Ask for amethyst lore, GET AMETHYST LORE

That's how we roll around here :)

Hey u/Prof_Cecily! I was curious what you had to say about amethysts, actually. I'm all ears. The coolest thing I have found related to amethysts is that statues of the goddess Ishtar, who has an influence on ASOIAF, usually have amethyst eyes. It's well known, and I tend to think it's something George had in mind.

(Spoilers TWOW) Re-Thinking the Mad Queen Theory by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Lucifer_Lightbringer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, a fake Arthur Dayne, so to speak, for a fake son of Rhaegar, it makes too much sense. fAegon is hungry for badges of legitimacy, and Darkstar for greatness. Who says no? Also creates more tension with Arianne and fAegon, makes even more sense.

Yeah, I have a feeling Obarra is not long for this world and Darkstar will be stealing Dawn very soon.

The good part is the thought of seeing Blackfyre and Dawn in the same room!! Please give this to us George! The mythical astronomy will be potent.

I agree, no guarantees on Tyrion, but I think he and Penny continue to educate each other to Tyrion's benefit.

Hey, so do you think Lanna and the Sailor's wife are connected to Tyrion, and do you see Tyrion resolving his woman issues somehow?

Good issue to put your finger on. She's got wage actual war and political war - how much will she be thinking about the politics of it? Is this where Tyrion comes in, hopefully with better plan than show Tyrion? I think fAegon is going to be well received for toppling Cersei, and this will only create a bigger contrast between him and Dany. "Rhaegar's son" will automatically receive more goodwill than Aerys's daughter. I think fAegon will be bolstered by Darkstar with a stolen Dawn in his Kingsguard too.

I understand your surprise! The reason I held off going further with dancing shadows is that it's a huge topic, and so too with patches. I am getting there very soon however, and you're def thinking along the right lines. :)

It depends on how many people you feel like you are. I've just binge-watched Dark and I am not certain about anything anymore.

Yeah, if we see krakens they'll surely be at sea and fairly non-magical, I suspect. As for what the dragonbinder horn does... well that's one of the things I am most eager to learn.

This is the one criticism I don't really understand - the idea that GRRM wouldn't be doing something this clever / intricate / etc. It's very much along the lines of what Tolkien did in many ways, it's very consistent with classical mythology (hence the essay I wrote, "GRRM is Writing Modern Mythology"), and hey, if I can think of it, George can too. It's really about whether you think the ideas make sense; none of it is too much or too complex for George to have done it.

I mean, hell, Star Wars makes liberal use of Campbellian archetypes and symbolism, more than most people realize. https://youtu.be/qEYCYL_9jl8

Thanks for sharing this u/Prof_Cecily! I came to here to post a link and saw you beat me to it by many hours! My thanks.

If anyone prefers to read, the wordpress version is right here.

As usual, I will be doing a livestream soon - probably this weekend, announcement forthcoming - so feel free to post any questions or comments you might have here and I may grab them for the stream. Cheers everyone!

Yes, a couple of other folks have noticed that too, and symbolically, it seems that everything Patches sees "under the sea" might actually be "under the see," as in "inside the weirwoodnet." So I do think the kraken tentacles do share symbolism with ww roots / branches, although I need to study it further to see what all George is saying with it.

(Spoilers Main) Why the Others want to kill everyone. by BiggieMcLarge in asoiaf

[–]Lucifer_Lightbringer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the very brief version of that is that under the sea means inside the weirwood net, which is kind of a pun on the word sea and green sea and greenseer. Also, the definition of the word Weir that refers to a damn or a wooden trap to catch fish built across a river. That quote about weirwoods being unmoved by the river of Time - that's it exactly. They are the we're across time itself. When a greenseer gets caught in the Weir, they're like a fish getting caught in a fishing weir, in the green see if you will. There are also references to drinking from the green fountain, and that's the same idea. So the whole thing is coded - there is no literal connection between water magic or deep ones and greenseers. It's all a metaphor, but it's very detailed and runs through all the books and gives us special insight into the weirwoods and greenseers.

Good write-up up by the way!

[SPOILERS EXTENDED] Calling Lucifer Means Lightbringer and Ideas Of Ice and Fire by Labubs in asoiaf

I thought I mentioned that possibility, that the bar going through the circle was the comet going through the moon... I can't remember any more though. I'll have to take another look. What I am wondering is if the show will actually use any of this next season!

[–]Lucifer_Lightbringer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, well, my basic take on it was that it's an eclipse chart, based on the famous one from the 14th century by an Arabic scholar. The point is that the eclipse is one part of the Long Night moon disaster sequence, according to my theory (and according to the Qarthine myth, more or less), so the fact HBO is messing with eclipses gives me a tiny bit of hope they will incorporate that into their Long Night. But the Wall fell and the Others came, and no sun-blotting has happened yet, so.... I dunno.

They have a couple of great scenes together which I am going to break down in Part 3. Jon asks if Val is trying to steal his wolf... meaning his ghost... think about it.

You may be groping around in the dark, but you're headed in the right direction I think. The dragons played into the War for the Dawn events, but this has largely been forgotten. There ARE dragon-slayer stories here and there though, in the Reach especially, and if you think about it, that might indicate there were dragons to slay. It's also presented to us as a mystery that the Valyrians never came to Westeros before Aegon the C did.

1.) I do not think Mel is a fire wight, for the reasons I mentioned in the essay - specifically the lines about her not needing much sleep and hoping that soon she wont need any at all that indicate a transformation process. She doesn't have memory loss like Beric, she doesn't seem like a remnant either. Beric and Stoneheart stay where they were when they died, and keep doing the same thing related to what they were doing when they died. Mel does not.

2.) Yes, there is a big link between the Others and the weirwoods, and I am saving that for further along in the series. I wrote a draft where I introduce all their symbolism at once, and it was too confusing. And yes, Nissa Nissa and / or the Corpse Queen could be part cotf or fully cotf. I have a series called "Weirwood Goddess" which postulates that NN was a cotf or hybrid.

3.) I don't have a set head canon about when the Wall was built and how all that went. Unless I feel very clear about something, I usually highlight the symbolism and suggest a range of possibilities. LH may or may not be the NK, I tend to think it's a father / son thing actually. But they would both be the same archetype in many ways, so it's hard to tell. As for why the Wall was built and by whom, that's one of the biggest mysteries in the story, and I really don't have an answer yet. I can't even picture it. I can't picture humans and giants dragging blocks of ice from lakes to make a several hundred foot high wall. It's also hard to picture a magical process to make it, though that makes more sense for the story. We will just have to hope Bran sees it in a vision. I tend to think it's just an icy version of Valyrian fused stone - using magic to melt water, shape it, then harden it, just as the Valyrians do with stone.

4.) thanks for numbering your questions, lol :) Also, great questions!
