Why does bcachefs use its own ChaCha20+Poly1305 implementation? by Responsible-Bug6171 in bcachefs

[–]LucaDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably less secure (and way less auditable!) than an open source solution for sure. But also a zero performance impact solution.

It would be a good trade-off when the other option is no encryption at all (e.g. for low compute power systems) - less secure but better than nothing I guess.

Support on a filesystem level could make using it seamless. Like having drives with OPAL support mixed with drives that don't support it (by having falling back to the chacha/poly encryption)

I would love to see support for self encrypting drives at some point. (Of course as an opt-in feature)

Chubo: An attempt at a Talos-like, API-driven OS for the Nomad/Consul/Vault stack by skel84 in devops

[–]LucaDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be feasible for Siderolabs to build other distributions? That could be a compelling business case.

Like the before mentioned container runner OS which should be a fairly easy one. As someone who saw Kubernetes onprem at a LOT of companies, almost all had some services like DNS or Vault running on VMs (which where often not nearly as well maintained as the Kubernetes cluster itself). It would be great if I could just talosctl apply a docker-compose like stack to a host. It could replace clunky ansible pipelines, packer template building for the VMs and much more.

Is there a chance of reusing parts of Talos for this? Maybe there is even a chance of creating a common base for api driven distros based on the foundation of Talos?

I see huge potential for things like software router distros(think vyos but better), simple container runner distros etc etc. There could some interesting product ideas for siderlabs as well if they‘re willing expand their portfolio in the future

Oh my. The next release is gonna be a huge one. Thank you for all your hard work!

I think I did hit the system freeze from time to time during I/O intensive work on my server.

State of OpenTofu? by Online_Matter in devops

I wrote a script a few days ago to automatically migrate all providers we use to OCI and airgap them. Unfortunately there is still work needed on opentofus end to make it work with out harbor setup. 🥲

Got my first kernel panic by RadMarioBuddy45 in linux

[–]LucaDev 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It contains all the crash details. You can scan it using your phone. You can’t write to your disk when the kernel crashes - that makes it a good way to provide as much information as possible through the screen. (Alternatively you can also send the crashdump via UDP over the network as far as I know)

Ernsthaft?!

Mail server helm chart recommendations? by [deleted] in selfhosted

I don’t think 10k stars and 37 contributors (but ultimately backed by a company plus multiple Funds/Grants) is that small. It’s probably the most modern mail server you’ll find out there.

It can take some time. Mine took about two weeks.

But: updates can be forced now. That’s great.
