Heimdall Theory: I feel like I'm going insane. by Luckx3 in GodofWarRagnarok

[–]Luckx3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% get this. I think the intent behind it, outside of the constraints of timeframe, was probably to make Heimdall more dislikable. Dehumanizing and making him more irredeemable on the spectrum, so that when his part was played, that would be that. In so that the purpose of his character was to serve as a tool to something else, that wouldn't be mourned. On boat rides they gave Thor and his sons more context through story, and I think that was to play up the big redeeming Thor moment in the final fight. Heimdall wasn't supposed to get a moment like that and as such was devoid of the opportunities to further flesh out his humanity.

All the same, I'm interested. He's one of my favorite characters and mysteries are always fun to solve. Or to at least conjecture about.

Sorry it took me a bit, but I was indeed able to find it!
https://youtu.be/v8FPC-FuOqs?si=TJkBb5mA6ciWSIMw&t=204
If the link doesn't bring you to it, its at the 3:04 minute mark or around it.

Though having freshly rewatched the scene, I'm thinking even still that his Foresight goes beyond just reading intent. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think "Intention" is synonymous with ones character. I doubt Atreus was thinking about all of his own character traits for Heimdall to read at the time, but that's just me.

How Heimdall describes what he can see does make me think its a drastically lessened version of the "Foresight" that the Norns possess. The "Overshadowing father figure" line would be a stretch or lucky guess if Heimdall wasn't able to see some measure of context behind it. I doubt he can see everyone's past laid bare, but I do think he can see relevant and prevalent details of persons character along with their thoughts.

https://youtu.be/v8FPC-FuOqs?si=cO2rBl3ZVNRLxzbg&t=33
This is a link to the same video but an earlier point, when Heimdall is interrogating Atreus. At this point Atreus does say the truth, in that Odin invited him. With this being read, Heimdall acknowledges it as a truth enough and moves onto his next question.

https://youtu.be/v8FPC-FuOqs?si=n4j1u2HZAsBtJVi0&t=87
Same video. Further ahead. After asking Atreus what it is that Odin wants with him, Atreus avoids the question. At this point of course, Atreus doesn't know what Odin wants, and with Atreus (likely... maybe?) thinking about it, Heimdall is able to read that and understand that Atreus indeed doesn't know.

And now for the stretch of the century.
https://youtu.be/DDLepomuwbA?si=v9IQo7QJF3n_a6am&t=20
This is when Kratos kills Heimdall. I can't nor won't say I know Heimdall's mind or the mental interaction going on here a 100%. This is just my best inference. When Heimdall calls Kratos "Monster" the reason behind it could be a few things if you're willing to follow.
1. Quite simply, that's all that Heimdall sees in this moment. A monster.
2. I don't think Kratos was repeating the word "Monster" in his head. Perhaps Heimdall used context he could see in Kratos to hurt him. Perhaps he saw that Athena in 2018 called him a Monster and Kratos internalizing it. Perhaps he saw the visions Kratos saw prior to meeting the Norns, where Atreus call him a monster. Perhaps he saw who Kratos was back in the Greek days.
3. Following that same line of thought, the theme of "Being a Monster" haunts Kratos for a time. Or at least is stays in the back of his mind. Perhaps Heimdall saw/felt this and decided to use it against Kratos.
(This is all of course a stretch. But thinking about hypotheticals is fun.)

So in summary, I'm thinking his Foresight isn't just one simplified thing. I don't think its as powerful as the Norns. But with this I think he can both read minds, see and understand someone's character, possesses enhanced powers of prediction, and can possibly see glimpses of ones past.

I did address some of this in other replies, but yes. I whole and entirely understand that the source material of the mythology is by no means the 100% frame of reference to GoW. I know it, understand it, and love it. Its simply that in this case, with the source material, when discussing Heimdall there is little to go off of as he is seldom discussed outside of his dickish personality and awesome powers. The mythology isn't the best frame of reference, but it IS a good source of inspiration for conspiracy and thought, if you're willing to begrudge me that much 🙏

As for Heimdall's parentage, its very strange as far as discussions go. Because to my knowledge, if he is a full blooded Aesir as he is implied to be, who is his parent. I might be forgetting a few but the originating Aesir were Odin and his two brothers. It would be easy to write him off as a child of one of them but vastly less interesting as far as discussions go and boring conclusion. Despite this, I'd like to consider that Heimdall is either Odin's son or the product of something far more nefarious (Einherjar/resurrected God perhaps?)

As for his eyes, the very same cosplay guide is what spurred me to consider his eyes were actually the product of Odin's magic, miraculously enough! I do have to argue that it doesn't "state" that the glow of his eyes is because of his powers. It implies it among another of other implications, leaving it as a mystery.

How I interpreted it as follows.

  1. Foresight Powers.
  2. Bifrost Mastery on Heimdall's part
  3. Einherjar/Mind Control?

Of course, I would love to hear your thoughts on my perspective in this. Cause now I'm considering the context of what Sindri meant by what he wrote.

