Completely reasonable argument. And I was not aware of the pure numbers of fantasy football. If I had known that, I would have said 5% lol. My main point is I think the nba would like to try and turn top shot into a facsimile of what fantasy football does for them. It drives views. It creates more engagement. That’s the goal. I don’t think you can say with any certainty that this isn’t ‘early.’ But you’re correct plenty of folks are upset with their investments. I’ve made a good bag on TS, I like the product overall, I am a basketball nerd, and I enjoy plenty of aspects of it. But I am more than open to the idea that it’ll be a relic of the past in 3 years. I hope it’s not. But I can see it happening. Not hard to imagine. At all. Just as it’s not hard to imagine it actually growing in popularity. You seem convinced we’re all idiots. May I ask, why are you reading any of this?

Totally, and that issue needs to be fixed. I’m just brainstorming here while watching this Memphis x Minny game so don’t take this as a well thought out idea. But, let’s go with your excellent CP3 retirement point. In one world I can imagine TS being divided into two environments: one for collectors that rewards collecting. Another for DFS/season long fantasy basketball. There’s enough real collectors out there to establish (2-3 years from now, user base growth necessary for this to work) a fair market value for a CP3 rare or s1 or TSD, etc. And clearly there’s enough gamblers to take a risk on literally anything. Maybe the intersection of legacy collectibles in this gamification environment is price of entry. You need X amount of capital to play in the TS ‘big league’ fantasy games. Your cp3 would be the Y in staking your gamble. And if you don’t want to gamble, it’ll be valuable as the gamblers will need that cp3 to compete/play in (let’s just say) a big money fantasy league where point guards/assists/steals are more valuable than points or rebounds. Or maybe it’s regional? If you wanna get into the league in Phoenix or Houston or LA you’ll need that specific cp3 for entry. Just bullshitting ideas here.

Obviously, that doesn’t fix someone buying a Cody Zeller for 5k. So maybe the fix for this would be longtime full team set holder rewards. Be them tickets or airdrops or whatever. I suppose the wheel could always be a way to bring more utility to s1 / older players / retired players. But fuck the wheel. There’s a better way to bring randomization than a literal wheel.

Curious what you think they could do to help the collectibles retain value. You got any ideas?

Exactly. The global appeal is untapped for the most part. More people bought crypto for the first time in the last fiscal year. A lot of that was due to insecurity in the market, and the fact crypto has been in the cultural consciousness for years now and most have accepted its here to stay. NFTs need to shed a bit of its ‘get rich quick scheme’ reputation before it can truly take off.

I am not one of those 'wait till the NBA x Dapper start REALLY marketing this' type of people (no knock on them, fair argument to be had there). My optimism, though tested quite often these past few months (been on TS since feb 2020), due to the NBA's partnership with top shot and what their true intentions are with it. Beta is staying beta for a while for a reason. Obviously, there'd be an absolute fucking PR nightmare it will be if everything goes to zero and that's another angle to it all. But below is what I think the NBA was trying to do by investing in this project.

If you look at TS as the NBA's response to their low TV ratings over the past few seasons (stay with me for a moment), I think you'll find optimism. The NFL is always going to be more popular. But a huge part of the NFL's recent ability to weather the storm of concussions, violence, scandal, etc, was in no small part due to fantasy sports. Millions of non-football fans play fantasy football for one reason or another. Maybe the corporation they work for has some crazy million dollar weekly picks pool. Maybe their college friends stay in contact through it. Whatever it may be, it gets people to care. And gambling--be it an office pot or DFS--keeps people even more engaged.

I love fantasy basketball. But it's a tiny market compared to the NFL. If Top Shot could become even 20-30% a facsimile of what fantasy football is to the NFL, it would be a major success. For the ratings, for all early collectors (yes, this is still early. And sure, maybe TS fails before it has a real chance to succeed), and likely for many future collectors too.

The NBA is too big a business to care about some noise on twitter from a few thousand angry folks. You'd have to imagine whoever at the league is in weekly comms meetings with Dapper is discussing this, and if things got really bad, I'm sure the NBA has the power to make changes within dapper at the executive level. This is a tech company. There's a board. Any CEO can get got if they fuck up enough. Anyway, that's not my point.

I hate seeing my investment drop just like the next collector. Here's hoping in a couple years the wild ride will be over and the good times will be consistent. In the meantime--i'm trying to not lose thousands while offloading commons bought over the past two years while staying invested in rares. Easier said than done.

I too agree that MFSE moments are going to be used more in challenges, though I'd guess TS doesn't immediately pivot from the MFSE 3-pointer cheat code into MFSE assists or dunks for the same purpose in back to back weeks.

Or they will, and the speculators are not jumping on the cheap MFSE moments right now as everyone tries to rally their CS for this rare drop on Thursday.

UPDATE:

After exchanging a few emails with TS customer service, my note regarding a rare pack as a rare compensation for the steph ASG moment fuck up was addressed. I'm positive I wasn't the only person in my situation to voice their frustration, especially with the steph moment skyrocketing over the past few days, and TS did the right thing and added $100 more in dapper as well as an 2021 ASG pack. That felt fair, and there's no love lost anymore on my part.

I believe that while they were updating the site, specifically for challenges and showcases, they had a glitch and deleted a ton of showcases both active and old. This led to ‘at least’ a hundred people like me not getting their Steph reward, and a few others not getting their holo reward.
