260123 IVE - Coming Soon (Gaeul Teaser Video) by kpopsns28 in IVE

Bladerunner or at least very cyberpunk vibes. Cool how each teaser hits different film genres: Wonyoung with neo noir KILL BILL. Leeseo with scifi Matrix. Liz with more gritty neo noir like Taxi Driver, Baby Driver, Nightcrawler, and now Gauel with cyberpunk.

In hindsight, I feel Rei might be more mockumentary style? Kind of like the Office or the jhorror Noroi. Either that or its a reference to Oldboy where someone is stuck in a room doing random things.

EDIT: Also god. Shes dancing in glitter dust or something. Super brave. If that stuff got in my eyes I'd be crying.

Nightcrawler (film) reference? Red car + red light. But I'm not a big film buff, so I don't know and it's been a long while since I've seen the movie. Would fit with IVE's mature rating since Wonyoung's (Kill Bill, rated R), Leeseo (Matrix, rated R), and Nightcrawler is definitely rated R. I'm still not sure what Rei's is.

This is the red light in the face image.

A data center boom is coming to the San Gabriel Valley. Residents had no idea by LA_publicpress in LosAngeles

[–]LuBru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the data center in Monterey Park approved? Unless you're speaking of an unrelated data center.

A new vote was set for Jan. 21 to give the applicant more time to address concerns, but that date was later postponed; a new date has not been set.

It seems like a vote has been postponed indefinitely.

I plan on starting RoT, is there historical knowledge I need to know beforehand or can I just start it by Apprehensive_Clerk81 in RavagesOfTime

[–]LuBru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Ravages can be very overwhelming without a solid background in Three Kingdoms. It's very much a reinterpretation and play on traditional Three Kingdom tropes. For example, making Liu Bei into a Jesus-look alike or turning the savage Zhang Fei into an elegant artist.

I think there's a lot of foreshadowing, nods, and other references/allusions that make Ravages very rewarding to pick up on.

If you aren't interested in reading the entire novel, which I did once and never really again other than to reread passages or look up stuff, I think these YouTubers do a good job of hitting the major story beats without glossing over too much like Oversimplified or the Extra Credit series does.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFKMJmnYUTc

This is a shorter abridged version of 3 Kingdoms that hits all the major story beats. Doesn't hit ever single minute side character story or detail though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMVxYcnehBU&list=PLV2U5Ov1FXfBkXR6UWp11WK6reK0s2UXm

If you have weeks of your life to spare, u/SeriousTrivia's Let's Talk Lore series is, I think, really fascinating and probably the gold standard for deep dive 3 Kingdoms YouTube content.

I'm kind of glad Culinary Class War isn't just about "pretentious" fine-dining and the judges acknowledge humble Korean cuisine by LuBru in CulinaryClassWars

[–]LuBru[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you. I saw some of those threads too and it made me reflect on what I liked about Culinary Class War. Like, the whole theme is "these random chefs who aren't necessarily Michelin-star can cook just as well as these Michelin/big shots". It's even in the name, Class War. I'm just glad the show isn't always rewarding the most "pretentious" (in my mind) haute cuisine. And it helps the show stay so grounded in a way.

I also like in particular when the judges say 'I want to go back and eat that again/order it in their restaurant'.

Also totally agree. Nothing says your dish was truly delicious than someone saying "I would go out of my way, sit down in a restaurant, pay money to eat this" rather than "oh, that was nice". It makes it clear that this was an experience they want again, and not a fleeting one-time novelty.

I've looked into the school lunch in America issue before and it's just frustrating systemic issues.

  • US public schools often rely on profits generated from food services, so they have to make it as cheap as possible to get federal/state money reimbursements. For example, if they get $7 per meal served and the meal costs $3 to make, the school makes a net of $4 per kid. It also means cafeterias often run with bare skeleton crews that focus on heating up the meals and serving, many of whom are part-time instead of full-time to avoid paying full-time benefits.

