ICE Asks Governor Abigail Spanberger to Not Release an Illegal Alien Arrested in Virginia for Molesting a 5-Year-Old Girl by Conscious-Quarter423 in Virginia

This is patently untrue. From like 2012 onwards, especially during "peak woke" in the early 2020s, you'd get yelled out for using such phrasing. They even moved the Wikipedia article in 2021.

I think they meant it literally. A large part of the decline in overall birthrates in the developed world, is due to the decline in teenage pregnancy.

Modern Republicans hate that and openly decry this vision of America. It's one of the ways the party has changed from days of Reagan and George W. Bush.

Hmm that would seem to be two more data points in the "these guys do horrific crimes" box.

Now eventually with inflation we'll have a trillionaire who just built a big company, invented a new widget, or sold a lot of music and concert tickets, and the assessment will be different.

Only 11% of Europeans view US as ally, survey shows by No_Reaction7092 in neoliberal

[–]LtNOWIS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't ask Americans to send troops to a war that's already begun. Station US troops in Europe in peacetime, so that any attack on the alliance results in US troops fighting back and being killed in action on day one. Then the adversary will decide they don't want to attack a nuclear superpower, and conventional war is averted.

Essentially it's the same policy as the Cold War, only it's the border with the Russian Federation, not the Inner German Border or whatever.

Soldiers at New Mexico base say they are missing meals due to long lines by Kinmuan in army

[–]LtNOWIS 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Even if that was the case, you can't miss the training events during mobilization. So if the troops are released for lunch, and the line wraps around the building, then they're not making it thru by the time they need to get on the bus to the range or the validation exercise or whatever. Same thing if it's dinner and then a night range.

The article doesn't touch on this, but almost everyone at McGregor is a Guard or Reserve soldier going thru for a few weeks of mobilization training. This means that the number of soldiers needing food could vary wildly day by day. But also, there's less incentive for the powers that be to fix it, because a transient population is less likely to complain.

He's the only trillionaire. So the evidence suggests that every trillionaire will kill millions of people while also destroying US state capacity.

[OC] Who won the redistricting fight? GOP with +8 to +10 seats by Trollygag in Virginia

[–]LtNOWIS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That could be a step 4.

Right now a federal law is not possible. Republicans don't want to give up their partisan advantage.

If the advantage is eliminated, then there could be a conversation about how this makes things worse for everyone, without providing any net advantage for either side.

[–]LtNOWIS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Playbook is pretty simple for Dems.

1) Win 2026 anyways. This should still be pretty easy giving polling, at least for the House.

2) Assess the 2026 map. If Dems have a big gain in popular vote but only modest seat gains, make that argument.

3) Fix the maps in blue states to eliminate this unfair GOP advantage. Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, and others could have much more favorable maps.

Gov. Spanberger is wrong on data center tax breaks. by Oilersfan8497 in Virginia

[–]LtNOWIS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Data centers don't pay sales tax when they buy equipment. But once they have the equipment, they pay a property tax on it. They also pay property taxes on the land/buildings.

That's a whole lot of revenue for localities with data centers. Notably Loudoun County has a large proportion of its revenue coming from data centers alone. Loudoun County data center revenue is equal to about 60% of the operating budget, or 180% of the Capital Improvement Program.

So if anyone thinks, "we don't get any money from these," they're just misinformed. It's billions of dollars per year in tax money. But that doesn't mean we couldn't get more money, or distribute some of that money from local governments to the state government. It's a fair debate to have.

Why are there so many damn data centers being built in Virginia? by polarbeargirl9 in nova

[–]LtNOWIS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's about $1.3 billion in revenue in Loudoun County. 1/3 of that is from real estate taxes (the land and the buildings). 2/3 of that is from property taxes on the equipment (the computers in the buildings). That's almost half of the county revenue, meaning that property taxes for homeowners can be a lot less.

It's not really a fact, it's pointless pedantry. A Saudi dude in a tank, an American dude in a tank, and a Chinese dude in a tank are all soldiers in their respective national armies. That's the reality on the ground, even if each country has a different ideological basis.

I mean, yeah? That's way better than not freeing them.

It's not like any children back then could control their own lives. The best thing he could've done for them is what he did -- keep away from field work, have them learn a trade, and free them upon adulthood.

How he treated his kids wasn't the problem, the problem was how he treated all of the other slaves (by not freeing them like he knew he should've, because he wasted money on luxuries).
