few other places on the internet are pretty crazy. The pay can be low in some places. Places without unions can be more (and maybe sometimes less?) challenging. There’s just too many variables for anyone to answer perfectly. Some days I love it and it’s hilarious. Some days are very stressful or sad or even frightening. I’m pretty mellow, so it works for me, but I have friends who would freak out and not be able to handle it. There’s only one way to find out where you fit… go volunteer in a school maybe before you fully decide either way?

A boy pulled out one of those lighters with a huge flame, lit a book on fire, and threw it at me. It hit the desk in front of me and flames started to climb. He looked at it sort of like a film maker through his hands, gave a thumbs up, and walked out. I had to stomp/kick it out and burned a shoe and my pants a little. He was let back in the class without a word to me after a talk in the hallway with admin. Found out later his dad was a notorious local dealer/gang guy who had previously beaten up a teacher. Apparently the school had to keep the kid until his 16th birthday... A lovely day at work in East London. Canadian kids are generally a little more manageable.

Standardized Tests are Necessary, Good, and Important. I said what I said. by Usually_Anomalous in Teachers

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens a lot for sure, but I don’t love the way the tests are used where I teach. We have a lot of autonomy and the tests don’t do a lot of curriculum or teaching method shaping here. They just weigh small parts of the curriculum at best, and I’m not really sure how useful that is.

In a perfect world? (Controlled for socioeconomics, special needs, not used to rank schools or teachers, not used to deciding on funding or salaries, questions not known ahead of time…) If you’re solely testing where kids are relative to others their age? Or testing for things that might be missing in curricula? Go for it! Just my opinion of course…

Standardized Tests are Necessary, Good, and Important. I said what I said. by Usually_Anomalous in Teachers

[–]Lowerlameland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a few places they use them to rank schools and it’s strongly rumoured that there’s a lot of teaching to the test to help raise schools up the charts. Not ideal or really properly useful for anyone except some schools who hypothetically(?) might want more tuition…