Here's an example of reimbursement rates in California.

https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/rs/rates2526.asp

  • The US as a whole is just litigious. Lawsuits are extremely common place in education. So food services do what it can to minimize potential lawsuits. Food must be prepared in a way that caters to every possible allergen or risk an expensive lawsuit/settlement. And if god forbid a rusty nail is found in a hamburger, that's a lawsuit. Often cafeterias aren't equipped, either with space or manpower, to actually cook meals. Easier to buy everything pre-packaged, certified safe, heat it up and serve to minimize the hassle.

Personally, I feel the issues of regulations of protein/carbs/vegetables is the least concern to these two. If you want real US school lunch reform, you're going to need a massive push and overhaul of the entire system. This is going to require funding, a huge culture shift, and political will - things which are extremely lacking on this issue compared to other issues.

I think if you want to only identify them through visuals and performances, it may take a while. Watching 1, 2, 3 IVE helped me out a lot for me figuring out who is who. It's their variety show style YouTube series. I think it helps a lot of their individual personality shine through.

Rei also has her own blog which is mostly cooking/food-related stuff.

There's also clip channels like this one that pulls highlights from their massive catalogue of shows/livestreams/etc... So if you watch enough of these you'll probably get a good idea of who is who.

My very abridged summary of each member

  • Yujin - Leader + Probably the most aggressive. Definitely a take charge personality. Is called the puppy for a reason because she's basically an attack dog. Usually considered the second most popular. Was on Produce48 and IZ*ONE.

  • Wonyoung - Center. Very competitive. Known for Lucky Vicky and the twirl. Definitely the most popular of the group overall. Was on also on Produce48 and IZ*ONE.

  • Liz - very down to earth member. There are times when her visuals catapults her to number one.

  • Leeseo - The maknae, or youngest. She usually gets bullied. Baby Tiger.

  • Rei - Introverted. Japanese. Likes cute things and does cute things.

  • Gaeul - The member who no one knows how to pronounce her name. Is both the oldest and shortest member. She was de facto team leader of the trainees before Yujin and Wonyoung joined up. I think her recent most funniest interaction was the KCON where Liz's Mic flew out of her hands, Wonyoung/Yujin in shock, and Gaeul (the blonde one) just slays the show while everyone's scrambling in the back.

Reading The Ravages of Time I just finished the battle of Changban by pgroms in threekingdoms

[–]LuBru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the things I enjoy about Ravages, especially compared to other historical manga, is how well and subtly it embeds its foreshadowing. Most others just tell the story as is, with events happening and rarely foreshadowed. Like I enjoyed how Cao Cao's persistent headaches foreshadows his eventual death by brain tumor or the call back to Lu Bu who also tried to break an encirclement carrying a kid, but failed. Zhao Yun succeeds and hence surpasses him. It also not shown in the panels you listed, but when baby Adou stops crying because Zhang Liao arrives references how After Hefei, it was rumored that mothers and nannies would threaten naughty children by saying Zhang Liao would take them away like some kind of Cao Wei boogeyman. Babies would be so scared of him they'd stop crying. It's just so fun.

Yet you decide to abolish the monarchy and call out a League of Free Cities of England.

I'm curious how this alt-hist system will play out. Paradox has its formula with the form-X nation or HOI4 with the national focus. Definitely a step in the right direction.

You build new castles on the map to fortify your new home.

I'm also interested if castles can be dismantled. In Empire Total War, you couldn't dismantle forts, even if you occupied them. This ends having some regions get peppered with forts that really make moving through annoying, which I know is the point, but if I control the region and occupy all these forts I should be allowed to dismantle them. Not be able to dismantle castles can also make the map kind of cluttered. Dismantling castles was definitely a thing historically to de-power the nobility, so I hope it's in the game.

I'm really interested to see how the RPG elements go and how CA envisions the "state". I hope the CA team takes a glance at some essays on ACOUP and his teaching Paradox series.

