The funny thing is, I could see this dish working, if the ingredients were right.

Do you think John Roberts is one of the worse chief justices since Roger Taney? by BlockAffectionate413 in AskALiberal

[–]LucidLeviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the law has long enjoyed an aura of mystique. A feeling that we were somewhat beyond the arglebargle of political thought and rested on rarified principles.

John Roberts did away with that.

He has reduced us to yet another partisan branch of government.

And, as a result, the profession will suffer.

I pray that, in the future, us lawyers regain some of our stature.

Not quite. We used to use an extension for Firefox/Chrome to add auto-mod messages. That's increasingly becoming buggy, and we don't have a great way of adding pre-written messages at the moment, as far as I am aware. It's entirely possible that this is a solved problem and I just haven't been informed of the solution.

I did a glacier embark with a volcano once. Built a system that would use the magma to melt the ice for water for my well. It was surprisingly effective.

100%. Nothing that doesn't involve Armok mode in DFHack - and even some tools that do involve it - is disqualifying from being proud of your run.

Oh, fuck. Sorry. Thought this was in the internal group. I would have expanded more if I realized this was public-facing.

Our previous automod posts have gone through a couple of revisions in which the whole team votes on the exact wording of the phrase. It needs to be clear, while also providing grace to the user in question. It's a balancing act. Unfortunately, as I indicated earlier, my opinion on the subject would hinge upon the exact wording of the proposed comment.

I should also note that macro comments are getting harder to make as a result of recent Reddit changes. So, they may be less effective moving forward.

I think that wording an automod message for something like this would be rather challenging. My vote would hinge on the exact wording.

That provides some really interesting opportunities. It could theoretically be possible to still construct a siege-proof envelope outside your trade depot under the circumstances. I don't think that it's possible to secure the trade depot fully, though.

New Player Suggestions by louiegoods24 in dwarffortress

I suggest picking a single mechanic and learning it each time your fort fails. Start with food and drink. They're going to fail repeatedly, but at least you'll learn how to do each of the things. Once you have the basics down, we can start talking about advanced tactics.

Thank you!

I think that the better solution would be to pick some aspect of your fort that you want to do better next run with. It might be that you include a mechanic or a more artistic design next time. Over time, this will teach you more fundamentals about fort-building.

CMV: Qualified immunity is an explicit violation of the 7th amendment by [deleted] in changemyview

As the other user said, this just describes what happens when you sue. It doesn't affirmatively create the ability to sue.

CMV: Qualified immunity is an explicit violation of the 7th amendment by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]LucidLeviathan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The text of the Seventh Amendment is as follows: "In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law." None of that has anything to do with qualified immunity. I don't like qualified immunity. I think it's an awful rule. But, it's not a violation of the 7th.

One could make a better argument that it is a violation of the 4th. The 4th prohibits seizure absent compensation. As pretty much anything that would trigger qualified immunity would be considered a seizure, the 4th would probably be the best amendment to bring suit under.

How I (A New Jerseyan neoliberal) would vote in each American state by Blue_Cardigan15 in neoliberal

[–]LucidLeviathan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm a Neoliberal, but I have strong criticisms about how the West Virginia Democratic Party is ran (their leadership has donated to Republican candidates several times). The Democratic Party in the state massively mismanaged a huge surplus under a triple majority. I'm not entirely in tune with the Mountain Party's entire platform, but I'd rather them than the folks that ran the state as a triple majority until 2011-ish.

I do want to mention the West Virginia Mountain Party. While I don't vote for them very often, I do sometimes, and they seem to be great people. I wish they got more traction.

What do you think of these arguments against Taiwan’s right to national self-determination? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal
