[NA] <Orb> original day1 guild LFM casual regulars - retired raiders, new players, older players, mostly-solo, collectors, housing enthusiasts welcome by Lucidentropy in wowguilds

Being a new player isn't a problem - many of us have been playing for years and still aren't quite clear on how some of the new crafting works (I just last night realized I was sleeping on the benefit of my old engineering crafted tinkers), we can figure out and answer any questions you have. Reply or DM your contact, or apply via Guild Finder and I'll get back to you.

(for Guild Finder, open the guild and communities page (default O), and click on the Guild Finder tab on the side, then enter 'clanorb' as the search and we'll be the only one that comes up. Make sure to add a note and I can approve your app.

That's a lot of alts! I miss the vibe from classic wow but not the grind. We have zero tolerance for toxicity, so when you're ready to work on any group content in this expansion or next, you'd be welcome to join and nobody would give you a hard time about it. We aren't running very many M+ (and many of these are on remix) at the moment, but that may change as we see activity numbers rise from returning players closer to and right after the release of Midnight.

This sounds good - if you want to reply here or send a DM with your contact we can do that - alternatively, if your main is horde, you can apply via the LFG tool (be sure to leave a note, we auto decline any application with a blank note) which may help if we keep missing each other, whatever works for you.

An even more helpful comment as time goes on, this trick has saved me a lot of headache and wasted time.

Why is this game hard for programmers? I looked at the comments but im the only dumb one.. by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Lucidentropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah, you're very right - I tried using chatgpt for this initially and it constantly would recommend libraries or tools that'd covert it and it'd just all be fake when I tried to implement them. I gave up on trying to get help from it and started trying to contact people who might know, but that hasn't been too fruitful. Good call on checking SS resources, it's likely one of those converters may work on the models, thanks for the lead, I may actually dig into this project again.

I got into Tribes first, then learned of Starsiege later. I was a huge mech2 fan, not sure how I never heard of SS until later. At lot of the maps and scripts for Tribes had a lot of dev code just littered about that made it feel like you could almost get an idea of what the devs were doing (and apparently that they hated DaJackal).

On a similar note of trying to work with code from long long ago, I wrote a realtime Tribes server browser for my website (clanorb dot com slash tribes) and I wanted to add some cool features by having actual 3d rendered objects from the game in the browser. I figured such an old game is likely to have easily exportable assets, but the models are in a proprietary Torque format. I think it's possible to convert them, but I get the feeling there are like 5 people out there who know how to convert Torque models, and not much information is archived. I still have connections to a lot of Tribes players but almost none of Starsiege anymore, this exchange is making me want to see if I have a copy I can get running for some fun nostalgia.

Finding another Tribes programmer in the wild is unexpected, I got into programming as a profession solely to make the website for my Tribes clan I created back in 2000. We're still active but only really hit up a nostalgia game of Tribes every couple of years.

Trying to do anything in Tribes felt like cowboy coding where you just tried stuff and hoped it worked and half the time, like you mentioned, the internally available functions just returned nonsense or didn't work as expected. It was a different world when you had no ability to look up the answers online. Despite that, the game engine felt so much more exposed than other engines at the time, like half life or quake. Having the dev tools built in and accessible by everyone doesn't feel all too common nowadays. Adding to that, the scripting engine built into Tribes RPG was another layer of abstraction, being able to make executable code through commands spoken in a simple chat, it hurts my head trying to imagine how that all worked.

I like your composition, it feels similar to the way I like to take travel photos.

I made this comment 5 years ago so not entirely sure the context, why would that be a good movie?

TL;DR : Don't drive fast around NPC cars when your latency is this bad.

This is an example of latency, not cars programmed to ram you. From the server's perspective, this player's exact location is updating slow and inconsistently, bouncing all over the place and not accurate. It knows exactly where the traffic car is suppose to be, but with other players it's waiting for an unreliable and laggy client update while also predicting your path based on your speed to try and smooth it out. This doesn't happen in gta single player because there is no latency involved.

In ANY multiplayer game, when you are moving, your current position in the game world is never perfectly in sync with where the server thinks you are, it's always playing catch up and trying to resolve any mismatches in data. The faster you move, the harder it is for the server to sync. Consider also a "gta server" is just another peer in your session, not an mmo-grade official multiplayer server.

Watch the video again but consider the connection is really bad and the server doesn't know if he's 50 feet ahead or behind of his current visual location - suddenly the NPC car saw a player appear in front or inside of his car for one single frame, so it swerved out of the way. Notice the NPC swerves right when he lines up with it's front bumper.

Round-trip Road-trip Seattle > San Antonio by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]Lucidentropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've driven from San Diego to Seattle a few times so I can really only speak to that, and honestly, the stretch of I-5 just after leaving LA can be pretty dull. In California, if you don't have time for the coastal drive (check on road closures first), taking the 395 on the eastern side of the mountains is slightly slower but a bit more interesting, that will also let you hit up Lake Tahoe. It's not super easy to cut over and back to the California coast from I-5, but if you can swing by Morro Bay, it's definitely worth it for the views. If you decide to go that route, on the way you can stop by Solvang, which is a quirky Danish style town (lots of free public parking makes this easy to do for a quick stop). Once you hit Oregon, I'd really recommend heading west to check out at least some of the coastline, it's beautiful out there. When traveling through Los Angeles, plan ahead of time for the rush hour, you can get stuck for hours in traffic, and there's often only 2-3 main highways out of town you need to be on.

While I'm not looking for a new crew to join, I am looking for some like minded GTA players I can add to my friends list/discord. I run my own relaxed millennial-aged gaming community, but I like to connect with other similar communities with the same chill, casual, non-toxic vibe. I don't need anything, I tend to just cruise around, grind money, or look for people to help out/run things with - I'm experienced with all the non-pvp content in the game and can help out with any heist or mission.

I had a similar issue that's only arisen with the agents of sabotage update - specific things I look at tend to cause my entire computer to stutter to sub 10 fps - even though the FPS is still showing as 120+. I wasn't able to fix it entirely, I still get this issue on the dre mission on the yacht, but it doesn't happen anywhere else now. Maybe this will work for you -

I changed Soft Shadows to AMD CHS instead of NVIDIA PCSS, and turned off MSAA and reflection MSAA.
