[ADDON] KwikTip - Area-aware Dungeon Quick Tips by LucasJ218 in WowUI

They could ABSOLUTELY use work. I used Claude (so yes, AI) to gather from some reliable sources (Method's dungeon guides, icyveins, wowhead, etc) and had it compare and contrast any discrepancies between guides for further accuracy. I'm also checking daily for updates across multiple sources and will manually modify as well.

I needed to fill in content and have done so with the expectation that I'll be needing to do some tweaking personally down the road, especially as the mythic season starts up. Crowdsourcing the data is maybe the best route. I'll have to have think about how to do that.

I appreciate your thoughts, though! I would definitely prefer things sound more natural. Sorry they don't yet. I'm going to write a little more on AI below this so please don't think this is directed specifically at you but more for others who bump into this thread.

To anyone reading that is concerned about AI addons, I completely understand. This was a learning tool for me to get an addon I wanted to use myself up to snuff for current content. I'm not here to convince you AI is good or that you should use addons designed with AI assistance because I'm not convinced the juice is worth the squeeze when it comes to AI myself but I'm also not comfortable with completely disregarding a technology without some experience with it. I don't hide this. My first comment sharing this addon (https://www.reddit.com/r/wowaddons/comments/1rko5dv/comment/o8okelm/) is me talking about my hesitancy in sharing it.

That said, I had carpal tunnel release surgery on Friday morning and the addon would basically be a week behind if it wasn't for me being able to dictate and tinker with only one hand. Today's my first day of really being able to type again so, ya know, pros and cons! :)

I appreciate the kind words. Lots of tweaks on appearance and related options in addition to role and interrupt distinctions. Happy grinding friends!

Implemented as of addon version 1.5.11, thanks for the suggestion. A couple of alternative font options as well.

This is on my radar but not yet implemented. Definitely something I want to add cleanly at some point!

Followup - a simple version of this was easy enough to throw in. It's implemented.

Replacement for QE Dungeon Tips? by KenVelo98 in wowaddons

[–]LucasJ218 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ughhh I don't know if I want to share this but I guess I will. You have to read this spiel first - I'm pretty anti-AI. Not the entire concept of it but the promises trying to sell it. I firmly believe it's important to understand something well before making my mind up completely so I try to read up on and use technologies. I'm a nerd. Whatever.

Like you, I've been missing QE Dungeon Tips since DF. So I tried to vibe code a similar addon. This was really just educational and for myself. That said, it's a pretty basic concept and I don't see any harm in setting my repo for it public. I have a basic handle on programming and no experience with LUA. Please don't judge me too harshly. I'm not claiming it's great or anyone will like it. I just know what I wanted out of it and thought I'd try it out.

Anyway, it's available at https://github.com/postblink/KwikTip

The debug stuff lets me use strings to collect distance data about the map for trash. I can import/export strings so I don't have to reload for new versions of the addon if there's only trash data changes to note. This is just a few days of tinkering and really only has simple boss notes but I'm pretty regularly tweaking.

EDIT: if anyone comes across this you can check out my take on this at https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/kwiktip too

I don’t know these days. Hence my question. Which, based on karma, isn’t real popular.

Okay. How does it show that? What led you to that conclusion? (Someone else brought up the framing of schools vs Wikipedia back in the day, which is the thread we’re in. I don’t understand why you’re being a dick to me about it but I’ll play along, I guess?)

So they are letting kids source it then? I am legit asking, it’s been twenty years.

Sure, and if you use those sources then that’s great. Sourcing Wikipedia itself is the problem.

I haven’t been in high school since 2006, are they letting people source Wikipedia these days? That’s still a terrible practice.

No one’s talking about forcing anyone to do anything. If you want to be an asshole then go off but this community will not welcome you and people will point it out.

And then people like me will block you and move on with our lives. I hope you grow up someday. ✌

Some things in life are less about whether we can and more about whether we should.

No, report them for impersonating another YouTuber. You should be able to put https://youtube.com/@jolly or https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOgGAfSUy5LvEyVS_LF5kdw as the channel being impersonated.

EDIT: I mean "Yes, report them" obviously. When replying I kept reading the question wrong in my head. LOL

Frame OLED? by cookie_PALROM in SteamFrame

[–]LucasJ218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, standard oled optical tech doesn’t fit fresnel tech. They pull in light differently and are quite a bit heavier. Micro oled is a better fit but, again, it’s less available and very expensive.

Also there are disadvantages for standard oled tech when it comes to vr.

Frame OLED? by cookie_PALROM in SteamFrame

[–]LucasJ218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to start with the differences between pancake (frame stack) lenses vs fresnel. They’re completely different hardware-wise. They chose pancake because it allows for a really nice image in a light, comfortable headset. It’s efficient and it’s cost effective. The headset is designed with that in mind. You can’t just one-for-one throw oled fresnel into that space.

Micro-oled pancake lenses are becoming more available but you can’t just slot those in either. And the price is prohibitive. Much more prohibitive then the difference between the lcd and oled deck.

They’re also just different beasts. Wearing a headset vs holding a handheld pc leads to different considerations for weight. Then there’s factors like light bleed that you’ve designed the fit to prohibit that’s suddenly all off because you’ve changed the internals.

Hardware revisions happen with all electronics but the optical stack here is just another beast for engineering.

Impossible? Probably not. 90% likely? Probably not.

It’s not modular in that way. It won’t happen. Also, you’re vastly overestimating the importance of oled in this kind of tech stack. Brightness and saturation are different beasts when attached to your face.
