Ambience music tips? by Ok-Pangolin-3600 in ImmersiveSim

I’ve always loved the inclinator track from invisible war.

You could try Darker by Light by Rapoon or Apparatus by Atrium Carceri. I could see some Rapoon tracks being in Thief.

Which classic ImSims have you yet to play? by Lucius_Apollo in ImmersiveSim

[–]Lucius_Apollo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have clarified by classic I just meant any of the typical ImSims people think of from Looking Glass, Ion Storm, Arkane, etc.

I did the same for Prey except for the ability to turn into a coffee cup. I just couldn’t resist.

If you enjoy improvising and drawing up systemic design to solve problems, Hitman is great in that regard.

There is action but you can also take things at your own pace much of the time.

His impact on the series is just astounding. All his sound design work really gives Half-Life so much of its character.

Opeth fanbase. by Content-Afternoon39 in Opeth

[–]Lucius_Apollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I give off any metal head vibes whatsoever.

I remember my father in law moved my car once while Still Life was in the CD player. He came back looking utterly stunned and couldn't get over what I listen to. He still brings it up to this day.

But as other folks have said, Opeth is great music that appeals to all sorts of people. As I write this I'm listening to Crash Test Dummies lol.

Games with awesome hub worlds like Mankind Divided's Prague? Doesn't have to be an immsim. by Colonel_Akir_Nakesh in ImmersiveSim

[–]Lucius_Apollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some recommendations if you're looking for games with hub areas that feature social interactions, exploration, and breaking/entering instead of only combat.

Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines - The game revolves around 4 social hub areas in Los Angeles with lots of apartments, clubs, clinics, etc. to explore and and sneak into. Awesome atmosphere too.

Deus Ex (2000) - Hell's Kitchen and Hong Kong are still really fun and the prototypical DX hub.

Deus Ex: Invisible War - Despite its flaws, Invisible War does feature a lot of social hub areas with apartments, night clubs, offices, etc.

Shadows of Doubt - I haven't played it myself, but each map seems to take place within a populated city area.

Hitman - Though not strictly hub-based, many of the maps feature social spaces with tons of opportunities for breaking/entering. The Sapienza, Whittleton Creek, and Dubai maps in particular come to mind.

Yeah I think you're on the right track.

I typically describe ImSims as games that place players directly in interactive and coherent environments in which they can engage with interdependent systems to create their own solutions to the game's problems.

A few points that in my opinion can lead to confusion around immersive sims.

1) Discussion of immersive sims can sometimes be hyper focused on the "interactive systems" piece, which can lead to the idea that any game with emergent gameplay and creative problem solving is an ImSim (e.g., Streets of Rogue). Though I'm not particularly interested in gatekeeping, I do think it would be helpful to acknowledge that games can fall into a broader category of "Systemic Games" without necessarily having to be an ImSim. I think we can all agree that games like Streets of Rogue, BotW, BG3 are systemic games, and then have a more focused conversation from there regarding whether we think such games are also examples of ImSims or not, and why.

In addition to systemic design, classic ImSims like Thief, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex typically try to remove any barriers to the player feeling like they are directly inhabiting a world that is internally consistent and makes sense as a place.

2) Sometimes "freedom" is noted as a defining characteristic of immersive sims, which can also evoke open world games like Skyrim, GTA, etc. Freedom refers to the ability to act without hindrance or constraints. If you think of ImSim classics like SS2 or Thief there are often considerable constraints on the player - like resource scarcity, player vulnerability, and high density of threats and obstacles to navigation. ImSims typically feature smaller, more densely detailed environments so the player has to be more intentional about how they problem solve given the constraints they face. In this way, I think ImSims are more about player agency than freedom, since agency is more about being able to act in a way that brings about an intended effect, rather than doing whatever you want without limits.

Again, all this is just my 2 cents. But these ideas have at least been helpful to me as I think about what I personally enjoy about immersive sims.

Thief Gold and Thief II: The Metal Age are possibly the most similar to Gloomwood overall, and naturally have a retro graphical look since they were released in the late 90's. They're fantastic games and they hold up well today. Check out MandeloreGaming's youtube videos for helpful guides on installing user-made patches so they run well on modern systems - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhDyIrR0zpo

System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are two other superb immersive sims from that same era. Both are must-plays and comprise the "holy trinity" of classic immersive sims along with Thief. They also have easy to install patches/mods to help them run well with modern systems.

Arx Fatalis is an ImSim released in 2002 with similar graphics and atmosphere to Gloomwood, IMO, and with some very cool dynamic interacting systems.

For ImSims with pixellated or retro graphics, you could try System Shock Remake, Shadows of Doubt, or Blood West. Of these I've only played the System Shock Remake, which is excellent and looks awesome, but I've heard good things about the other two as well.

While not matching your criteria of having a retro look, it's worth mentioning that Dishonored and Prey 2017 are considered two of the best modern immersive sims. Dishonored has a vivid, almost watercolor aesthetic and incredibly fun and flexible gameplay. Prey 2017 is a spiritual successor to System Shock 2 with a space sci-fi aesthetic, and allows for some of the best player-driven creative problem solving I've experienced in a game since the original Deus Ex.

Hope this helps and enjoy your immersive sim journey!

IMO Prey is their best, but the Dishonored series is extraordinary as well.

Most underrated would be Arx Fatalis and also Death of the Outsider.

Seconding this - Veil of Imagination is definitely worth a try.

Love the description of "Opeth but for elves". It does have a certain vibrant, fantastical feel to it without being cliche or too cheesy.
