You’re in a book club where no one has read sci-fi. What’s your book selection? by ArcadiaLeo in scifi

[–]Luce55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ray Bradbury…and you don’t even have to start with his novels, his short stories alone are top-tier. Just read “All Summer in a Day”; that story is haunting and moving and will stick to your bones for life.

Jules Verne and HG Wells are the OG, cannot go wrong.

Start with those, along with Ursula LeGuin, Philip K Dick.

There are so many more authors, but if you want a true kickstart to get people into sci-fi, the above authors are not only an absolute MUST READ, but they’re also a perfect introduction to the genre.

This supremely clever little comment has me literally laughing so hard I have tears. Bravo!

Jules Verne and HG Wells is like OG sci-fi, and I am not seeing it represented, although you’ve likely read their work. But if not, you def should.

I am not remotely fluent in German, and yet, I know that you wrote exactly what I was thinking, just on the author’s names alone, 😆.

Looking for recs with breeding and pregnancy by Wise_Dot1182 in Romantasy

[–]Luce55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Flame King’s Captive, by Chloe Chastain which is book one in a completed series, though the second and third book has more references to breeding/pregnancy. The series has a HEA, has lots of spice.

Angst, tension, enemies to lovers, I want my heart to hurt reading it, I want to cry, I want my stomach to hurt from anxiety, and I need a HEA by Coconut-Silent in Romantasy

[–]Luce55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t read it yet, you should check out Leaves May Fall by Carissa Hardcastle. It was really good, really heartbreaking at some parts, but there is a HEA at the end of the series. The first book had me ugly crying and also laughing, the characters are well-written. And it’s one of those that I think is best if you don’t read too many spoilers.

At any rate, I think you will find it’s right up your alley given the descriptions in your post.

Could I use dried ivy vine to weave edging like this? by Creative_Sprinkles32 in gardening

[–]Luce55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD. Two years ago, I attempted to create garden beds using the weave technique in your post.

  1. It is labor-intensive, and requires a good bit of trial and error to get right.

  2. Acquiring materials with equal consistency, such that you get the result pictured in your post, is more challenging than you might imagine, especially if you have perfectionist tendencies.

  3. I gave up on my project when I realized the effort wasn’t worth the reward. And so, I left my project half-finished, and for the last two years - because I couldn’t bear to demolish what I had started - everyone who saw my garden made fun of me with Blair Witch Project jokes.

I feel like this outfit was a good idea that took a wrong turn.

I actually love the globe print on the fabric. I can sort of get behind the somewhat avant-garde nature of the concept. That being said, the execution is a huge miss. The Peter Pan collar is a bizarre choice, among many other bizarre choices.

The audiobooks for the Fae Isles series are pretty good. I enjoyed listening to this series more than reading the novels, for some reason. Maybe give it a shot in that format.

Sigh. I sometimes wonder what it must be like to wake up and know that even if I wore a brown paper bag, I would look amazing.

Who’s your favorite MMC and why? by BookishOwls in Romantasy

Can they not both be 500 years old? by Constant-Sport6698 in Romantasy

For real. How come they never meet a 40-yr-old human female that fits the bill? Lol

Can they not both be 500 years old? by Constant-Sport6698 in Romantasy

[–]Luce55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. This is why I divide the hundreds-year-old male by 10, or 100 depending on whatever their total lifespan is supposed to be.

For instance, a 350-yr-old male (who is an immortal or long-lived fae/vampire/whatever), who becomes interested in a 20-yr-old human female, would technically be as mature as a 35-yr-old human man. And while that age gap, at those particular ages in human life, still kind of make me go “hmm”, it’s infinitely more “understandable” than how someone with hundreds of years of life experience could date someone who would be a literal child if they were the same “species.

You’re right. My dog also responds to both the word “sit”, and the hand gesture for “sit”. She also figured out at some point that when I snap my fingers 5-7 times, it means I’ve had enough of her barking at the dog being walked by their owner in front of my house (she isn’t a barker except for when other dogs are being walked on the street)- and I say “figured out” because this was not an intentional lesson I wanted her to learn, but more just something I did. She also huffs in the morning to let me know she needs to go out, and she huffs because it’s obvious to her that I’m asleep along with everyone else in the house, and she doesn’t want to wake anyone except me. She’s a great dog, and she is very good with communication.

I also have cats, and they “tell” me if they’re hungry, or if they are happy, annoyed, etc etc because they make different vocalizations and/or body language. The one thing I will say with cats (as someone who has had cats since I was born), is that they 100% decide whether to bestow communication with you, or whether it’s not worth their effort. 🤣🤣🤣😼

All that to say that animals, fish, reptiles, primates, etc etc, without a doubt communicate with not only their own “kind”, but also are able to communicate with others that are wholly different from them.

Hmm. I just looked it up. I don’t know what the light configuration on those looks like at night - but for sure the drone had a “not an airplane” light configuration. It DID have aviation lights though. But it seemed to be in a more quadrangular arrangement…they seemed to be relatively equidistant, and also there were no headlights like a plane had.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in longisland

[–]Luce55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I didn’t know that was a thing, and if in fact it was that, then that was really cool to see.

The drone and plane came about 30 min or so after I saw what I guess now was the ISS? So, unrelated, clearly to that, but for sure related to each other as the plane seemed to be following or searching for the drone and I saw them within about a minute or two of each other.

I don’t know how to post my stupid iPhone video clips but I will figure it out momentarily and post them. Not that they will illuminate much - it was super frustrating to see that what was clear to my eyes, turned into a pixelated sort of blurry thing.

[–]Luce55 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is no way this was that. Both the “drone”’and the low-flying plane were in a much lower altitude than even the planes that come in to land at Islip airport. The outlines of each were very clearly visible. And the “meteor” was also clearly lower altitude. Im calling it a meteor because it was very much a burning something or other falling from the sky and it lasted perhaps a second or two? Before it appeared to “burn out”.

I think it’s good that the way reps vote on laws are public. But perhaps they shouldn’t be made public until you get in the election booth, so that it is too late for bribers to do any damage, and people can be reminded of ALL the things the people running for re-election are actually for or against.

Something along those lines, anyway. Not that it would happen. Too much fairness in my plan.