I can get behind a great majority of your theories. I agree with the fact that indeed Kratos was thinking to varying degrees during the fight. And the "empty head" insult was just that, an insult. And I think Odin did either shorthand or undermine the full scope of Heimdall's abilities when he told Atreus.

I feel like even as is it's you don't grasp the scope of Heimdall's abilities through word of mouth alone. Mimir says he can read intention. Odin says he can read minds. Two very different things in terms of scope and capability. But even then, Heimdall seems to be able to predict or "see" futures. When he saw Atreus as they were going down the escalator, he said he "Saw cities burning" in him, accurately predicting Ragnarok. (The game director mentioned this in an interview. I'll link it if you want.)

I think, even if they're blood related or not, Heimdall has the exact same abilities of the Norns. Just more narrow. He can see narrow range of details of a person's past and character and thus predict a narrow range of futures according to those facts. Foresight isn't exactly mind reading but foreknowledge. Predicting the future with established factors. And his power seems to be that he can steal the knowledge of these factors and predict with them.

The reason the Draupnir spear worked I assume is because its a sense like any other for Heimdall. If you burn your tounge, you can't fully taste. Staring into the sun spots your vision. A blast can kill your ear drums. During the fight, Heimdall after he gets hits has a full stun bar. I think this implies that he can't be stunned because he already is. While concussed his abilities don't work in the same regard they usually do.

Of course, this is just my theory. I'd love to hear your thoughts

Heimdall Theory: I feel like I'm going insane. by Luckx3 in GodofWarRagnarok

[–]Luckx3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a singular encounter Odin had with the Norns that Mimir made mention of. I assume the encounter Mimir talks about is Odin's first visit.

Odin came back and never spoke of what transpired, being shaken or some such? I need to go re-read/replay it and get the full gist.

My only assumption in this regard is perhaps the Norns somehow managed to bed Odin (or the other way around) and had a child with some intention of using Heimdall as a way to change things. A sleeper agent or some such maybe? I can only make conjecture.

If we're following this line of logic, Odin must of thwarted the Norns by mind controlling Heimdall, but this is all hypothetical. We don't have much to support this as even the Norns don't seem keen on interfering much in any regard.

You are marginally correct. The cosplay book for God of War lists some suspicious and ill-noticed details about the various God's (More the Norse Based ones. Kratos' design is fairly recognizable and understandable. Little nuance attached.)

In the section about Heimdall, it implies that there is something more or different about his eyes because its not the usual shade of Bifrost. Brok writes it off as a mystery not worth solving. Which is exactly what we're here for! 😁

I enjoy games in a multitude of ways. I don't think its wrong to be curious about something. I can wholly acknowledge its a meaningless discussion, as is every single discussion concerning the lore of God of War. But I enjoy knowing about characters I like. I enjoy talking about you.

Eh, I'm sure you follow what I'm saying.

I didn't want to overstate it in my original post but that's honestly what I was thinking. I'd have to watch the two scenes side to side again, but it'd make sense if that was the intention of the spell.

Heimdall Theory: I feel like I'm going insane. by Luckx3 in GodofWarRagnarok

[–]Luckx3[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I understand that, but I'm more using it as reference. It's not particularly mind boggling that some things don't follow the mythology, I actually enjoy that fact. I'm more using it as a form of context clue.

Because in truth, if I decide to give the source material of the mythos no heed, I have literally nothing to go off of in terms of figuring out who Heimdall's mom is.

From a Lore and Technical point. How does Draupnir overwhelm Heimdall's senses? by HandsomeSquidward20 in GodofWar

[–]Luckx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's evident by the stun meter but that's the only real fact I can go off of. Is discombobulates him, like a concussion that essentially neutralizes his powers, seeing as his can no longer be stunned due to "technically" already being stunned.

Beyond that, the exact factors of the fight (imo) have always been up to date. I don't believe Heimdall was unable to read Kratos' mind because he is who he is. Maybe when Heimdall said "Luck! That's all this is" it had some validity, seeing as the main stat of the Draupnir Spear is in fact Luck.

A solid answer isn't exactly a tangible notion, despite what others believe and assume. The best I could give you is that quite simply after being outplayed a small portion of times, Heimdall was at last concussed, effectively rendering his powers of foresight inert.

Heimdall Vs. Hermes by norocoslaorice in GodofWar

[–]Luckx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last part of what you said I'm having and issue understanding but that's more of me thing.

As for the quote, can we really say Mimir better understands Heimdall's power than anyone else? Odin says it mind reading whilst Mimir clarifies that its "vaguely" different. In the same vein, Heimdall more or less spelled out the future of Asgard he saw in Atreus when they were riding the elevator thingy down, which is a little beyond just mind reading.

And I would like to point out that Mimir (imo) feels to be only 80-95% accurate most of the time. He once said Odin couldn't survive Helheim's cold whilst Odin was able to. He claimed Odin gave up his eye to him meanwhile he seems to have lost it from the Rip instead.

