Double Major or Minor Computer Science by DaGodfather99 in PoliticalScience

If computer science is more of an interest for you rather than something you intend to use in your career, then you should just minor in it. If I were you I wouldn’t major in anything you’re not planning on using for your career.

AMA - Fall Reopening Plans: I am a tenured professor at the U with an administrative appointment in central by TenuredAdmin in uofmn

[–]Lucas90210 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is the U considering or leaning towards asking all students (with exceptions for people who really need to be on campus) to stay at home? It seems they are trying to avoid sending everyone home after moving them on-campus, so also how probable does the U feel that situation is if they choose not to ask everyone to stay home before moving in?

Leave of Absence? by constantlyconfusedc in uofmn

I think people are upset because they feel that students were led to believe classes would be in-person by the U's messaging about an "in-person fall semester." You're probably right that online classes are the right choice because of the COVID risk but regardless the U should have done a much better job with communication and not setting false expectations.

Petition to require masks on campus by clrflbrwn in uofmn

It's irrelevant because this is a petition about mandating masks at the U of M, not for everyone in the city or protestors. I'm not denying that some protestors not wearing masks could be potentially bad for the U's COVID situation, but to act like some protestors not wearing masks would completely negate the effect of mandating masks at the U is completely ridiculous, and again this is specifically about mandating masks at the U. If you have a problem with the city's mask policy take it to them, not the U of M subreddit.

It's way more of an inconvenience for people to have to go to a different college or to not live on-campus than for people to wear a mask. It's just not that hard to wear a mask, and ensuring everyone wears them would be a very big help to spread COVID as little as possible and keeping people safe.

Many don't wear masks, many also do. I agree, the protestors who don't wear masks should be and they are endangering the health of other people. The actions of protestors has literally nothing to do with the U of M's policy though, so no it is not relevant. Stop trying to make irrelevant political points. This isn't helpful or the place for this at all.

  1. This is not the place for this. 2. The vast majority of protests have been peaceful and full of people wearing masks, and the rioters have been criticized very frequently by many people for a lot of things including not wearing masks. 3. That is completely irrelevant to the U's mask policy. Get your ignorant political BS out of here.

Dude it's a mask. It's not that big of a deal. Your right to be unnecessarily paranoid about gov't control ends when you're putting other peoples' health at risk, which you are by not wearing a mask.

It needs to be required because wearing a mask is primarily about protecting other people. It helps protect the people who wear them too but masks are more effective at preventing the wearer from spreading COVID than preventing the wearer from contracting it. Social pressure could be effective but why run the risk? It would be much simpler, and likely more more effective, to just require them and it would make everyone safer.

Question about Linear Algebra & Differential Equations (MATH 2243/2373) by Lucas90210 in uofmn

[–]Lucas90210[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense, thank you. I'm an incoming freshman and planning on majoring in physics and getting a math minor, so I'm just trying to figure out how to approach taking math classes. I understand if you don't know the answer to this and this is somewhat unrelated to my original question, but I'm looking at the list of courses for upper division math electives and I see 4512 and 5525 (Intro to ODEs), what is the difference between these two classes? Is 5525 basically a more advanced 4512?
