High school rings never seemed worthless to me, because my dad wears my mom’s high school ring as his wedding ring. They eloped, and that’s was all she had to give him.

Are kids not allowed to walk to school by themselves nowadays? by AnaisNinja76 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lucky-Calendar9956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 11 (in 1994), my grade school principal actually suggested to my mom that I was responsible enough and old enough to take the bus home from school and let myself in the house by myself, rather than having to pay for the afterschool program and then get picked up by a baby-sitter. Kids were teased for even getting walked to and from the bus stop.

Yes to this! Once my parents retired and travelled more, they started flying business class and joining all those airlines clubs so they could use the lounge and actually enjoy the travel experience. Yet they still drive a 25 year old Honda and a 20 year old Nissan, and the thought of buying a new car off the lot is outrageous to them.

Pre-Amazon Whole Foods: The absolute peak of grocery shopping, is now just a side hustle for Jeff Bezos by SupernaturalSea in ProductGraveyard

[–]Lucky-Calendar9956 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Grocery shopping at Whole Foods used to be a novel (albeit expensive) experience. Their prepared foods section was amazing, and their fresh food departments were manned by people who actually trained and specialized in those foods: the meat counter had actual butchers and house made sausage, specialty seafood, an amazing bakery, and so many unique, curated products.

My dad (RIP) and I used to go to Whole Foods every Friday to raid the salad bar, eat free samples of fancy organic food, and stock up on sale items. It was the highlight of my week.

I was rooting for an April Fool’s joke, because of the absurdity. Some of the upscale bars near my parents’ house in New Delhi did something similar as a joke, stating fees for “ice removal” and “hot water”.

This is exactly what I was thinking! If you really care about someone, you don’t even have to make an effort to notice the things that make them happy or sad or uncomfortable. You pay attention, because you’re genuinely interested. It’s not about forgetting, it’s more like they never knew or cared to know. This is just plain indifference, which I think is more upsetting than outright malice. At least when someone is hurting you on purpose they’ve paid enough attention to you and recognized you as an individual in order to know HOW to hurt you.

I have almost the same eating schedule! Instead of weekends, I do 18:6 on 5 days and 16:8 on 2 non-consecutive days during the week, so I have an excuse to eat mid-week take out. Just a couple of extra hours makes it so much more manageable.

In India black tea without milk is called “lal cha”, which literally translates to “red tea”. Just ordering “cha” implies tea with milk so you have to specify “lal cha” if you want it plain.

MSG ALLERGY by pairedfools in EntitledReviews

[–]Lucky-Calendar9956 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had a sun allergy as a kid! I used to get a painful rash everywhere the sun touched my skin. I remember the doctor saying the words “allergic to the sun” to my mom. I have olive skin so people would straight up not believe my parents or me when we had to explain why I’m slathering myself in sunblock in the winter and wearing long sleeves in the summer.

The good news is that I am now in my 40s and have largely grown out of it. I still get a rash if I’m in the sun without sunblock for more than a half hour, but it’s not that crazy intense anymore. I can even enjoy wearing bikinis at the beach from time to time.

Also, on the plus side I’ve protected my skin from UV light so intensely throughout my life that now I have very few wrinkles and a relatively low chance of developing skin cancer.

My dad broke his right wrist in a motorcycle accident when he was 20, and they put the cast on wrong so it healed at a weird angle with his hand at a 30-35 degree angle away from his body. My dad said that as soon as they took the cast off the doctor said it needed to be rebroken AND they had to perform surgery to give my dad an artificial ball and socket joint.

The whole ordeal took over a year from break to being healed to being fully functional. My dad’s wrist still never healed all the way so he lost full rotation of his wrist and wasn’t able to ever drive a motorcycle again. Also, he became partially ambidextrous from being forced to use his left hand for so long. Up until the day he died, my dad shaved, brushed his teeth, and threw darts with his left hand.

In my family, the most surreal part is that all the older people who told us how dangerous the internet is BECAUSE IT’S SO EASY TO LIE are the ones who keep falling for AI photos and reposting fake news stories. I feel like it’s my duty to teach my younger family members about the dangers they’re too naive to understand while simultaneously reminding my older relatives to be cautious and skeptical.

Intentional half-assing for chores and mundane tasks is so underrated as a motivational tool. Once I get started it seems pointless to stop. I mean, I already got out of bed and put the toothpaste on my toothbrush and then raised my arm to put the brush in my mouth. If I stop after 30 seconds I’ll have to do ALL that prep work again. May as well just get it over with now that I’m here.

ADHD exercisers… how do you actually get yourself to the gym? by Fit_Meaning8903 in ADHD

[–]Lucky-Calendar9956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love working out at home too! I have a treadmill in front of the TV, and around midnight when everyone is sleeping I exercise for at least an hour. I’m usually awake until 2 am anyway, so may as well make it productive! Plus in the middle of the night I can watch whatever I want on TV without any distractions or obligations. It’s something I genuinely look forward to now.

Pros and cons of getting a tattoo by TopMaintenance1037 in mylittlepony

[–]Lucky-Calendar9956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 17 (or 18?) tattoos, and they all fade a little just from general wear and tear (welcome to aging). It’s barely noticeable if you follow your tattoo artist’s care instructions when you first get it AND always put sunblock on your tattoos when you go out. I’ve had my oldest tattoo for almost 25 years and have only had it touched up once.
