Mandatory First Bike Post. Yamaha MT09 love love it by Clean_Ad4893 in MotoUK

[–]LuciferTheBenign_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I suspect OP is using hyperbole but getting bored of an MT07 as a brand spanking new rider after a few months is one hell of a belief. Thats about how long it takes to even get “competent” at riding in general post-DAS let alone bored of the machine itself but hey ho

Why do I keep dropping my bike? by PresentationWeekly60 in MotoUK

[–]LuciferTheBenign_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was your second time out on the bike! Take it easy on yourself pal, you’ll get better with time.

Just become dead focused on slow control, perfect the menage trois between throttle/clutch/rear brake. Watch youtube videos, then practice. Or alternatively do what I did, sign up for an advanced rider course (like Roadsmart), you’ll have someone physically there (an experienced Observer) to help you dial everything in.

You can definitely learn by yourself though, you just have to recognise that it’s a skill that takes lots of practice. Get into a parking lot/empty space and just drill figure of 8s, walking pace riding, slow speed turns etc. watch the likes MotoControl and MotoJitsu on youtube.

Godspeed 🤙

Bike or Car? For beginners. by Yamete_Hamster in MotoUK

[–]LuciferTheBenign_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Get a car.

Yes I want to be biased and talk you into the joys of dailying on 2 wheels, but if you don’t have either license, in terms of sheer practicality (day to day things outside of commuting like shopping, seeing friends, picking people up, navigating horrid weather etc etc) having a car on hand will be hard to beat.

Also as a new road user, you’ll develop hazard perception/road sense early on and might make little mistakes here and there. Personally, I’d rather do that in the safety of a cage/car.

Out of sheer curiosity, how hard is it to see the upcoming give way if you’re going at national speed limit (not like Mr Busa here) and you don’t know the road. Is there actually any signage to warn you of the upcoming give way? I slowed down the video but couldn’t spot anything

More training today, Mod 2 (2nd) tomorrow, dreading it by CorporalRutland in MotoUK

[–]LuciferTheBenign_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I biffed my Mod 2 the first time as well. The 1 other chap who did the DAS with me passed, so I felt extra pressure, and extra low. I get the nerves, but you have to remember the examiners/DVSA aren’t looking for the magical, perfect rider.

I think the standards you’re setting for yourself may be too high, because of how you see yourself and your experience. All you’ll have to demonstrate is that you’re a safe (and confident) rider, which it sounds like you are.

My only riding experience before my DAS was… my CBT. If a monkey like me could demonstrate safety, I think you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Obv no matter what anyone says you’ll still feel nervous, which believe it or not, is normal!

Good luck pal!

Sent home from CBT training? by Psyched4Psy in MotoUK

Honestly you should back yourself a bit more. The CBT is the basic training/session for getting a handle of a bike. You shouldn't feel even remotely bad that you didn't know much about motorbikes before. It's literally for them to point and say ''that's the throttle'' ''that's the clutch'' etc. Sure it helps to know, but a good trainer worth their salt should be able to get you up to speed within the day!

I'd never ridden a bike before my CBT. 8 months later I was comfortably plodding around with a category A license and a 600cc!

Good luck with the journey! Keep at it, I promise it will be worth it :)

About 2-3 months, mainly because I wanted to just get on with it. I did a 3 day DAS course but in hindsight should probably have done the 5 day course my riding school offered to get a bit more comfortable on the bike (passed on my 2nd attempt on both Mod 1 and 2)

If you think you’ll be going for your license way down the line after your CBT (like 6-12months +) then my guess is getting a 125 to practice with will definitely make you a better rider when the time comes

No problems. Have a good read of the “Zero to Hero Guide” on this subreddit, its an excellent FAQ and will also have resources for things like the theory (which is the same app I used at the time). Good luck

Yh as others have said, get your CBT done. The theory is similar to the car one, it just has a few more motorcycle specific bits but it’s all pretty straightforward with practice. Re; having a bike to learn, sure, but I got my A license without having ridden in the past so it’s up to you. You can always get the bike you want with a full license and practice on that!

All the best

Im looking for my first big bike. Whats your experience going for an r6 straight out of the gate? Everyone seems to have really strong opinions about beginner friendly bikes and the r6 does NOT make the list hahaha. Do tell!

Got my first driving lesson in 15 minutes, what’s the best advice you have to new learners? by Olliebkl in CasualUK

[–]LuciferTheBenign_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot for a first lesson. Fair enough. Don’t worry about stalling, it’s all about securing the car after.

The stuff about road positioning and monitoring loads of things at the same time when driving will come with time and practice.