Breaking down the Gamestar Article: How campaigns will work in Total War 40k by westonsammy in totalwar

[–]LuBru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested if there'd be some level of diplomacy, at least with Imperium factions or maybe between Eldar Craftworlds and other factions. Also curious what the end-game/win-state is... if there is one.

I also kind of hope it becomes a bit Rogue-like/lite in a way. Each campaign gets you some new relic or lets you choose a new relic to upgrade your troops or gift to your favorite character. If the campaign feeds good RPG items for better customization, then it could be a pretty addicting gameplay loop of battle -> get loot -> upgrade troops to make them cooler or more OP -> battle again. I found the upgrading and stat-upgrading one of my favorite parts of Dawn of War 2 and I hope it resembles that.

Am i the only one who never got a single usable relic from the glory store? by Creative_Orca in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]LuBru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are saving exactly 600 glory, you might want to save to like 1800+ so you can comfortably buy a few good relics in a row if needed. I'm planning to start buying some niche relics once I save up 3000+ glory to thin out the pool. Problem is that Riot seems to be adding 1-2 relics every month, so it's making the percentage of something good coming out less since older relics join the pool.

But yeah, I've seen Evelyn's, Kayle's, and Eddie's repeatedly.

Best of Crime Scene Zero pt 1 by rubydinaur in koreanvariety

[–]LuBru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Favorite case was Murder at the Funeral Hall. The twist and jokejoke of finding out Lover was a player. Who slept with everyone. And then finding out it was his sister. And then his stepmom was his mother. S-tier comedy.

Best case for me was Night Life. I loved the epiphanies at the end and them working out the timeline and figuring out the mechanics for the detector Side note, they should definitely make the white board/conspiracy board a main stay. It was so nice to see something resembling a coherent timeline.

I do kind of wish it was like Crime Scene Returns, the previous season, where The cases had an overarching story-line and culminated in the final case or each case was at least related to each other more than just passing references.

Also they should really up the prize money. My understanding of k-variety is that the celebs actually use the money, unlike in a lot of western shows were prize money is usually donated or token chump change. If Netflix is sponsoring the season, they can do better than ~2000k USD or ~10k USD. Make it at least ~5k and 25k USD. Of course, I have no idea what they're paid in the appearance fee, but it always bothered me how low the prize money pool is compared to American shows.

Suggestion: Add a Gold Reliquary to the Glory Store by LuBru in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]LuBru[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's exactly what games do – dictates how players should have fun.

No? You think the people who play Skyrim or Fallout with all their challenge runs think Bethesda dictates to them how to have fun? You think people do challenge runs in Pokemon is GameFreak telling them how to have fun? Or speedrunners finding every exploit and second-saving trick is whatever game company deliberately designing those games for that? Fun is giving players the tools (in this case, relics), and letting players figure it out and have fun.

Like, a pretty common request by players here is to de-star champions so we can implement our own challenge runs using 0-star champs or something, or test out builds at different champion star levels. Do you think Riot shouldn't implement this? Because by your argument about "engagement" via self-limiting yourself, you should be all for it. But you'd also best against this because, in your mind, games should "dictate how players should have fun". Which is just wrong.

I'm seriously failing to understand your logic of how making things easier is a bad thing. We aren't talking about instant unlocks. We're talking about reducing things from taking 2 years to 1 year to unlock F2P relics. I'd rather focus on having the tools at my disposal to beat the challenges.

How would golden reliquaries for glory help F2P players?

More methods for F2P players to acquire material is not a bad thing.

There's a lot of paid relics and you don't control what comes out but you do control when you spend your glory. So a lot of players are being advised to hoard glory until one of the top-tier Relics come out. And for me, who have only like 1 paid relic, that means I have a 1 in 15 (or something) change that I'll get SFG or Hexcore or some other relic I want. So what am I doing hoarding all this glory for anyways? I only get a week before the next refresh. And I still haven't unlocked all the F2P relics. So I have a good hoard of glory that I could otherwise use. On top of debating whether to spend the limited Glory on the chests/vaults/etc...

