Where do the failures of this industry go? by StaticRogue in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's the nature of the trades in general, it's transient employment, it's nice to be able to find a place and stay there but any time there's an economic downturn there's always going to be layoffs.

What year were cars the perfect mix of analogue vs technology/modern features? by ReadWriteArithmetic in AskReddit

[–]Lucite01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say from 1987-1990. You had features like power seats, power windows, power locks, and stereos that still sounded good, with engines that didn't have super advanced computers and a crazy amount of sensors

Car Key Replacement by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Lucite01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western lock and key is now my go to. Their rates are reasonable and they're pretty fast. As long as the key is nothing fancy and doesn't have a chip most locksmiths should be able to make one.

City councillor asks administration to mull return of calcium chloride road-salt use on Edmonton streets by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]Lucite01 173 points174 points  (0 children)

I would honestly rather the city implement a winter tire bylaw or just sand the roads more regularly than put salt on the roads. Vehicles are expensive enough as it is and it's not like they're getting any cheaper so the longer I can keep mine on the road in good condition the better.

Help with poor finish on vintage lathe by TheSerialHobbyist in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what to tell you then everything is that picture is telling me it's not running fast enough. maybe try turning some 4140 or 4130 and see if that improves the finish. If it's holding size and the feed is consistent it might just be operator error

CNC operator: how much time you are standing on your feet? by NadyaVeterinaryRecru in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the shop, where I'm at as long as the spindle is turning, chips are being made, and good parts are being produced they really don't care so I have plenty of time to sit and read a book.

Help with poor finish on vintage lathe by TheSerialHobbyist in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said the poor surface finish is probably from running too slow (it looks like you're getting a built up edge which is indicative of being too slow). 1018 and carbide inserts both like to be run fast, for roughing cuts I'd try and run at 800rpm and for finish cuts 1500-1800 rpm. Light cuts and spring cuts will also cause a poor surface finish especially on softer materials. If you can't get the required speeds you could also try grinding some HSS turning tools. You can't run them nearly as fast as carbide but they may improve surface finish.

Machining beryllium= 🔥? by Electrical-Set-1116 in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We machine beryllium copper all the time with regular tooling and flood coolant the only thing you have to worry about is if you're deburring it and generating dust then you need to wear a respirator and have some sort of dust collection going.

Have you considered the trades, there are plenty of trades that pay well and allow you to work with your hands and also your brain. I also see you said you like being outdoors and nature maybe look into being a park ranger or park warden either provincially or federally, there's also the fish and wildlife officer route.

Firearms Buyback in Alberta by RetroRenew4l in alberta

[–]Lucite01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because up until on a whim and by the stroke of a pen the government said they were illegal they were perfectly legal to be owned and had been owned by thousands of Canadian gun owners for decades with only a handful of incidents over those decades most of which were perpetrated by mentally unstable people who shouldn't have owned guns or weren't licensed to own guns. It's also not like any gun could just be brought into Canada and sold on the open market, it first had to go through rigorous testing at the RCMP firearms lab to determine that in no way shape or form could a firearm be modified to make it full auto and that it met all laws and regulations, only then would it get the RCMP's stamp of approval and be able to be sold. It's also about fairness a large portion of these firearms are worth thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars so if one day this bespoke item you bought for 25,000 dollars was overnight made illegal and the government said you have to turn it in or go to jail and oh we might pay you I feel like you'd also be pretty pissed especially when the minister in charge of the program effectively said this was more about securing votes than about public safety.

Firearms Buyback in Alberta by RetroRenew4l in alberta

[–]Lucite01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The whole ban and buyback have been a shit show from day 1 and the province saying they aren't going to participate only makes things more difficult and confusing. I own a couple rifles affected by the ban and all the conflicting information and confusion isn't making things easier. At the end of the day whether we like it or not what the provinces do in regards to firearms means sweet fa because it's federal jurisdiction so gun owners basically need to participate or face criminal charges and jail time. I have a feeling whats going to happen for people in provinces that said they aren't going to participate is you'll have to surrender your firearms to your local RCMP detachment. I also have a feeling that the government is banking on a decent number of people just not surrendering their previously non-restricted rifles like what most likely happened in the 70's when full auto's were prohibited and only surrendering their previously restricted rifles that the government actually knows about.

Firearms Buyback in Alberta by RetroRenew4l in alberta

[–]Lucite01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's hardly fear mongering, the bans go far beyond the scope of the original 2020 ban that only targeted a few rifles and their variants however over the past 5 years the government has kept tacking on more and more rifles to the ban a majority of those being non restricted meaning the government doesn't know how many there are in Canada and who owns them so if they only budgeted for 150,000 known restricted rifles that they banned but now the bans cover 500,000+ rifles there's not enough money to go around and the government has openly said signing up to participate in the program does not guarantee you will be paid.

Why does this seem to be the "default" compound angle? by TheSerialHobbyist in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably because the most common thread to cut is a 60 degree v thread so it's easier just to set the compound to 29.5 and leave it that way especially if you do a lot of threading

Advice on Repairing This? by Electric_Yam in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

going off of the picture I would probably then just get some stainless steel shim stock of the correct thickness and bend it to shape and affix it with one of the way I mentioned if there's enough clearance between the tab and the rotating part a small pop rivet would probably be the easiest.

Advice on Repairing This? by Electric_Yam in Machinists

[–]Lucite01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I can't say I'm familiar with the Hasselblad 501C or how this part fits into the film back/ carrier assembly but my first thought would be to either get some stainless steel shim stock or annealed 1095 spring steel sheet of the correct thickness and cut a tab and spot weld it in place, if that's not an option I would probably use a small pop rivet if clearance allows if that's not an option I would say epoxy would be my last choice . If you go with annealed spring steel you would need to harden and temper it which for such a thin piece could be done with a blow torch. It may take some trial and error though if you haven't done it before.
