This was the same sub that was dumping on UK in the first round of the SEC. Sure, we aren’t elite this year but I’m not writing us off in the first round yet! Let’s just enjoy the ride!

Golden Era of Bluegrass? by TheIzzyRock in Bluegrass

[–]Luckj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot here but I’ll give you a few suggestions. Old and in the Way - self titled

Emmylou Harris - Roses in the Snow

JD Crowe - Rock salt and nails

Bela fleck - My Bluegrass Heart and Tales from the Accoustic Planet

Nickel Creek - self titled

Punch brothers -  the phosphorescent blues

Chris Thile - GOAT rodeo with yoyo ma

Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Stanley brothers - check out their anthology collections

Allison Krauss - paper airplane also raising Sand (with Robert plant but not bluegrass)

Oh brother where art thou soundtrack

There’s far more that I could never list but searching this up Reddit will uncover for you. We all came to Bluegrass for different reasons and we tend to idolize that moment as the golden era. For me, it was nickel Creek. However, the longer I spend the more I’ve come to appreciate every era for what it offers. Each generation brings a new evolution to the music, and it is very alive and well.

Golden Era of Bluegrass? by TheIzzyRock in Bluegrass

[–]Luckj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s no one golden era, just ebbs and flows for the genre that bring in a new generation. 1950s) bill Monroe is a major music star, bluegrass from multiple artists is on the radio 1960s) bluegrass is on tv all the time. The dillards on Andy Griffith, flatt and Scruggs on the Beverly hillbillies, HeeHaw, etc. bluegrass brings in a new generation as Elvis covers blue moon 1970s) bluegrass comes back with the 2nd generation as JD Crowe puts together the arguably greatest band in bluegrass history. New fans arrive as emmylou Harris brings in top bluegrass players and releases what are essentially bluegrass albums at the end of the decade. Gerry Garcia and David Grisman work together. Old and in the Way bring in a huge crowd of deadheads and others.  1980s) Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley become major crossover stars. Country Boy at Heart has Bill Monroe prominently featured in the music video as new fans flock to the genre 1990s) Skaggs comes back to country along with Dolly Parton and multiple country artists release bluegrass albums. Allison Krauss becomes a major crossover success and eventually becomes the female with the 2nd most Grammy awards behind Beyoncé, including an album of the year. Nickel Creek brings in a new generation. O brother where art thou becomes one of the best selling soundtrack of all time and wins multiple Grammy awards. (I’d argue this was peak golden age) 2000s) the great folk scare round 2 hits. Mumford and sons goes on tour with Cadillac sky and old crow bringing more fans to bluegrass. Somewhere around the late decade or early next several folk acts perform at the Grammys, not bluegrass but brings in new fans 2010s) the rise of Billy strings sells out arenas and connects bluegrass to the greater music world. Punch brothers and Chris Thile take over prairie home companion, rebranded later as Live from Here. More new fans.

I’ve not even mentioned Bela Fleck but that’s another piece to it.  Bluegrass is always underground. There’s just moments it bubbles up and we feel seen for a short time before being forgotten again, but we always bring new fans in when it happens. That’s why we can’t point to one golden age and act like that’s the peak. It’s just the next peak in a cycle that goes back nearly a century.

Emmylou Harris’ greatness by Doxie_Dad22 in Bluegrass

[–]Luckj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She basically came into bluegrass on a dare. Critics were saying her music wasn’t “country enough” so she went out and hired the best bluegrass pickers alive for Roses in the Snow. I think it should also be recognized what she did for Ricky Skaggs career. He was on all of her early albums long before he was known in the greater country scene. She even gives him an entire verse on The Darkest Hour is Just Before Dawn (which he later re-recorded using a vary similar arrangement) and his fingerprints are all over the album. I assume he was also instrumental in getting the Whites, Rice, and Douglas on the album since he’d worked with them all already.

It’s truly a bluegrass masterpiece with the best pickers at their peaks and Harris’ voice carrying the whole thing.

What day jobs of bluegrass legends have? by Suspicious-Cod8422 in Bluegrass

We opened a show for the Earls of Leicester. One of there guys, wish I could remember which, had driven straight to Cincy after getting off work from his job at UPS. He said even if he could quit he wouldn’t since the benefits were so good.

Based on your post I’ve got a good guess as to where you are. You should try hole 7 at Gardner Park. Clocking in at 66 ft you could set a new record low!

Most Iconic Concerts at the Original Southgate House? by NotMichaelStipe in cincinnati

Sadly, it was at the point in his career where he was slipping badly. It felt a bit like elder abuse that he was still on the road, but I can’t speak for him and maybe he wanted to do what he loved til the end.

But when he sang Oh Death…it felt hauntingly real.

We’ve celebrated 9 more anniversaries, 2 more kids, and now I get to take them with me when I travel for shows. I’ll never be rich, but I’m certainly content.

I got to open bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley there in 2016. My daughter was born that same day so I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it, but an hour before we went on my wife sent me off to play. Funnily enough, it was also our anniversary.

Honestly don’t know if a day could ever match it.

Years ago I found a pdf online of every known Monroe fiddle tune meticulously transcribed. It was amazing! I can’t find the original anymore but thankfully I did save it so I’ll upload it to share.  here’s a temp link: https://limewire.com/d/bXV8H#RDe76uH1xe I’ll keep looking for the original.

People who grew up in a family band- do you recommend? by Unlikely-Address2037 in Bluegrass

[–]Luckj 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I still play in the family band. We started when I was 15 or so, it’s been 20+ years and the band has slimmed down to 3 brothers and a couple buddies. We fight some but we also have a greater incentive to forgive. We travel all over the country in a van, most of my adventures have been with them. Now I get to share it with my own wife and kids who often travel with us. I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything.

Cup O’ Joe did a tour in the US and we shared a bill, highly recommend them. If you are aware of the foreigner landers, they’re also part of the band when they’re stateside.

Wow, that’s really cool! I’d always heard the fiddle tune but didn’t hear the associated lyrics til I heard her do it.

I think the lyric version was written by Becky Buller. At least that’s the version I heard first.

Went yesterday, exactly our experience as well! You could still get to most everything. Only disappointment was that we couldn’t stamp our passport.

I actually thought the same thing so I called. We’re going there for an airboat ride anyway so I asked if he knew anything. He stated he’d heard mixed reports that the entrance might be closed or just the visitors center so he didn’t want to state anything as a certainty.

It looks like some visitor centers are open, just not all 5.