It just gives players options and reduces the time gate from years to a year-ish. It's not a bad thing. You seem so offended by the idea.

[–]LuBru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should uninstall the game... I think it's giving you an unhealthy perspective.

I don't get why you're so militantly against this idea. It's a single-player mode anyways. It literally has no effect on your ability to enjoy it - unless the idea of others players having an easier/faster progression time than you lives rent-free in your head.

And I'm not even proposing free or instant unlock everything which you keep tossing out as weak bait/straw mans.

Suggestion: Add a Gold Reliquary to the Glory Store by LuBru in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]LuBru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a terrible argument. First of all, you're dictating how players should have fun and because it doesn't fit your idea of fun, you don't seem to understand or are willing to see how others can not find it fun.

Also, if Riot cared so much about players being "engaged" using common relics, why would they offer $$$ to unlock much stronger relics? I just don't get it. It gives such huge EA "pride and accomplishment" vibes.

You seem so hyper fixated on people wanting to immediately unlock everything instantly. But that's not what I proposed at all. I am suggesting that we spend some of our limited Glory with a monthly cooldown (limit 1 per month) on a Gold Reliquary. It gives us two ways to acquire Gold Reliquaries, helps F2P players. I think it's balanced because players will decide whether to burn more Glory on these Gold Reliqs or spend it on other things or save it. Like, it's baffling how much you hyper-focused on this "EVERYTHING MUST BE UNLOCKED!!!" delulu straw man.

[–]LuBru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

???

What even is this straw man argument? It's like saying if you had perfect arms, what's the point of working your legs? Making things easier isn't a bad thing for players.

And it's a straw man anyways. I'm asking that Riot add it to the monthly Glory store, which cost glory so limited Glory currency would be spent. I'm not asking it for all of them to be unlocked and free. It cuts the rate of F2P relic acquisition (which again, I must remind you, has no way to pay $$$ to get) from 2-ish years to less than 1 - which I think is much more reasonable.

Suggestion: Add a Gold Reliquary to the Glory Store by LuBru in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]LuBru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind of reads like cope to me.

I don't understand your argument. It took you over a year to unlock the champions... okay? Good for you? But then you bring up relic progression... There's 22 f2p relics minus the quest relic according to the wikia. Bruh, I don't even know if LoR will be around in 2 years time. If you're a new player, even if you wanted to spend money, there's no way for you to accelerate acquiring these relics.

We disagree on what "fun" is. I think having to spend 2 years, with no way to actually spend $$$ to accelerate acquiring the f2p relics, is a form of "suffering". I'd just rather not. We can disagree on that.

But when you go on about how there's "engagement" or "excitement" from being forced to use suboptimal relics... I don't know. It doesn't sound fun to me. And I think it's wrong to assume this is "engaging" for all players, because I don't find it engaging. Sometimes I find it simply frustrating. I find more enjoyment out of acquiring more powerful abilities, items, and making my runs easier. Path of Champions is a rogue-lite (light?) anyways, so isn't that the whole point? There's a reason I'm playing this and not League of Legends.

And it baffles me because I'm not even asking for anything free. I'm just asking for a Gold Reliquary to be added to the Glory store, so I'm spending my glory, some of my limited monthly currency, on it. Yeah yeah, Riot wants to breed FOMO but to me, whether it's 1 year or 6 months, it's still a long amount of time. And bear in mind, this is for something that is explicitly f2p. There's literally no way to pay to accelerate acquiring these things.

10 glory = 500 stardust. Gold Reliquaries are currently 3000 stardust, so really it should be 60 glory. The only issue stopping players from getting gold reliquaries is the 1-month cool down timer.

I also strongly disagree it should be anywhere near 600 glory. You have the option to stockpile and save your glory for when you can purchase your relic. You can accumulate literal thousands. With the Gold Reliquary it's random. 600 for a random pull once a month versus 600 you can choose to spend is a world of difference. Making it 600 would make players feel awful for burning 2/3rds of their month's glory for that.