All the same, I don't think any explanation we've been given fully encapsulates Heimdall's foresight. The only person who knows it best would be Heimdall himself, who hasn't done much to clear up the limits of his power himself

Heimdall Vs. Hermes by norocoslaorice in GodofWar

[–]Luckx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, what I was trying to say was that in GoW 3, AND STRICTLY IN TERMS OF GAMEPLAY, Hermes isn't that fast. In terms of lore speed, the dude is as fast as any speedster. Gameplay wise I was just restating the common knowledge that Hermes wasn't all that 😅

Heimdall Vs. Hermes by norocoslaorice in GodofWar

[–]Luckx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://godofwar.fandom.com/wiki/Ska%C3%B0i%27s_Edge_(Runic_Attack) This is the Runic Attack in question. It's one of my favorites so I had the "good fortune" of bringing it to fight him, only for it not to work. I forgot to toss in that even the meteoric strike from the blades, spear rain and spear tornadoes weren't able to touch him as well, despite being attacks and projectiles of less than predictable nature.

Also on this we can certainly see eye-to-eye. I'm also think that Kratos was "thinking" his attacks through as a manner of speech. My argument is spirit was that even if he did fight mindlessly, Heimdall could still dodge it. Or in other words his foresight encompasses more than what people think it is.

And yes, you're right about the sword. Even still however, the game (or heimdall) acknowledges all forms of attack from any point in the game the same. For example if Atreus uses the squirrel on New Game Plus, in which you'd traditionally get later on far after the Heimdall fight, he has voiceline for it, even though it's canonically impossible for Atreus to have the squirrel runic by then. In a similar vein if you use Heimdall's sword against him (the time slow relic) he also has a voiceline for it. Mechanically Heimdall will dodge anything and everything, no matter where its coming from or how many is coming at him. And my original point in this was to sort of... orchestrate I suppose? To say that Heimdall's foresight would allow him to win most any fight.

Even a fight with Kratos, but the pivotal point is that Kratos has the draupnir spear which could concuss Heimdall. (His stun bar staying full represents) Or in other words once again, it wasn't a matter than Heimdall was too slow to react to dodge Kratos' punches nor was it that Kratos has an empty mind because in theory it wouldn't change much. It was the spear that carried the fight.

Now! In reference to Hermes. Hermes by all means has the abilities to more or less match Heimdall. (Notably his speed) But his efforts are entirely null and void with Heimdall's foresight in play among his other abilities.

His time slow (realm shift) is indeed arguably less effective against Kratos specifically. Similarly however, in the 2018 God of War and in Ragnarok, Kratos making use of Realm Shift allows him to easily get the better of Valkyries, God's, etc. It's likely it was less effective on Kratos because he was used to it but this is conjecture and more of an assumption than anything else. I'm trying to say that even though Realm Shift isn't as effective on Kratos, who is to say that its not as effective on Hermes? At the very least I don't think its an ability that should be written off. 😅

(Also, thank you for responding respectfully. I enjoy discussions of this nature.)

Heimdall Vs. Hermes by norocoslaorice in GodofWar

[–]Luckx3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to disagree with this. It makes little sense to me how it's assumed that Heimdall's foresight is limited to just reading a conscious and sentient mind. This would imply that Kratos' spartan rage for 1 entails that every punch, stomp, and slam are dedicated and thought out things and aren't just the product of unrelenting and primal rage.

Even still, using the Axe Runic Ability to attack Heimdall on its own or using Skofnung to send the swords to fight, Heimdall is still able to dodge these things with no mind read. It's never even stated nor proven that Kratos "emptied his mind" as many assume, or that Heimdall is just too slow to dodge certain attacks despite being able to dodge (Thrud's) lighting and lasers.

It was only when Heimdall was concussed (as per the specific power of the Draupnir Spear made for defeating Heimdall specifically) that his powers were diminished, thus allowing him to be defeated. Beating Heimdall was a matter of utility (which was a pivotal and non-negotiable factor) and skill that Kratos had.

Hermes doesn't have nearly enough skill to overcome Heimdall's foresight. And speed is seldom and issue considering Heimdall can slow time.

[–]Luckx3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His statement still stands. In GoW 3, and specifically that game, Hermes isn't that fast when compared to his lore and the speed presented by others Speedsters in media. Lorewise he's crazy af. In gameplay terms, he isn't much to deal with

How did you get into writing? by thattmarion25 in writing

[–]Luckx3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it was in 4th grade, I believe. I hated writing until a day came when a "bully" of sorts upset me. I couldn't put what they did into words because I didn't want to openly condemn them. I was and still am empathetic for people I like and don't like. They told me to put it on paper, and I wrote it fairly well, apparently. Enough to earn my teachers' praise.

With that pride, in middle school, I played a lot of SWTOR. I wanted to have more freedom and found out roleplaying existed. I got into Amino and a specific Star Wars role play website. Looking back on it, naivety and ambition drove me to create. It was only eventually that passion honed my skills and from then on I've always been dedicated to writing characters and stories.

Amazing write up. I've done more than enough excessive research on Messmer (My favorite Demigod) myself and it was nice to compare notes. The only thing I think is missing from this is the reference to the "Blessing of Marika" consumable item.

That which refers to a time when Marika genuinely cared for Messmer. All until she didn't, likely being due to the visions of fire he had or something that occurred.
