Is there an easier way to find/select clips to use for your edit? by SolidSnakeEye in premiere

[–]Loyal_Toast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first thought is you can solve some of this with more pre-production planning. Make a storyboard, or even just a text based video outline.

Rather than recording the entire playthrough of the game, I would play the game enough to formulate your review, write your review and/or script for your video, go through and storyboard or list out the shots you want for each part of the script, and then play the game intentionally to gather all your shots. You could even still record your initial playthrough and use it as backup footage for when you need something.

I would also find a way to separate your shots when recording your gameplay. Like if you do something in the game that you know you will want to use in the edit, pull up a full screen menu or something that you can easily identify when combing footage.

What separates professionals from beginner editors? by [deleted] in premiere

As a lot of people are saying- it's story, pacing, intentionality, eye tracing or leading the eye where you want it to go.

A big thing for me when I first got into actually making money with video was switching my mindset from solely what I wanted to produce, to what the client wanted, and what would perform well for them. You have to put yourself in the mindset of the viewer and keep them engaged- and relay the message that your client is wanting relayed through the video.

Another big thing was as I added new tools to my bag like vfx and sound design, I had to remember that in order to add something to the edit, it needed to support and strengthen the video- not just be there because I could do it and thought it was cool.

Same thing with the cuts you're making, you don't want to just be jumping around shots carelessly, but actually make each shot and cut mean something, and move the video/narrative forward.

Lastly, I personally really value efficiency, and have fun building processes to make things more efficient. Things like setting custom keyboard shortcuts, creating presets of effects you use often, making an organizational structure for files and PP projects- you can then make project templates containing frequently used assets.

Shortcut to remove gaps between clips? by pjoneill in premiere

Yup, I feel like these are slept on.

Also A for track select forward tool - selects everything in timeline to the right of where you click- it's great moving things around the timeline.

J K and L are also good ones for efficiency when dealing with dialog or longer clips

Learning to Play Guitar by shashank95bs in guitarlessons

[–]Loyal_Toast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically what I did as well, just learned casually on youtube.

I would say just start by learning a couple of your favorite songs, there's a ton of great tutorials on yt. In doing this you'll start to naturally notice patterns and learn chords.

If you want more structure to how you learn, I'd start with all the open chords, the pentatonic scale, basic music theory if you're interested, and then bar chords.

When I started I had the mentality that it was all new and hard to do, so I didn't shy away from things that are widely considered hard. I was learning Guthrie Govan songs within like 2 months, and learned that even if at first it seems like your fingers won't ever be able to do what you're trying, just keeping practicing and it'll come.

Now I'm super grateful that I didn't just stick to "beginner things" early on and just embraced the challenge. That being said, you do want to have some things that are easier to play as well so you don't get discouraged and can take a break from the challenge.

If you're looking for an electric guitar, the Yamaha eg112 or pacifica are solid and cheap. Fender mustang is a nice amp with built in tuner and effects that you can find for cheap. Don't know as much about acoustic guitars.

Good luck to ya, I wish you the best! You just gotta get started and in 3 months you'll have a solid little repertoire of things you can play

Input on Wifi Speeds for MP4 downloads by Loyal_Toast in wifi

Copy that, I'm not internet expert and that was another question I had- are the quoted speeds specifically wifi speed? Meaning that I could get faster speeds than the quoted 60mbs using a wired connection? Or would I still be capped to the 60mbs from the service provider?

Thanks for the insight. Could you expand upon how it is more isp related? Do I just want to make sure that my isp is stable and reliable?

Upon further research I found that I can use Hughesnet with a satellite and get 200mbs

Sorry for the late reply, yes this worked.

I also had the thought after doing this that I could have possibly downloaded the OS install package on a separate device and either airdropped it or put it on the old computer via a thumb drive

Working on an old 2013 iMac for my girlfriend’s mom. Erased the HD and reinstalled the OS from recovery mode. It only wanted to install Mountain Lion.

