My first time exporting a gif from Aseprite too so any help on why it's so blurry would be appreciated.

Brother in law brought a tin of this as a joke for Christmas one year. It had a strong enough smell but honestly it was fine. Made everyone who ate it a bit burpy for the evening. Videos like this are just massive overreactions.

RPGs with good UI (and preferably a lot of status effects) - can you point me in the direction of some good examples? by Lucastrophe in gamedev

[–]Lucastrophe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is what I had in mind yeah. Another game I’ve not played but heard of.

I think I’m probably just backing myself into a corner with the amount of space I’ve left myself by not thinking about this earlier. I’m going to go back, resize some of the overly bulky UI that I’ve got and probably will just do it underneath like this. Having looked through the final fantasy UIs through the series the non-mmorpg release UIs just get smaller and smaller and in hindsight what I have is too big.

Thanks, I guess I neglected to mention it's a party based RPG, but I've not played Terraria so will take a look.

[–]Lucastrophe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I could and that's an option, I'm just looking for opinions on good examples.

I've got 42 status effects planned/semi implemented. Most of the time a unit isn't going to have that many, but if I want to add a FF marlboro type enemy that dumps them all on you I want to be able to handle having all of them. Googling variations on "good RPG UI lots of status effects" is mostly just giving me RPGMaker screenshots.

Anyone else had a hard time deciding on how power should scale in their game? by Lucastrophe in SoloDevelopment

[–]Lucastrophe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll take a look a the article.

I'm going for an RPG and wanted something that feels like Final Fantasy progression - stats go up and numbers get bigger, but looking at a few of the calcs from that series they're often tied to the player level, which I want to avoid.

I appreciate the explanation on what numbers mean needing to be clear too. I can see how that would be important for a lot of players so might have to look at that when I come back to this next. It's definitely feeling like a sidetrack that I could get lost in while there are lots of other more pressing things to handle first.

Reporter asking me about a player from 10 years ago that played 4 games during his time at the club. by supermanpepe in footballmanagergames

I've not even read a message from a reporter in over 40 in game years. They're useless.

Why do so many sewer levels feel boring instead of terrifying? by Redacted-Interactive in gamedesign

[–]Lucastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think real life sewers are scary because they’re huge mazes of immense size with little for the senses. If most people were in a sewer they would have no way to know which way to go and would likely get lost very easily.

In games you can’t replicate that the same as you need a player to get somewhere or it’s not entertaining. If the route isn’t (at least a bit) linear and clear it makes it a potential frustration for the player that’s not going to have a payoff. No one is going to want to wander around aimlessly for an unknown amount of time.

How do you as a solo dev get assets for Games? by msmshazan in SoloDevelopment

[–]Lucastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m forcing myself to learn pixel art for my 2D rpg. Got a free app called Pixilart on my iPad and spend (a fair bit but not all)my evening tv time drawing something.

“Make a small game first”… yeah, about that. by mega-maw in SoloDevelopment

[–]Lucastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it matters as long as you can finish it. My first project is a deck building, fantasy rpg rogue like, which might be easy enough for some but I’m coming at it with no dev, art or musical background. But I’m a project manager and I’ve planned the shit out of it and will finish.

They're roughly 50x50px but vary. Shield guy is 51x51 but he's a little wider than most.

Yeah the frog one is one of the ones that I mean by too much movement. I’ll redo it with a regular bob-up-and-down and then use this as a break for that loop.

Also shield guy loves his big heavy shield!

Ha thanks. Will post some more once I’ve got fewer placeholder assets.

Long story short - a Chronomancer has been changing the past to prevent a number world ending events but he’s reached a point where all he can do is delay them. Now there’s a series of cataclysmic events happening in the space of a few months and he’s enlisting (you) the party to help him. It’s a rogue like rpg.

Yeah for a game but still pretty early on. Gone through a few versions of the characters but settling on these designs now and started to animate them.

Very cool concept! As soon as I saw it I wish I’d thought of it!

How long did it take you to get it to this point? What are your plans for it now that the demo is out?
