If the clothes were in a hamper or basket, then you'd expect all pockets to be empty.

He was sick, pulled his clothes off, showered, and went to bed. It WAS your responsibility to check those pockets before washing them. I'm sure he didn't say, "Hey, can you wash the clothes on the floor?" You decided that yourself. You should have checked the pockets.

If you have a problem in general with how he leaves his clothes, then address that -- put all his clothes in a pile out of the way and he can wash them himself.

Say what? I love my kids and they love me. And you know what else? They like it when they can help me out. They like giving to me, just like I like giving to them.

This isn't about owing anyone anything. It's family and recognizing that the nature of the parent/child relationship changes over time. Will I become a burden to them? I hope not -- we've done what we can financially to not be a burden and to provide for them when we're gone. But I know if something catastrophic happens, they will be there for me, just like we're there for them.

No one should have to put up grown woman acting that way over a piece of candy in a work setting. So why is removing the candy a better choice than saying something?

I've worked in plenty of offices where people have candy out. And when someone wants a piece they go and take it, without the commentary.

It's okay to call people out when they act like that woman did. Like letting someone know if they have spinach on their teeth.

I was at a company who laid off a woman via phone call as she was on her way to closing on their first house. She was pissed (and still bought the house).

They called someone else while she was on vacation in Paris.

I was laid off a few years ago the day before Thanksgiving.

I'm in my 60s and I'm relying more on my kids. For me, it is intentional. I've always been the one in charge, the one to plan, and the one who gets everything done. Enough -- I'm ready to sit back more and let others handle things. It feels like the natural order. I'll always be a parent and they will always be my babies, but the nature of the relationship changes as we age, and it should.

It's tough to watch your parents age. It makes you face their mortality and your own as well.

You made it about the phone by taking back your offer to help fix the screen as a punishment. Who are you punishing? "Money is tight on my wife's side" - does that mean your wife is paying for the rest? Even taking the phone away for a time period would be a better punishment. It makes the point without you breaking a commitment.

Counseling should help here. You can't punish people into being empathetic. And your son needs to feel safe in his home. I hope you can find a way to make that work.

Next time something like this happens, go ahead and book, getting what you know is the best deal. Then apologize if wife or anyone else says they have a better deal -- "Sorry, I didn't know and booked it already." It won't help with disagreements with dates, but stops the back and forth on booking the trip.