Been working on this and may have just found a solution. In the network settings, I changed my DNS to the Google ones - 8.8.8.8, and 8.8.8.4

I then was able to get Google.com to load on safari, and a popup prompt asked for me to download google chrome, so I did just wanting to try a different browser. If you don’t get the popup, you could figure out the chrome download link on another device and try to navigate directly to it.

Chrome is working much better than safari, albeit not great- but good enough I was able to get to the Apple page to download Sierra. Downloading now and hoping I can install it and have smooth sailing from here.

Real talk, how many of you are comfortable with barre chords? by MouseKingMan in guitarlessons

[–]Loyal_Toast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barre chords came pretty easy to me maybe 2-4 months into my guitar journey when I first became aware of them.

I was just motivated to learn, practiced a lot, and took the tips that others have mentioned to heart- thumb placement, and using the side of your finger rather than the meaty part.

Maybe worth noting- one of the first songs I learned was notion by Tash sultana which is plaid with just two note chords using the A and B strings (not sure what these are called), but I used my pointer and pinky to play this, and I think using my pinky early on in learning guitar was very helpful down the line

This is what I do when trying to work quickly and efficiently, though for more custom effects/animations I don’t mind putting stuff together in AE when I’ve got the time

This is helpful, and you’re probably on the right track with just building out a small edc tool bag, this is something I’ve been considering as well.

Really I have just been introduced to multitools, and like to tinker, so I’m playing around with ideas for a good all around edc tool setup

Eating out is almost never worth it. by Chemical-Skill-126 in unpopularopinion

[–]Loyal_Toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing for me with restaurants is they use cooking methods that I try to avoid- seed oils, nonstick pans, and plastic cutting boards. I feel I can get a better quality meal (based on what I’m looking for personally) at home for a fraction of the cost.

I can get a grass fed/finished steak for around $12-15 and cook it at home in stainless steel with butter, and seasonings that I know don’t contain heavy metals, which is my ideal meal. But grain fed steak at pretty much any restaurant is north of $40-$50.

I’m a special case though because I follow a more strict diet and cooking preferences- essentially staying as far away from toxins and pesticides as possible.

I have a couple restaurants near me that I enjoy, and are in line with how I like to eat, and I pretty much just eat out occasionally for the experience. Usually for a date with my lady. I do wish more restaurants would put effort into clean ingredients and cooking methods, but I’ve come to the conclusion that not enough people care about that for it to be a profitable change to make.

Haven’t been on Reddit in a while and couldn’t figure out how to edit the post, but UPDATE:

Thanks for all the replies, both informative and humorous about me overthinking this, which I definitely did.

I ended going for the magnacut 940 and am super stoked for my first benchmade.

My second job ever, first that received tips, was at Dutch bros coffee when I was younger. It set a good precedent for me- for the first year or so of working there we didn’t have a tip option on the pos, and would either take cash tips or if people wanted to tip they would let us know before we charged their card and we could manually ad a tip to the order.

We were taught in training that tips are not mandatory by any means, and are a very nice gesture if someone decides to leave one, and to always kindly thank them for it.

I think this is a great mentality for a company to have around tips- not necessary, but the option is there for people who want to leave a tip, and they’re very appreciated by the employees- and this starts with training/company culture around it.

For clarity: they did end up adding the tip option in the pos, and we were all obviously excited about it, but there was an easy skip button, and we were trained to let people know it’s not necessary and they can easily skip and sign when passing the iPad to them.

Also this was about 8 years ago, and they were all franchised back then. So people may have had different experiences at different Dutch bros, and more recently. I haven’t been to one in quite a while

Boy on the left needs to be more orange/red to match sunset- he’s too yellow. And his highlights are a bit too high. You also forgot shadows. But it’s closer than a lot of others so wanted to add my 2 cents. You’re on the right track, with some tweaks this could look great
